Why were paddle tires banned?

After seeing this video im curious to know why they were banned? Is it because they roost to much? Or tear the track up to much? Or ?

How is it unfare if anyone could use it? Also why not have smaller paddles, like a little bit bigger then nobs on a regular tire. So it wouldnt be much of a difference.

It was both of what you mentioned.

The roost was huge and was like being shot at by a cannon full of dirt and rock
and they destroyed tracks, especially man made SX tracks. With everyone on paddle tires, you'd be down to the wood in a matter of laps, not to mention too much track would wind up in the stands and in the faces of spectators

They're dangerous for competition
If you're on some sand dune, that's one thing, in competition is another

Maxxis SM tires have a paddle pattern to them...Could you use them?

no they weren't an unfair advantage since everybody could buy one and in fact did buy them just in case for the seattle sx 2 weeks later. the danger part wasn't because of getting run over by them...that wasn't an issue since they ran minimum psi in them. as i understood it they were dangerrous due to the roost they were capable of throwing.

Plenty of racers complained stating safety issues, again the roost at times were a telephone pole high and racers ate and tasted sand for weeks after, just imagine a buried rock was found it could clean you clearoff the bike not to mention if it was shot into the stands.
