My son has decided this year he wants to be a road racer like Marc Marquez. Luckily there's a series that races in my area with a 50cc class. We had an old, ratty TT-R 50 hanging around, so I got to work on freshening it up and its now a decent little race bike with a set of scooter racing slicks on it.
As of right now, it has a pod style filter, and the spark arrestor screen cut out of the exhaust. He's losing about a second and a half per lap on the long straightaway on the track we race at. I'm not looking to build a rocketship, but I'd like to get him on even terms with the CRF 50s he's running against.
I saw an old thread on Thumpertalk where one poster suggested a Yamaha Breeze cam. Or apparently the TT-R 90 head bolts on. Has anyone tried any of this?

Unfortunately these weren’t a very popular mod pit bike and the GYTR stuff has mostly disappeared. The breeze cam was better than stock and so was the 90 head. That was until better aftermarket cams and race heads came along with the use of high compression big bores.
These bikes were heavier than the CRF so trying to trim weight was something people tried to chase.
I’d suggest gearing to try to utilize the power you have and dial in the jetting. These are two areas that will help make up some ground with a good rider.
Does the Breeze cam fit in the stock head? I've seen conflicting answers
It’s been quite some time but I’m thinking it was for the 90 head not the 50.
That's what I've read too. I ordered a Nibbi 17mm carb for it and we're going to do a little in house porting. See if that makes up the difference

My standard hop-up recipe for the little XR 50s and 70s is a Wiseco 11:1 piston and some mild head porting. This combo adds power everywhere and the head porting especially lets it breathe at high rpm.
Not seeing a drop in Wiseco for the TTR, but maybe there are other options? Could go custom if needed.
Yeah I don't want to go that crazy because if i kick off an arms race with the other parents in his class we're going to end up severely outgunned and outspent, so no custom stuff for me. He's probably only going to race it 5 more times max before moving up to the Ohvale I bought earlier this summer.
