I just got a 2008 yz450f and I was a little surprised with the lack of power. It's a great bike but I think my YZ250 had this thing beat in the power department. Anybody have tips on how to boost the power a little bit without breaking bank?

I will assume you bought it used. First thing you do is a compression test to be sure it isn't on the verge of exploding, because everybody who sells a used bike ALWAYS installs a brand new top-end immediately before offing said bike. Whistling If you have good compression, go find yourself a good pipe. At the very least a better silencer to let the thing breathe. Those were tamed down to make them "easier to ride" but should still be fairly fast. If all else fails, twist the damn grip harder. You might be surprised how fast you really are going.

dubach pipe and make sure to grease your right wrist before every moto!

and dont run it in the upper rpm's like your 250... the 450 has alot of mid range

Recently picked up an 08 YZF myself. The stock muffler is said to be very restrictive but the header is very large. You can go with an aftermarket slip on and it will be better but going with a smaller diameter header really wakes it up. Full exhaust is best but let your budget dictate.

Get the ignition box( behind front # plate) from a 06 YZ 450f.. will makes lots of power. Exhaust also will help too.

The 06 does have a slightly better cams. You get more bang for your buck with the ign box from an 06

Whoa whoa here. hang on guys! A 450 with no power?? This is obviously NOT a hop up issue and he will just be throwing money out the window putting power adders on a bike that has some kind of other issue.

You need to check the entire thing over before you start bolting on parts you dont need.

A compression test or better yet a leak down test will tell the story of the top end. If its low on either test, you've got a few other things to check and a tear down is in order. Get back to us after you do this test.

My son in-law raced the National Hare and Hound's back in 06, 07, 08.. he ran YZ450's with Yamaha backing and the 06 flat out barked, the 07 was alright, 08 was a dog compared to the 06.. amazing difference.. I have all years of these and just now am getting a 09 that i have yet to ride... the 06 is a stand out..

PS.. watch out running pistons to long, the wirst pins like to break off the piston on the cam chain side.. change oil and clean filter every ride over an hour.. .. AN Ride ON!!!

I may have worded that a little too strongly. It's not that it has no power, I just expected it to have more. My YZ250 felt a lot quicker, but "felt" may be the key word there. I'm just looking for a little bit more of a punch

08-09's can gain 5-7hp in the mid range with an aftermarket exhaust system and proper jetting. As far as earlier years having more power or being faster they are not. They make almost the same power just on different areas of the power curve, hence why some people switch the cdis and cams to give the newer models some more bark on the low end. Run an 06 and an 08 side by side and you will find that when the 06 falls off on top the 08-09 catches up and both run side by side, after all other than timing and cams they are pretty much the same engine.
