Anybody ever raced High Point?

I think I am going to go up there next weekend and attempt to qualify for Loretta's 40+ once again. I will be going in cold, though, never having ridden there (I have spectated).
I missed it by one spot at Budds Creek, then finished in 9th (one spot out) first moto at Tomahawk, then crashed out second moto while leading and DNF'd.
I really want to go to Tennessee, but the clock is ticking.
What is this track like to race on?

I've raced there but not for about 4 years. What kind of info are you looking for?

I've never raced at Budds but I've been there several times. The tracks are sort of similar IMO in terms of dirt and elevation changes - lots of big hills. High Point has a faster flow to it though. There are some crazy downhills that are wide open.

Moto East,
High Point is really nice. Run by the Coombs. You will have a hard time finding a better overall race. One thing though if you got a 9th at Budds you will be in the regional. They accept up to 64 entries per class at the regional and I bet your class will not even be close to full. If you want to go to a good race head on up but if you want to save some money for the rest of the year don’t keep looking for that top 8 you’ll be in no problem.

Yea I wouldn't worry about the 9th, you'll be in definitely.

I raced High Point at the regional 2 years ago, awesome track super high speed and the ruts and breaking bumps were like nothing I have ever seen anywhere else. It is still my favorite track I have ever raced on, definitely better than budds.

9194- thanks a lot. That's perfect. I like high speed and ruts since I ride a two stroke 250 and the 450s can torque around tight corners a little quicker than me, especially flat ones.

I never sent my paperwork in to register as an alternate. I believe you have to do that within a week or something? I will do it at High Point, though, and there is one more at Actiontown, Va.
Problem is, being on the bubble at the area qualifier, I will probably get roosted at the regional at Steel City, but I gotta give it a shot.

You can register online for the regional here http://www.racerconnect.com/Scripts/SelectSeries.asp

I do not believe you need to do it within a week after the area. We always do ours all at once after we have qualified for the regionals we want to be in. You can still register for the regional from your 9th at Budd’s.

I made the cut for the regional in the 35+ and 40+ class at the Elizabeth City area qualifier.
Never been to Steel City though.... I know its near Mt Morris, but is the track similar?

They are kind of similar in that they are fast and sort of laid out across a valley. Steel City has some big jumps and a Supercross style jump section in front of the grandstands. It looks like a really fun track.

I haven't sent my registration in from Budds yet either. I don't think they really care when its in as long as it's before the regional! BTW there is a race at Steel City the 17th and 18th of May, I think I am going since I won't be able to make practice day for the regional.

Mt. Morris is probably my favorite race track! Great layout, good dirt, ruts form, it gets rough, elevation changes are good. It's a great track!! I raced there a lot in the late 80's to early 90's. I don't think it's changed much. Go race it, you'll love it! Good luck!

mt. morris is a serious motocross track while as you know budds is a dirt beltway

If you want the start at High Point, don't go for the inside. The middle works great. After the long up hill start, in the big left hand sweeper, don't dive inside, it's faster to stay out a little and stay on the pegs and on the gas. The inside makes you come off of the gas a little and stick your foot out. The right hand hair pin immediately after this is tight and slow, you want to be there before the bottle neck occurs.
I'm sure everyone has a different opinion, but I've gotten bad starts there and then passed like eight people going back down the hill into the hair pin.

At the regional there 2 years ago on the big downhill I was clicking third looking for the biggest breaking bump and jumping as far as I could. Those breaking bumps were like nothing I have ever seen before and since.

My son raced there this past Sunday for a PAMX Spring Series race. I thought the track was great. Big bumps and ruts everywhere. It was funny. At the Spring series they do not race quads. A bunch of guys were bitching that the track was to rough and they wanted it smoothed out. They were missing the quads then. I wasn’t!! My son races 65 and 85 and they need to learn to ride in that. Nobody ever said MX was easy!!

Sounds like it's gonna be rough and fast! Should be fun.
As for Budds, it seems plenty rough to me late in the day. But maybe I will reserve opinion until I race Mt. Morris and make a comparison.

I may accompany my friends there if I feel up to sleeping in the back of a pickup truck, or maybe in the passenger seat of my car.. Grinning At least for Englishtown we get a cheap, crappy little motel room.

The dirt at high point isn't as silty so it gets rougher and more rutted - or at least the ruts are more solid/packed. Of course, I've never ridden at Budds, but that's my impression from being there as a spectator.

Budds and high point are two different types of rough. Budds gets chopping bumps and highpoint gets bigger more round breaking jumps.

If it was me I'd try and get a room at Days Inn at the Star City exit in Morgantown, WV. Its about 10 or 15 min. from the track.

It should be pretty rough this weekend. I will be up there filming. As for hotels, theres a few right off the exit in Morgantown. I think the Holiday Inn in the closest.
