This is why sports betting is a threat to the integrity of our sport.

I can’t speak about integrity but I will say that one bet where it was Deegan against the entire 250 field was way too enticing to pass up 😂

mid 16th century (as an adjective): from French fanatique or Latin fanaticus ‘of a temple, inspired by a god’, from fanum ‘temple’. The adjective originally described behavior that might result from possession by a god or demon, hence the earliest sense of the noun ‘a religious maniac’ (mid 17th century).

Seems like both Fanatic and Fancy could both be origins.

I heard from different sources that "Fans" was originally the Fancy who would organize contests so they could bet on them.  The podcast The Rest Is History is a pretty mainstream source that supports this notion.

The popularity of using "Fans" to mean Fanatic is usually ascribed to the early baseball sports writers. In the Baseball history source I posted above they admit Fans from Fancy was in use before their fanatic fans.   It could have been word play since Fans can be short for either Fancy or Fanatic.  Or it could have been an accident that got popular once syndicated.

Considering sports were exploited to lead us into being better slaves, the semantic drift could have been intentional as Fancy is elitest but Fanatic can cross class boundaries to appeal to the common man (the target audience) and elicits more excitement and evokes greater purpose in the significants of the events.

I seriously doubt there’s a gambling threat in SX MX.

The word "fancy" comes from the Middle English word fantsy, a shortened form of fantasy, which originated from the Greek word phantasia, meaning "imagination" or "appearance". It entered the English language in the 15th century, and its meaning has since evolved from "imagination" and "whim" to "liking" and, in its adjective form, "ornamental" or "elegant".

The word traces its roots back to the Greek word phantasia (

φαντασαφαντασα

φαντασα

), meaning "imagination" or "appearance"

Clearly its origins come from the word "Duel Sport." Which in the English language translates to "Men who don't want to race competitive but still enjoy the fast spirit of riding motorcycles." In today's world we just say duel. EX. dueling, dullest, duelers, fanduel, dueling sword fight....

Duel Sport is the style of riding where you add as many electronics as you can, it's a duel between you and the motorcycle's charging capacity.

Just doing what I do:

According to Webster:
Fan is generally–and very likely correctly–believed to be a shortened form of fanatic. The origin of fanatic (which can be traced back to the Latin word fanum, meaning “sanctuary, temple”) is less often commented on. In English, fan made an early appearance in the late 17th century only to disappear for two centuries, resurfacing in the late 19th century. In this later period of use, it often referred to the devoted observers of, or participants in, a sport. An 1885 article from The Kansas City Times, for example, contains the line “The base ball ‘fans’ of the ploice [sic] force and fire department engage in a ball game.”

Actually, Fan is short for Fanta.

There has to be something seriously mentally wrong with these people who have to bet on sports. I get gambling on poker etc.. I don't do it, but at least it takes some skill or you are materially involved. Fkng sports betting is for lunatics and should be illegal.

Hell yeah.  If you don't like it, it should be illegal.
