This post is a tribute to my late friend, Bob Smith. Bob and I were fortunate to grow up in the western San Fernando Valley, where we witnessed the birth of motocross in the early 1970s.

It was a “perfect storm,” so to speak: a strong middle class, wide-open land to ride, cheap gas, a growing sport, affordable trucks, and great places to race—Baymare, Indian Dunes, and Muntz Cycle Park.

While still in high school, Bob worked part-time as a mechanic at a bicycle shop in Canoga Park, then went full-time after graduation. He’d often say it was the best of times—because, in his words, a “kid” could actually afford a bike and a truck and go racing. That’s hard to imagine today—if not impossible.

This AI-generated image shows Bob’s setup: a Datsun and a Mid-Valley–purchased 1971 CZ 250. He lived his dream life for a few years after high school graduation. Then life became a bit more serious and off to the Army he went...

You could ride at the corner of Saticoy & Fallbrook! 🤣

@TeamGreen

We hung out at Kenny Zahrt's house on Valley Circle Blvd (between Vanowen and Victory)!

At the time that's where the valley 'ended' with no large housing developments past it. Across the street from Zahrt's house was this BIG hill. So of course Kenny set up a BMX downhill course named it the "International Track"
