I find this thread particularly interesting because of the characters involved. Additionally I shattered my L1 vertebrae 41 days ago and suffered a spinal cord hit but it appears I will fully recover.

It's so easy to think that it won't happen to you when you see and read about the injuries at the track but once I came so close to the same injury it really effected me.

Anyways, in no particular order:

Darius & Lusk, you guys are so cool, I don't know what else to say. Bummed you couldn't race Darius. The race track is a dangerous place but I really don't see how you could possibly make it more dangerous for the others in any way.

Darius, you ride a blow up happy 250F. You lack the ability that others may have to get off that bike if/ when it pops over a jump. You need proper protection. You and I seem to be built in a similiar fashion (I'm 6', 164# in the hospital cause I had dropped 10#)) and I had a custom corset stiff plastic brace built for me so I could walk around and it's somewhat adjustable, and trimmable. I will be permanently done w/ it in about 1-4 more weeks. I'd be flat honored if you would let me send it to you, no cost of course. I'd like to see it contribute to your protection equipment if possible. It's restrictive but not nearly as restrictive as being a quad. Just PM me your addy and it'll go out the moment it comes off my body. It will also come w/ a cotton sock to wear underneath.

Darius another point and I need to get real here. Maybe you are just super comfortable writing here amongst your moto brethen but your lack of punctuation indicates a lack of focus on education. You are a black man that is also handicapped. People are going to judge you because of this. You need to put a lot of focus in to educating yourself to really stand above. As unfair as it is, you have to be better than average to get the same consideration as others for job promotions and advancement in life. Focus some of that riding energy into building that brain of yours. It will pay you back in spades.

Lusk, I'm confused, you refer to yourself as a quad yet you stand, walk w/ a walker, and can stick a leg out? Educate me please as I'm confused as a quad generaly refers to all four limbs being immobilized.

After my accident I still wanted to ride so badly. As soon as I got home from the hospital I hobbled up on to my bent up motorcycle dreaming of when I could carve some laps again. I even rode my friends new 350F around an oval drill just 4 weeks after shattering my L1. I have to admit that after weeks of severe pain and reading many stories of these spinal injuries I think I'm finally getting to a place where I can move on to other activities in my life. We'll see I guess cause I go back and forth.

Lastly, we all really need to support the stem cell research that will lead to a cure for this terrible injury sooner rather than later.

Take care guys.

it all depends whether you are a complete or incomplete. You are classed as a parapalegic because two limbs were affected to some degree, quads have had four limbs affected to some degree

I shattered my cervical 5, 6, and 7 (neck). It took three surgeries to correct my neck. I have a plate that was put in through the front of my neck, and then a rod and wire to make the correct curvature in my neck (your neck should essentially curve backward, Google vertebral column). I also had a bone graft from my hip to fuse C5, C6, C7, and T1. Anyway, no matter what level you injure yourself whether it be the Christopher Reeve "superman" level of C1 at the very top or all the way down to the L5, a doctor should diagnose you as "incomplete" or "complete." An incomplete injury means the spinal cord was not severed/cut. It means the spinal cord was stretched, swollen, pinched, etc., but not CUT. When I crashed at the end of '04 (September 11 to be exact), I had no movement/sensation from the neck down immediately. Through scans and every other test out there, I was considered an incomplete quadriplegic. By the end of one year I was walking short distances with a walker. From that year onward, with the help of my parents, brother, and sister, I tried some of the craziest workouts, drugs, you name it, I did it, and now I can walk with one crutch. I do not have strong motor function in my right hand (which is why I don't really ride much like Darius or Ricky James) but other than that I would shred those guys haha. I have tried electrical stimulation and exercises but my right side is just really stubborn, it definitely received the most damage.

Anyway, I planned on writing a little more smooth but I am sure you understand now.

I was at the best brain/spinal center in the country for almost a year and I saw many patients come through and get diagnosed as incomplete but then see no gain or return. It is a hurry up and wait game and when the swelling starts to go down in the cord, you will see the gain/return or lack of, the extent of the damage, and then if your situation was like mine, I started getting back some butt muscles and quadriceps so after therapy the PT gave me permission to get in the standing frame and that what I did for hours. I killed it, overcame the dizziness that comes with higher level injuries. My arms came back much quicker and my legs needed longer time to recover from exercises so I bought a racing wheelchair and started logging miles with my brother, I wasted no time.

Ok, so I just took a trip down memory lane I need to stop. But the take home message is that yes I am considered a quad because I broke my neck and I lost movement/sensation from my neck down, but I had some amazing surgeons putting me in traction, injecting steroids (at the time), performing surgery, and the Man above, and as the swelling went down I started regaining function and not too many stem cells were destroyed I guess.

Hope this helps,

Shane Lusk

This is a tough call. Both sides have very valid points At the end of the day, the race organizer has a duty to everyone on the track, not just one individual. So, IMO, he/she has the pre-eminent position on the final say as the advocate for the entire event. Personally, I would look into running separate adaptive class. But that probably rules out this year. Just my 2c.

The impression I get from this thread is Darius doesn't want to run an adaptive class even if there was one. I can't speak for him but that is just the vibe I get from his posts here.

to aussie_power_sports i have a couple of my own back braces and chest protectors believe me i have ton of things to put on to ride but i don't like riding with a back brace on because that is my decision but thank you for the offer. i also i am the track and i don't have my computer with me so i am typing all of this from a blackberry so i am not worried about punctuation right now but believe me i am smarter than i look lol i am in college right now for air traffic controlling so like i said im not worried about punctuation right now and i also will ride in the adaptive class if thats the only class i can ride in at the big races but i would much rather ride the able bodied riders because i am just as fast as them and have the same skills they do and i don't even use my legs so i don't find them o be any better than me just because i am in a wheelchair!! i also have met tons of other paraplegics and quads but i have found that most of the time with a higher level injury they tend to get the leg function back a lot faster than paraplegics

who here rides without riding boots??

When you sit down all the time, the lower back takes all the force your ankles normally would, actually more without the knee suspension. So its more important that wearing boots and should be enforced as part of any adaptive class competition. Again theres brave and theres stupid, riding without riding boots is definitely on the stupid side

Excellent thread that is not only thought-provoking and informative, but also inspiring in a couple of ways. First, the obvious grit, determination and intestinal fortitude put out there by all of the permanently injured riders who participated in this thread is just awesome. Second, this thread shows that reasonable men can respond and act reasonably, even on Vital MX, and even though opinions may differ. Wow, there is hope for mankind, after all!

My hat's off to Shane Lusk, who chimed in with his take just in time to keep it from turning into one of those, "Yer a douchebag! No, you are!" threads that we see far too often in here. Honorable mention to Zacka and Darius, as well.

I know where your coming from, I broke my back last year in may, incomplete T12-L1, surgeons fucked up the first surgery and a screw touched my cord, weakening my right leg.

Your right about quads usually gaining leg muscles back before arm muscles, but as you'd know, a few muscles coming back still doesn't make it easy to walk.

But good work on getting back on the bike, hopefully i'll be able to this time next year

I applaud the kid 100% for his grit and determination, but as an official, I would think twice about letting him race. This is from the AMA rulebook and there is no way he meets these criteria:

The rider must be large enough and mature enough

to control his/her machine at all times, and to ride it

safely. This includes stopping, starting, standing still,

mounting, dismounting and putting one or both feet

on the ground. The referee has the authority to

disqualify a rider that cannot safely control his/her

motorcycle/minicycle. If a rider’s physical stature is

such that they cannot reach the ground with both feet,

blocks may be used *at the starting line but must be

removed immediately after the start.

An attorney would kill you in a lawsuit with that passage. Is it fair, not by a mile, but it is a reality.

Thanks for that passage from the rule book. It clears up any wrongdoing that may have been done in my eyes

In district 6 they let a guy (Harold Glissen) ride all the time and he has a handicap of having only one hand.
I guess there is a difference between a hand and both legs.
I think, according to the rulebook, the promoters/referees did the right thing.

Props to all you injured riders for sharing your stories, and your thoughts on this issue. And props to (most of) you guys for keeping it civil.

Thank you guys for the kind words. It felt good to participate in a forum topic without it getting crazy, haha.

What have we learned here? That moto instills some serious ass passion in people, and that's cool to see.

X2..... very interesting read for sure. The rules are the rules as it stands know but I hope that an adaptive class can be fit in. The liability issue for the promoter has got to huge. I wonder how the X Games does it....... might learn a thing or two from them?
