Thought I dig up an old thread instead of making a new one. The last few weeks I've been dealing with cramps in my legs at night. Not just cramp that goes away, but like a knot in a muscle the tightens so much it incapacitates you. Tried to hold my leg in this one position that is wasn't as painful but could not even get out of the bed, and then, could not walk away from the bed as I couldn't lift bend or otherwise move my leg. And it was not a short episode, this went on for like 20 min. If I moved my leg in anyway it would just knot up again. That muscle was still sore a week later. Anyway, a few things, that week I ate considerably less, trying to lose weight, and I do have a problem of not drinking enough, but what I did different prior to this problem, I started eating a creatine bar every day. I read the other day that can be a side effect of creatine if not hydrated enough. Anyone else experienced this?

Hydration sounds like the fix, here. Also, are you taking supplements…vitamins…minerals…?

Here’s my morning routine with along with a Bulletproof Coffee…I drink lots of water during the day, too…

Have you had major changes to your diet recently?

I had cut my food intake way down. But I think I've isolated it to the creatine. I stopped the creatine and the cramps stopped. I started the creatine again and by day 2 they came back. And yes I don't drink nearly enough water, going to try and drink more. But these are not like regular cramps. Regular cramps, I can straighten out my leg or what ever muscle and it subsides. These are like this knot in the muscle that you can't even straighten out your leg because of the pain to move it. Nothing like any cramping I've ever experienced before. So off the creatine for a while till I get used to drinking more and I'll try again.

I take certain medications that I've have great success with and am reluctant to make to many changes (add in supplements) that might effect how effective my meds work. I have however read that creatine is very good for your brain, mine needs all the help it can get.

Creatine made my jaw muscles feel like they were on the verge of cramping. Supposed to be some miracle supplement but definitely has its side effects.

I take everyone of them every day but the fruits and veggies ones.  Maybe they are just a placebo but if it makes me feel better then the placebo is worth it.

Creatine supplementation absolutely requires high levels of hydration to prevent cramping.  I take 5mg daily.  It's not just water you need.  Add electrolytes to your daily routine.  I use LMNT.  It's a lot of salt but does the trick.  Creatine has been shown to really help cognitive functioning especially as we get older, so I highly recommend it.

Creatine has been shown to have zero effect on liver enzymes in over 500 studies.  It is the most studied supplement in existence.  Are you thinking of kidney by chance?  If so, creatine converts to creatinine over time which raises your levels in a test.  Creatinine is what is tested for kidney issues but this increase from supplementation is a false positive.  It has no effect on kidney function, it just messes with the standard test.

OF course, if you have a pre-existing liver issue take the above with a grain of salt and speak with your doctor.

It was definitely liver. I was turned down on an additional life insurance policy because of my liver enzymes. All i was taking was Creatine, no alcohol or literally anything else that would effect my liver. After that i stopped taking Creatine and my enzyme levels returned to normal, but it certainly could have been a coincidence and maybe i just had something going on internally at the time. Either way i never took it again just case. lol
