I new to 4 strokes im getting rmz 250 brand new, but do you need to break the engine/piston in like you do when you get a brand new 2 stroke or put in a new piston in a 2 stroke? also when you get a brand new 4 stroke how longs does it like smoke for caz i know they smoke a little when they are new

Is this a joke? Run it wide open out of the box. Seriously, drain all the oil and then run it wide open. Four strokes are tough as hell and actually if you drain the oil it won't smoke nearly as much. Your welcome.

Dude, just read the manual when you get the bike, it will tell you all you need to know.

No to break in Suzukis everyone knows that you drain all the oil out and run it. Once it's broken in put oil in.

I don't know that it is absolutely necessary, but I will always heat cycle new pistons and/or new bikes (2 strokes and 4 strokes). Maybe I'm just old school - JMHO. Start the bike, run it easy to heat the engine up. Run it for 15 minutes then let the engine cool all the way down. Then start it again, run it a little harder putting a little more load on the bike - 15 minutes. Let it cool all the way down. Do this 2 more times with putting a little more load on it each time. Get a full hour on the bike, then change the oil + oil filter (and oil screen on some bikes), go ride. I've never had a problem when doing this on any of my bikes. I also recently picked up a KTM 350SXF, the mech at the KTM dealership said to heat cycle it exaclty as noted above. Runs like a champ. Not sure if it is necessary, but it won't hurt. Engines cost a lot of money, oil is relatively cheap and it's only a few hours of my time. Why wouldn't you take that precaution?

As much time as you spend advocating 2 strokes I at least could assume you would be the only guy on here with 2 stroke lawn mowers weed backers etc.......guess your dedication doesn't run that deep :p

Actually, the only lawnmower I still own is a 1990 Lawn Boy 2 stroke walk behind. Really trick, magnesium mower deck and adjustable aluminum handle.Three speed tranny , walk jog and run like hell. Has oil injection so it runs on the mystery gas! Got Shindaiwa(sp?) and Echo weed wackers, edgers, blowers and hedge trimmers. Big ass Husqvarna chain saw too.

Surely, you should have known.....Smile

This place is going down hill faster than james stewarts career...just when you think it can't possibly get any worse....The guy asked a simple break-in question because he wanted to take care of his new bike and you tell him to drain the oil out and when its
broken in..put the oil back in....I wish I had the job of driving the karma train...just sayin.

So what is the problem?

Drain that shit out, your rings will seat way faster dry. Otherwise you run the risk of it becoming an oil burner, and you don't want that.
Plus oil has a lot of horsepower robbing resistance. Ever try ninja-ing someone underwater? That's what your engine is trying to do when you fill it with oil, only it's even worse cuz oil is way thicker than water.

So when he blows up his bike for running it without oil, you guys are all pitching in and taking care of the repairs, right?

That is the right way to do it.

I do two easy laps to bring the engine oil up to temp, then let it rip. The old heat cycle method will cause the walls of the cylinder to glaze which promotes poor ring seal and blow-by.

Did I tell him to drain the oil out? And last time I looked, my checking account looked like it belonged to some high school kid.

Besides, I gave him good advise about steering head bearings. Even typed it out in boi speak so he could read it.
