Will a 2002-ish CR250 rear hub work on a ’96 CR500?
Backstory:
My dad’s buddy was dead set on buying a set of Talon hubs/wheelsets and decided to order them himself. I think he ended up ordering a set of 2002+ CR250 wheels for a 25mm axle instead of an 18mm. He bought them through a Canadian supplier, and it took almost nine months to get them.
Fast forward to the present day—the supplier has been MIA, and I’m trying to sort out the issue from 200 miles away.
If anyone knows anything about Talon hubs or knows of a spacer/adapter/bearing combo available in the U.S., I’d really appreciate the feedback.
I’ve also emailed Talon UK but haven’t heard back yet.
This looks what you're after, but it says the guy doesn't ship to the US. Though you might shoot him a message and ask as I swear he used to. https://www.ebay.com/itm/235706551764
Failing that, Talon should be able to whip up something that would fit. Should just be a spacer issue
I contacted a few wheel companies that had Talon bearings listed on their websites. From what I gathered, Talon has been very hard to get in touch with and hasn’t been shipping much to the U.S. lately.
Thanks for the link — I saw that a while back, and it gave me hope that someone in the States had made a set, but I never found anything.
Just a comment on what I had to do with a 93 CR250 with newer CR and CRF wheels. I modified swingarm for the larger axle. Also had to shorten larger axle.
2006 CR wheels I had to run different offsets on wheel spacers to get correct wheel spacing.
2018 CRF wheels I had to machine down sprocket position on hub to get correct sprocket offset.
Mentioned this because axle diameter may not be your only issue. I'm not a CR guru like others... brought this up to look into this on your bike. I'd mock wheel up with small axle to verify your sprocket offset. It's readily apparent with sprocket running true in chain guide. Luckily brake side has some float.
There is a place local to me that can cross reference just about any wheel bearing for a motorcycle. It's called Buffalo Bearings. http://www.buffalobearings.com/
There's a bunch of old school guys that work there that can get you exactly what you need as far as width, outside diameter (for the hub), inside diameter for whatever axle you have.
As far as spacers go, I needed a small spacer for a CR 480 here. What I did was use lug nut washers for a car. I had to do a tiny bit of grinding to get them to go over the axle. Not sure how wide the axle is on an older 480, but with 5 minutes of grinding everything fit great. You can get them at any auto parts store.
