Will we use our military inside the borders of Venezuela?

This could prove interesting. While we may be attacking the supply side of this, what would we think if Venezuela attacked the demand side and performed extrajudicial violence against Americans on American soil?

The CIA and DEA have been operating inside other Countries for decades.

But actual US Troops on the ground, I think it is just posturing to get Venezuela to try and shut off the flow of drugs. Moving a US carrier group into the Caribbean is just more posturing. Missile strikes on transport boats, sending a message.

Venezuela is too corrupt and poor, and the drug industry provides many illicit jobs, so they will probably just put on a big show to act like they are doing something- but in reality nothing will change. Even if they actually did crack down on the cartels, they would just move to another Country willing to take their money.

As long as Americans are wanting to buy drugs, other people will figure out a way to supply drugs.

All good points!

Just to be clear, my initial post was just to spur the conversation, not a complaint or a declaration that using force is good or bad. More just a discussion about the complications of the situation and how the philosophical questions are viewed.

Relocating a carrier battle group from the Med to the coast of Venezuela is a big move.  And an extended transit time. That’s a lot of resources with a not-yet-defined mission.  Not sure what the end-game is.

Hell. They just deployed the second battle group tthe Caribbean.  I don't know what is going on.  Regime change is most probable, I guess.

Just legalize coke, and the cartels disappear.

Fuck if I know.

Sadly, no they don't, they just start making junk coke mixed with a shit ton of chemicals and sell dirt cheap. They still sell a lot of weed in legal states that way.

why would the American government want to get rid of drugs? They're the biggest drug dealers in the world. They may want to get rid of some competition... But get rid of drugs in this county, no way!

What about all those lawyers and attorneys and judges and the entire judicial system? They've got deep pockets and a strong lobby. What about the industrial prison complex? Housing inmates is big money and they also have a strong lobby. Who would they fill the prisons with?

Of course systemic drug use also ties into the welfare state and health insurance and the disenfranchisement of entire demographics. These things are essential to maintaining the status quo and the economy and make enormous amounts of money.

This might be something but its most certainly not a serious attempt to stem the flow of drugs into our country

Exactly! Maduro is as ill legitimate and corrupt as they come. Getting him outta there would a very least help slow the drug flow. For a while anyway.

getting maduro out of there would at least help the American government consolidate its control over the drug trade.

The American government isn't in the business of going around the world removing dictators from power for free, and in order to give freedom to people. If history proves anything, it is done only to install a pro-American dictator that can more easily help American business interests exploit the natural resources of said country.

They might not be in the business of removing dictators, but they certainly have done it before, or have been responsible for it being done. Kadafi and  Saddam come to mind.

How would you feel if a foreign power decided your administration was "ill legitimate and corrupt as they come"?

Would they have the right to implement regime change?

Well I’d probably feel like a Venezuelan citizen. They’ve been trying to get him outta there every since he lost the election and wouldn’t step down.

That Venezuelan dude just threatened us…

With Columbia.

Look it up. It’s hilarious.

I’m guessing Chevron will be exporting huge volumes form Venezuela in the rear future.

I just hope Columbia doesn’t come down on us too hard!🤣

You mean regime change and steal their oil?

They do have a lot of oil, but it's thick, and of poor quality that makes it hard to get and refine.

So does Canada and the Middle East.
Alaska and the Gulf as well.
The US has been stealing Syrian heavy crude for years.

Not saying it would make any decision reasons, just pointing out that it isn't very good.

Chance rightfully corrected your goofy assumption that Maduro's security team supports him just because they're protecting him and you come back with this stupid shit? That's a dopey take even by your standard.
