After writing a few letters and about 20 posts on the Supercross Facebook page (10 in and hour!) I finally got an answer as to why they canceled SX Live. My only question now is: "millions of dollars"???? lol

"Terry and Tim -- We appreciate your passion for the Supercross LIVE! Audio webcast and the sport. Having produced this show onsite with a great team for the past 10+ years, we are sad to see it go also. In December of 2008, we decided that after spending millions of dollars through the years to provide this free audio broadcast each weekend for fans, that the consumer demand had depleted as technology has advanced. We attempted to cancel the show at that time but due to some feedback from fans and the industry, we tried the 'pay-per-listen' model. After providing the show for the 2009 and 2010 seasons, we determined that there are just not enough people that want it anymore for the time, effort, and cost that it takes to produce each show. In fact, the people that were actually willing to 'pay to listen' was much smaller than those that raised hands saying they wanted that format. We've refocused our money and efforts into more live TV broadcasts, website and social media content. Thank you for your loyalty and we hope you will tune in via all those avenues. Hopefully, that answers all of your questions."

SX Live was serious business.

does this mean millions of dollars to add to the payouts?

Can't wait for the contract to be up with the Dog & Pony Show. Feld needs to stay in the freaking carny business. Not enough support for live webcast? Like I said, Contracts coming up and I pray to GOD Feld doesn't end up with it again.

Nobody really cares about tractors racing live or not anyways! Unless Cedric is racing on a real dirt bike with half the CCs! Smile

It's all about the money! That's all they care about. I doubt any of those people at Feld grew up riding MX. It's just a job to them not a love.

I've talked to Weege quite a few times. Never had a shred of an ego for a million dollar man.

Terry you should re-title this thread, almost missed it. Not that we can change anything now.

So, I guess it's up to us to do our own broadcasts. We just need some volunteers with smart phones for each event with the justin.tv app installed. Yeah, it will be hokey but it's something.

really sad, it was awesome to listen to J & J comment the races, made me feel I was there.

I like how technology gets better and better we seem to get less and less. This really screws up plans to listen and jump in the DMXS chat room. I was even planning on winning the MXdream bike this year. Not that this is going to stop me but it sure takes some of the fun out.

Fuck SX this year then. I don't care that it's looking to be a really good year, if I can't listen to a live webcast why should I waste my time caring about it.
The TV coverage sucks, the online webcast was the only thing that really covered the races.

Just include Stewart, Reed, or Jlaw in the thread title and everyone will click on it.

bossman has chastised us on more than a few occasions about thread titles like that.

I didn't listen to the Live broadcast that often...I do remember clicking refresh like crazy for the Grandstand updates way back when.

Surely all the commercials they ran during the broadcast were not free ?

As far as low support for paying for audio , what did they expect ?

millions? unless you are the dumbest we-todd on the planet and LIKE spending money like water.... no WAY! a million, yes, i can easily see that over 10 years, very easily.

I have literally asked people that are as inside as you can get without being top brass at Feld. NOONE knows the number of listeners. The only people the know are feld employees, and they wont say a word.

here is the bullshit part about this. Guys, i have been doing webcasting for literally a decade now. Live streaming audio and video. I handle the nuts and bolts for Steve and the PulpMX show right now.

Costs:
Talent, Weege and Holley $3000 a weekend. (from a source that would know and backed up by a second that would know)
Tech Guy $1500 (this one I wont bet the farm on, noone is 100% sure but I bet I am close)

Servers (yes, if you have over 4000 you better have more than one. personally, I never stack more than 3000 per) you are going to spend $120 to $150 a month for 1 + another $50 to $100 a weekend depended on number of listeners for additional.

Bandwidth the quality of sound along with number of listeners determines how much of this you use. higher the quality (bitrate) higher the bandwidth the users listening uses. Right now, every hosting company I have ever heard of charges $0.30 a gig or a bit less, but this is on top of the bandwidth a month that comes with the box.

ok, lets run some scenarios............

you have 1 constant: getting the talent to each race and the tech to each race and they have billls also, so: T=$4500 a week. Lets be generous, T= $5000 a week (thats travel ect plus salary)

now the variables (ill go a low number then a high one)

Listeners: 5000 (it has to be more than this)
Bitrate: 135kbps (thats over FM radio quality stereo) = 17KB/sec actual bandwidth usage. 17KB/sec x 60 seconds x 60 minutes x 3 hours x Listeners = 918 Gig per cast. not even a full tb used by the listeners.

So T(5000) + B(275.40) + S (100) = $5375.40
actual cost per weekend. and thats covering the server alone for a month on that weekend, but you will need additions so average it out, im dead on.

ok, lets shoot the moon now.

Listeners: 50,000 (no WAY its this many)
Bitrate:135kbps ~ 17KB/sec actual x 60 seconds x 60 minutes x 3 hours x 50,000 = 9180 Gig per weekend x .30 a gig = $2754.00 for B (bandwidth)

So, T (5000) + B (2754) + S (13 servers $650) = $8404
actual cost per weekend. and thats covering the servers on that weekend

now here is where i call bullshit.......

5000 listeners, at $2 a pop = $10,000 a weekend!
50,000 listeners, at $2 a pop = $100,000 a weekend!

plus you telling me all those ads they run they are doing for free? fuck no! So at the LEAST they are making $4900 a weekend net!

they arent doing it because, for who knows why, they dont want to. I bet money its because whoever is providing the service for them except for weege and holley, its charging them 3 or 4 times cost.

no bullshit, I could literally be up, running, and ready for that 50,000 in LITERALLY 3 hours for the price I quoted plus $2000 a weekend. stamp it! I just put it in writing!

*edit to low number bandwidth cost, hit the divide key 1 time too many. its still cheap!

I stopped listening once they started charging. Granted it was only $30 but I guess all good things must come to an end.
