sweet mullet!
I spent some time down there. Not sure what sort of bike you are wanting but they are plentiful in the general transportation sense. Definitely not worth trying to import something. You can probably pay X more for something sportier in a Japanese variety, but it may take forever to sell, unless you are willing to take a serious bath on the deal.
My advice, go down there and rent or buy something cheap and more street focused, that you normally wouldn't buy and enjoy the other things that the DR has to offer.
I was thinking MX bike for tack use.

DR is a great place to ride and vacation. The racing there is pretty wild as well. The fans turn out in some big numbers and there is always a few very fast locals.
”Glasses” is the man down there who can get you bike rentals. I can get you his contact info if you need it. He’s a good dude!
I don't live there but went there for 3 months last year and absolutely loved it. So much so that I am going back this year for another two months. I tried reaching out to a couple of motocross tracks just to go see some open practice and talk to some riders down there, but got very few answer. And what I understood from the answersI got with my shitty spanish is that most real tracks are like privately owned by a few riders and not really open to the public. But there are definitely tracks and good rider. I think this guy participated in some mxdn

I think your best bet and easiest way to ride would be enduro. There are trails everywhere and nobody gives a shit if you use them. You can litterally be on the road, see a trail, turn around and take it to see where it goes. I would still suggest getting a guide of some sort as it will make your life a lot easier to find the good spots. I did one with my dad. Only us two, full day, gear (a little old maybe haha) and bikes (ktm excf 2020 I think) for 200 usd. I'm sure if you find the right guy, you could give him 1500-2000$ and he would take you on a bunch of ride throughout the month that you are there. The rest of the time, we rented Chinese dual sport. Very cheap version of a crf250L let's say. It is obvisouly no-where near as good, but we had a ton of fun with them and there is not a hill or a rock garden or a river that the bike couldn't handle. Just gotta go a little slower.
Maybe some of the best times I've had with my dad!
