Unemployment

I'm undecided. Being self employed, unemployment has never been available to me. It's a tough situation for families.

I too am undecided
I think there does need to be limitations and time limits, but at the same time I think the system should build in failsafes (for lack of a better word) in the system for when the economy is in the shitter and unemployment is high, because obtaining a job is tougher.

When things are good, have time limits
When things are bad, have the ability for the Feds to extend as the economy warrants, maybe in six month intervals.

I do also think that in the event of extensions, tighter rules should be implemented in regards to how many interviews and applications done.
Want to say on the roll, you need to work a little harder

Sounds fair to me

It should be relative to how long you had your job. 1 month unemployment for every year of employment or something like that. Never to exceed 1 year.

Because I believe that government stimulus is pure bullshit, I have to accept that something else needs to happen to help people make it through the tough times. I would be open to a government loan system of some type. Nobody can keep a family going on the piddly amount that unemployment pays but a bridge loan would give them time to adjust to a new economy. They may have to downsize their lifestyle but it would be better than going off a cliff. Similar to the auto bailouts only on a smaller scale.

food stamps and free housing have proved that with free stuff people will sit on their hands.

families should help each other out if there is a need, not the man!

Most on unemployment are milking it.

Why go to work for 400 a week spend gas, wear and tear, and listen to some fat slob of a boss bitching all day, when you get 480 on Unemployment sent right to your door?

Some have been on it over 2 years.

$480 isn't much to live on.

HAHAHHAHAHAHHAAHHAHAHAHAH!

I'm about three weeks away from graduating college and by no means am I living in need. If I had 480 a week I'd feel rich as funk! Right now my overhead is 650 per month which equals about $9 a day for food and the rest goes to rent and utilities.

480 a fuggin' week? That's absurd.

Best idea I've heard.

I'd add to it by having mandatory drug tests and temporary birth-control measures. You can't work? Well I can't afford for you to have children or do drugs.

Brace yourself.

$480 doesn't go very far in the real world.

$400-something is nothing, and it's not like people are saving that cash...it goes right back into circulation. I'd much rather help people out of work through no fault of their own looking for a job, even if a percentage abuse the system.

I'd contribute more, the way I look at it is that I might need it one day....you never know. Can't fault people out of work through no fault of their own. I'm not saying extend it further (in total duration) I say let everyone at least get the same number of weeks, stop playing games and authorizing the extensions already promised a few weeks at a time and draw the line there.

Sorry to hear. I hope things take a change for the better soon.

Well wishes.

I'm sure it doesn't when you're balancing multiple credit cards, an adjustible rate loan, rent, and car payments.....

I don't want our tax dollars subsidizing poor financial decisions. If you're unemployed what do you expect the government to be paying for? Anything more than food, a roof over your head plus a little extra to keep gas in your car is asking too much.

What about the significant other?

If we keep making it feasible for single parents (sans widows) to live on government checks there will continue to be such.

I think you're confusing welfare with unemployment.

someone once said, "the poor will always be with you."

I'm not religious, but that was true.

The richest country in the history of mankind would do better if most of the people weren't so damn greedy.

But, I'm not for giving away. A moderated (regulated) system with proper checks and balances and wouldn't be in this shithole. But, we are. "Ask not what your country can do for you, but what you can do for your country," would get someone run out on marxist rails.

I've supported mandatory service (civilian or military) for every able bodied American at age 18 or high school graduation. If we did that, I don't think half the issues we have today would exist.

I guess what I dont understand is why people cant save money for a rainy day, better yet a rainy season.

Yes we are a greedy society txmxer, but we are also a society that is obsessed with keeping up with the Jones's, to the point of obscene debt.

How can we stress saveing for unemployment if we step in and give unlimited unemployment checks?

I would think savings would be necessary even if on unemployment, $400 a week is nothing but at least it woud help soften the blow.

Did you read the article? It's not about extending the total weeks of unemployment, it's about allowing a larger window of people to take advantage of the already i-place federal extensions.

I've been unemployed for almost a year now. Let me just say that I hate being on unemployment. It took me three days of sitting in the parking lot contemplating whether to do it or not, but I didn't really have a choice considering I have a wife and two kids. I would rather have a job than my $280 a week check which is now only $65 a week. I have applied to hundreds and hundred of jobs here in Ga, but I still can't find anything. I'm a graphic designer, and there is nothing. I have even applied for other jobs outside of my field such as Home Depot, Lowes, sign shops, Cycle Gear and tons of other entry level jobs yet still...nothing.
Maybe it's just bad luck, or maybe I just really suck. It's really depressing, and i feel like i let my family down every day not being able to provide for them the way i would like too. I do think there are people out there that do take advantage of the system, but there are also people that don't. If it wasn't for my wife's job, we would probably be on the street.
Well, my unemployment check is about to run out, and i pray to God i find something soon. Below is a link to my portfolio site and resume. Then maybe you could judge and see if I should be up under unemployment or not. I have also been working since i was 14, and I have paid my taxes my entire life. So, I think I deserve the check, and i'm thankful that I live in a country that does help people in bad situations. I also think greed put our country in this position. Just my my thoughts.

You do deserve a check. You've paid into the system your entire life and now, when you need it most it's being deprived from you.

Good luck, I wish you and your family the best.,

Not trying to be a dick, but you drew a hardline before and have softened with each post. This guy is typical of most people in general. Life can be shit. It may not be luck, but it's not all just because one person tries harder than the next.

Most people find a job within a month or two once they no longer get unemployment benefits. Just sayin...
