9 Suzuki's

Edited Date/Time 1/22/2012 3:57pm
5 in the big bike class (46 total riders)

4 lites (around 60 riders)

What's going on, they're supposed to be pretty much the best bike out there?

Suzuki is too broke to be handing out any deals to riders or teams. Someone correct me if Im wrong but I dont think its any more complicated than that.

Contingency.

Guys that can ride fast on any brand are going to pick the one that pays them back the most.

Suzuki until recently had the BEST contingency/payouts plan in motocross............But people are gonna ride what they can win the most $$$ with.

Honda is the only OEM left with a decent contingency program for SX/MX.

Nobody rides a stock bike in SX, comparing their bikes to the "best (stock) bike out there" is apples and oranges. People are going to ride whatever they get the best deal on & feel most comfortable with.

suzuki for some reason no matter how many titles they win or how many good riders they got, they never seem to sell that many bikes. i dont know why... but then again recently at some of the local races i have been going to i have noticed there to be a lot more 10 and 11 rmz250s

New Zook Team (Rockstar Energy 250s. Yes, "New" in that they're actually Factory Backed, this year); so, that's where a lot of money went.

Also, there's Team Butler/BTO, Nitro-Circus/Suzuki City...and the Off-Road Team.

Suzuki's still racing and I'm not gonna be surprised if they return with a Contingency & solid Am. program. They had some house-cleaning to do and it appears to be done.

Now, where are all the Yamahas in the Lites class...?

There is nothing going on with Suzuki, actually they are in much better shape then the others. They've been pulling back for awhile now and were ready for the big crunch to hit. You will be surprised to see who's out on top in the end. Suzuki will be around.

"Where" were they, tho?

Me? I'm glad that Cunningham stayed in the saddle and finished a main in a pretty good position. As for Nicky P, what happened?

Then there's the rest of the Yamahas...?

One thing I have noticed: It's a Good Year to be a REAL privateer...on a KAWI! (Rutherford!)

great point. it gives me ammo in the win on sunday sell on monday argument. which is that the mfg's could care less about it. winning does not sell bikes. hasnt for a long time. racing does not sell bikes, it builds branding. completely different.

its a shame for the zukes tho. theyve been trying, they get it right, and they have a great product (save the false neutrals that seem to be pretty rampant). looking back, theyve pretty much dominated the other oem's in ama racing the past decade have they not?

i will speculate here, that suzuki was once on the verge of being seen as pretty close to the great honda. in the 80s, suzuki was making a push to get on that level. two things happened...

...there very elite and dominant amateur team was killed (literally, the riders died in a wreck) and they had a couple bad years of production bikes that were just shit in the reliability dept. and theyve never fully recovered in the consumers eyes. honda on the other hand, and yamaha to a slightly lesser extent, have always been branded and seen as "reliable'. in every product they make, the reputation follows. its hard to shake, and for suzuki, they are finding out its just as hard to gain.

someone from the 80s is free to correct me where im wrong on any of this. but its just speculation on my part.

Racing budgets have very little to do with selling bikes.

If it did, there would be no race teams.

Your right, the math just doesn't add up. Maybe NASCAR with the car manufacturers, but not bikes.

Suzuki, more than any other manufacturer, has cut back on production and imports since 08. The new Suzuki's were just about impossible to buy in '10. I just bought an '11 in November and there were only 3 in all of New England. I had to go to N.Y. to get it.

Funny thing, and this is from my perspective. No matter what brand is on top, be it Honda, Suzuki, Yamaha, its funny that Kawasaki was always number 2 and usually on par if not better.

not in nascar either.

not in F1...not in MotoGP....not in any form of racing. spec, production, or worx, it doesnt matter.

racing isnt about selling product or even development for that matter. there are much cheaper ways to develop products than racing. many would be very suprised to know that the r&d dept's back in japan use little if any info gathered from the race teams here.

its about brand awareness and brand loyalty. and some japanese pride, as they are racing enthusiasts as much as europeans or any other culture. but development or sales? nope.

Any one know if Pat Alexander is still with Suzuki?

He was handling my Suzuki box vans title that I bought from them and he has not returned any phone calls or emails since Christmas.

I haven't talked to Pat in years, but as far as I know he's still at Suzuki. If Pat were to leave Suzuki for any reason I am sure you would have heard about it.

How long ago did you buy the box vans?

Picked it up in Missouri from the Suzuki flat track team and paid for it on my way back from the MXoN. The funds were forwarded to Suzuki and Pat became involved when the title was not delivered in a month as was agreed in the sales receipt.

He was gone for a little while, but he's back again.

Part of the problem is dealers don't have the bikes on the showroom floors. I don't know of any dealers in the charlotte, nc area that have any rmz's or any rm's on the showroom floor. Since I sold my 08 CRF 450 I went to one of the biggest dealers in charlotte a couple of saturdays ago to look at all the bikes side by side. They had a 2011 yz450, no other yz models, a new 07 kxf250, a 2011 kxf250, 2 2011 kxf450's, a 07 crf150r, a 09 crf150r, a 2010 crf250r, a 2010 crf450r and a 2011 crf450r. That was all of the race bikes they had on the showroom floor. Not 1 single rmz to look at.

Now I am sure alot of this problem has to do with the economy and etc but you sure can't sell what you don't have. It seems to me like the suzuki dealers and yamaha dealers may be the ones hurting the most. I am a huge yamaha fan and very likely may buy a new yz450f here soon.
