Simons Anti Cavitation Inserts - Oil Level?

I just purchased some 43mm 1979 YZ forks with Simons inserts. Much of the fork oil bled out of the forks during shipping. Does anyone have any data on the amount of oil and weight I should use for a given weight and skill level ( or lack of skill as the case may be )? Any information would be appreciated.

Do a google search for Thor Lawson. He has done a really good job providing repair parts for Fox and Simon's suspension components as well as parts and service manuals. He may have the info. you need.

However, don't think there were any 43mm Yamaha forks until 1980 or 81.

Thanks Newmann, I bought these forks with the triple clamps and was told they would fit my 79. Sounds like I may have a bigger issue than the fork oil level!

No issues, the 43mm front end will probably bolt right up to the earlier YZ and give you the best suspension available for that class (Evolution 2 / Grand Prix?). Post up a pic of where the lug on the fork leg engages into the brake drum backing plate and we'll be able to tell you what year model forks you have. Did you get a wheel with them?

I use to have a Simons anti-cav kit in a '85 KX. I remember that they worked great compared to anything else I rode with back then.

Look like stock Yamaha forks painted yellow,maybe have Simons fork kit ? The only way to tell is look at the fork internals. Were very popular on 1984 Yamaha's even the Factory Team used them. You'll need clamps,wheel,and axle to mount on your 1979. It's alott of work,but if your real fast worth it. I would just put in Race-Tech Emulators with correct springs in your 1979 forks and have better forks then any thing Simons or Fox ever made!

I sent my stock 38's to have the Simons kit upgrade put in them.
This is what I got back. I've got some 43mm triple clamps but only have the stock wheels and axle. I'm not considered fast on any scale so I guess I'll hunt down some stock 38's go with the Race Tech upgrade. Thanks for the information folks.

You sent out 38mm forks and got back 43mm? Wha???

Who did the switcheroo on you?

The 43mm forks are better if you gather the parts to fit them on your bike...less flex and great action once you put in the Race Tech emulators...

43mm stanchion tubes will NOT fit in a 1979 triple clamp.
