To get to a fair election, you have to weed out the illegal voter. If voter ID and proof of citizenship makes it difficult for some.Then that’s the price that has to be paid to get a fair election. I’m good with it.
It shouldn’t necessarily be about who it helped. If non citizens are voting in US elections, it needs to stop. How we stop it is an open debate, but doing nothing isn’t the answer. Wouldn’t you agree Matthew?
I do agree but the numbers are so minimal that they make zero difference in the elections. This has been shown by Right wing groups that have audit the US elections for over 20 years. That being said the Save act would cut off more eligible voters by huge numbers and would affect the elections. So that the entire point of the Save act. It not trying to stop non citizens from voting, it trying to stop certain group of citizens. We need more citizens voting not less.

Many of these documents are relatively uncommon in the general population. For example, only five states issue Real IDs that indicate U.S. citizenship.
As a result, most Americans who would need to provide documentary proof are likely to rely on one of two common pathways: an unexpired U.S. passport or a government-issued photo ID paired with a birth certificate.
Furthermore, birth certificates often lack information that matches a person’s current identity. For instance, someone who has changed their name through marriage or court order may need to present a third document (such as a marriage certificate) to join their proof of citizenship (e.g., birth certificate) with their proof of identity (e.g., driver’s license), further decreasing the likelihood that a voter will have the appropriate documentation on hand to successfully register.
Even if voters were to provide documentary proof of citizenship, verifying the authenticity of those documents is an inherently complex task, one that election officials and motor vehicle departments often do not have the resources or training to perform.
Kansas offers a case study of how a documentary proof requirement would likely play out in practice. Before the law took effect, noncitizen registration in Kansas was exceedingly rare, accounting for about 0.002% of registered voters. After adoption, the documentary proof of citizenship requirement prevented roughly 31,000 eligible citizens, or 12% of all applicants, from registering to vote. In short, the law prevented far more citizens from registering to vote than noncitizens.
So a valid passport is one requirement or way to go about it but if you don’t. But if a married women that doesn’t have one, then they will be required to have a real id, plus a birth certificate and then since there names don’t necessarily match, they will need documentation on there name change. So on another note allot of people don’t have very easy access to there birth certificates. People might not even know what county they were bore in to get it. There are so many issues that will come up with this. So yes it’s a total problem whether you agree or not. It’s called a complete shit show and they made it that way for a reason.

Well some state issue Real ID’s with citizenship status on them. So why can some state do that but others don’t? Not questioning you just pointing this out. But that is a good question.
Every state requires photo ID to register and at minimum swearing under perjury that You are a US citizen . I was asked for my birth certificate when I re registered in a new town. And I had to get a new version of it because I was born in a small town and the original was not up to modern standards , and funny enough was not accepted as proof of citizenship. And Anybody voting in election in the town I live in has to show ID to get into the building that You vote in.
It's more of a technicality than reality, in Ma. as far as not needing to show ID to vote itself. You need ID to get into the school building they use. and they ask for Your ID so they give You the right ballot. But technically MA. doesn't require ID to cast Your vote. I don't know how other states are , from what I've read most a similar with the registration process. You may not legally need ID to vote, but it's sure easier if You have it in MA. Even the town I grew up in and the person handing out ballots knew me by name, asked for my ID to confirm everything was correct.
Another example of these technicalities is that the FIRST federal election in the US that did not allow non citizens to vote was in 1928. But it was not made a federal law until 1996. ALL of the states had passed laws restricting non citizens from voting in Federal elections so it was already not legal. They just made it also a federal crime, but it was already made illegal at the state level 68 or so years earlier.
The latest version of the Bill is drastically changed, and has $50M for helping people pay for the stuff they need to vote if they meet the requirements, You can use either a Real ID that shows citizenship or comes from one of 26 states that have worked with the government on sharing voter data since June of 2025, You can use a drivers lic and birth certificate as an alternative to a passport or real ID . And then if You have other proof of citizenship that doesn't meet the other standards if You can convince the official to sign off that You are a US citizen than thats the other way You can register and vote. It really changes nothing since You can still just swear to be a citizen and get somebody to vouch for you. A government official in charge of approving people in that position.
It looks like one of the other big reasons for the SAV act is to have a database of all voter registration that the government has access to. All in one place. As it is most states will provide this info to anybody who requests it. But its all stored at a state level. The 26 states exempt from having voters show proof of citizenship are exempt because they share or have promised to share the voter records quarterly since June of 2025.
All other states would require the proof of citizenship at the poles in one of those 3 ways I listed.
