Greetings to all, I thought I'd share my 440 GP build. Long time coming as I owned the bike nearly 20 years before I could build it... many changes were made keeping the GP heart of it. It was a former desert race bike from what I was told (as it had big fuel tank, and wide (moose antler width) handlebars... etc. Here's what I started with. Bike is done now and I'll post more if anyone has interest.
I will be following this build as I just started a Maico 440 build of my own! Just split the cases the other day and need to get them cleaned up. I have a couple Wheelsmith frames that I will choose from for the build. This appears to be a GP frame from what I have been told. Please post pics as you get them!
Mine had some Wheelsmith mods (forks, footpegs & not sure what else) It already had a Mikuni, J&R silencer & vintage Works Performance shocks on it already. We reused the shocks but, shortened them to meet AHRMA requirements.

Why the 'hammarite' type paint on the Swingarm?
Do you have to , sort of, 'disguise' it to fit in the period rules, as I see you've had to reduce the travel for a dated class?
Not criticism, just a question.
It is a bit of a crack up to see the Wheelsmith (?) extended lowers, to give more travel; to that era's forks, be pushed way back down in travel! Many here would have no idea of what they were about.

Downpipes : I'm an expert at flattening them. I had a mate Insist that I rode his freshly built Bultaco in a race meet, a few years ago, and I warned him about my pipe killing capabilities. But, as I said, he Insisted. It was thoroughly pancaked after my efforts - he was warned though..........
Hi, yes it's Hammertone on the frame and swingarm. I simply like that color & wanted to make my bike unique. As for the swingarm, it's a one off modded from a KTM Pro-Lever single shock (same bike the DLS front & rear wheels came from). I understand what you mean about the Wheelsmith forks (which have been converted to internal spring and shortened to meet AHRMA requirements for true "vintage" classes. Bike has several other mods as well. It's a fresh build still needing dialed in.
I remember many a pancake pipe from that era LOL
