It seems like the hip thing to do to bash Jody and MXA these days. He's older than the other current editors, seems to be grouchy, and is set in his ways.

On the other hand he lives for Moto, still races and rides weekly, and has vast experience with the machinery we ride and the people who are responsible for building it. Plus he is not afraid to speak his mind regardless of who he offends.

Lately he has really been pushing the two stroke issue. He has been in the sport longer than just about anyone, has seen where it's been, and has a good idea about where it's going. I applaud him for using his voice to make a difference. For a long time I've thought this two stroke vs. four stroke argument was futile. The four stroke was being crammed down out throats and there was nothing we could do about it. But these threads keep popping up more and more regularly, and more and more two strokes keep showing up at the tracks and trails. Surely the manufacturers must be feeling the sting of decreased sales. KTM can't keep their two stroke line in stock though. Is anyone paying attention at the wheel.

I see now that the main problem is the AMA, and their resistance to change a simple rule. Sure, all the manufacturers would have a fit at first, but ten years from now when the sport is growing again they will see this as a landmark moment in our sports history. Make the 450 class a true 450 class, two strokes and four strokes up to 450 cc's. The same with the 250's. And for gods sake bring back the 125 class. Kids moving off 85's onto 250f's makes so little sense it's unbelievable.

I'm dating myself here, but when I was coming up we used to have four classes. 100's, 125's, 250's, and open. And all the experts raced all the classes. Bikes were relativeley cheap, and you'd race half the year in 100's and 250's, and the other half on 125's and open's. And you know what? The 100's were a freaking blast to race. Sure they were slow, but man you had to wring that thing out and be real creative and smart with line choice and race craft. You should have seen JoJo Keller make a 100 go, and he was a pretty big boy even then. The racing was both affordable and exciting to watch or participate in.

I know Steve Matthes is working at Racer X again and he probably likes his job and doesn't want to piss Davey off too much. But I've even heard him complain that four strokes have ruined racing. And he's just talking about it as a pure spectator. He is so right. Go on youtube and look up any race from the 90's and tell me it's not way more exciting than todays racing where they crawl through the corner and then blast off leaping the whole straight. Watch Reed ride his YZ250 and appreciate an awesome display of talent, or RC just flogging his KX and swapping and bucking and never letting off. You can't ride a 450 like that, you'd get splattered. It makes the racing boring when there is only one guy (JS) willing to hang onto a 450 on the limit.

I guess that if we speak with our wallets we can eventually effect a change here. But it will be slow and the sport will suffer greatly in the meantime. The AMA could make the change happen a lot faster, but do they have the balls? I doubt it.
And the funny thing is that i rode it for 5 months and now i have it up on craigslist for $3000. The day i put it up i had a couple of people calling me about it. Hopefully i can get $2800 for it then go buy a used 2006 yz250 or rm250.

How can you say it doesnt help the cause? Yamaha sells out of new 2 strokes, KTM according to some on here sells out as well...

It's all about those who ride the beaters.Woohoo
I want to know why the last gen of 2 strokes are beaters? Tell my why most of the 5+ years 4 stroke are at the junkward? or have a swapped 2 stroke engine in it? LOL No matters how you put it. 2 stroke always win at the end.

Well if they are such a high demand item, would nt you think the other factories took notice and would produce some? You mean to tell me KTM and Yamaha sold out of every 2010/2011 2 stroke mx bike? If you want one they are available, drive to the shop or have it shipped to you if you want to help the cause! Like posters keepsaying , we are buying used, i know the used parts theory, thats not gonna cut it. Buying a new bike every 4 years is nt going to make the factories produce 2 strokes.
Harley Davidson screwed the pooch when they started producing more units so they were so readily available.

Live and learn.

I don't know what is their business plan with the 4 stroke.. but it is totally ridiculous..When you have others manufacturers like Husaberg that just started to produce 2 stroke.. it shows that 2 stroke is far to be dead.. Only Honda and the rest of the Japs want it that way and want you to think their way because the majority of people is suffering from the sheep mentality.. We just go with the latest and greatest!

Sounds like you need to quit your job and start buying and selling two strokes for a living. Such a high demand, you will become a millionaire in no time at all.

You mean you don't have 50 people lined up at your front door fighting over this bike and begging to give you more than your asking for it?

I doubt it.
I bought a used 2007 for $ 2700 this fall, I like it way more then the 2010 kx 250 f that I had before. Nothing like smashing berms and clutch-n....

Cheaper bike. Same results. Wiser choice. The kid is 17 at school and rides with his own money. Not like some annoying kids with their daddys 4 stroke here.

Todays kids like 4 strokes because they remind them of the hot girls they all want to get with and as we all know the dream is better than the reality.

Reality :

Really expensive to get and keep happy , super high maintenance, loud and obnoxious, liable to explode at any given time with no warning whatsoever and not that great of a ride.

I ride a 2 banger myself, cheap to keep fun to ride , just like the Missus.

I'm thinking JMar is a closet two stroke junkie! He does more to keep these threads going than the supposed "kooks".

Looking back, I've bought roughly 20 new two stroke bikes and probably 100 plus used ones. Of the used bikes, probably 20 or so were fairly current models and the rest being vintage bikes. I've spent a fortune on parts for restorations and racebikes whether OEM or aftermarket. I've spoken with my wallet plenty.

About those four strokes, well there have been three new ones. 01 YZ250F, 04 CRF250 and a KLX110 pit bike. The 2 250F's both scattered in amazing fashion, got rebuilt and get ridden occasionally. Still got them, they aren't worth selling after all the money that's been spent on them. Besides, neither of them have been upgraded enough over the years to make sense buying a newer version.

You are a master at bringing life back into older two strokes, and I have a great respect for that.

With that said, I have invested my own capital and time into pro level race teams, and from a financial standpoint, I will take the four stroke over the two stroke. Especially when it comes to the old pro level 125 racing. You wouldn't believe how many parts a tweaked out 125 goes through under the throttle hand of a pro level rider.

Nah man, I like riding a two strokes more and I work at a Kawasaki/Yamaha/Can-am/Ski Doo/Sea doo dealer. I get a free bike as a demo every year, but I would rather buy my own two stroke than ride a free four stroke because they SUCK ! I also have a 2010 Sea Doo Challenger 210 wake edition 310hp and a 2011 Ski Doo Summit Freeride 800 e-tec. I do not like Yamaha's for personal reasons so I refuse to purchase a new yz 250

I put new tires on the smoker and got Enzo to do the suspension,it a pretty fun bike, I only race for fun in Vet Master class and have plain blue riding gear.......

Where did you get your bikes tweaked? Sleeve up the cylinder and run synthetic pre-mix.. the bike will live forever for cheap.

I can imagine quite a few cranks, a lot of pistons and a whole lot of rings for starters on the 125's. But then again, with the 4 strokes you were pretty early on with the 250F's weren't you? That class seems to have gotten crazy expensive with where Pro-Circuit has brought it up to. I can only imagine the list of parts they go through keeping those tweakers running at that level week in and week out. Would be hard to line up next to those bikes!

I've always been a fan of the 125 class and am pretty amped over the possibility of a 125 resurgence of sorts. Looks like it's working pretty well across the pond. If DC makes it happen I'll step up to the plate with a bike. And I'll be bugging some people for input, hint ,hint.

Where did you get your bikes tweaked? Sleeve up the cylinder and run synthetic pre-mix.. the bike will live forever for cheap.
Tell me about this mystery synthetic. I need to find a way to keep some of these old air cooled 125's alive. If I had a buck for every piston....... LOL. They sure seem to do better with OEM cast piston's than forged aftermarket ones.

You are correct, but teams like PC were also pouring major dollars into the 125s also.

When we would tried to tweak our bikes to the max, the life span was short.

Very short.
