YZ250 2000 Lectron carb…should I ditch it?

I’m building a fun 2000 YZ250 build thread here and it came with a Lectron carb. I’ve always been a fan of the stock carb, but does anyone here have any experience with Lectron on a YZ? It’ll be about two weeks before I get to test ride this thing, and wondering whether I order a new stocker.

That's going to be a fun bike.

Some guys love the Lectron.
Most of the bikes I've seen with Lectron carbs run on the lean side and they lack the mid range torque of a well jetted Keihin.

On the other hand, I know the off-road guys love the Lectron.
Also, I have seen a few guys running the Lectron on Austrian 125s with decent results for motocross.

If I were in your shoes, I'd do the best you can to make the Lectron run well and look for a off-road guy with a YZ250X or YZ250 who wants to swap you carburetors.

There was a thread here last week with some good YZ250 jetting specs in it for the stock carb.

Plenty of info out there for the PWK38, I just got a 300XC that I'm swapping to a Keihin. Plenty of popular needle choices to choose from and get some baseline settings. If tinkering with needles is not your thing you might try a JD jet kit. I've never messed with a lectron so I don't know how they really ride.

Cheers man. Yeah I think I’ll run the Lectron for a wee bit (I ride off road) and see how it goes before spending a few hundred AU$ on a new stock carb.

Agreed. I've never ridden with one, but the new pro version with the accelerator rod seems to be loved by anyone that has used one. Older models are hit and miss.

If you ride offroad you'll love it, I had the pro on my 02 cr250r and I ride motocross, really good carb for an average rider, but if you're on the faster side you'll feel that there is no possible way of jetting the bike perfectly. The issue that I had with the one that I had(pro version no xcelerator rod) it ran lean just a little down low, increased the torque jet 1/-1/4 turn and it cured the issue but then poof It killed the top end. For torque down low its awesome.

I have a buddy that would agree with you. He switched from a STIC PWK carb that overwhelmed him in its power gains. He said the key for the Pro was the Xcelerator needle.

The STIC goes for the same price as the Pro basically, but it can be tuned for gnar tech trail to Pro MX level. Mike Alessi used one on his YZ300 in smoker world championship at GH. It was on Jared Lesher's YZ250 in SX qualifying were James Stewart announced his shock that Jared was passing 450's.

The lectron  pro is definitely better than pwk or yz250  stock carb, the lectron pro far exceeds it no doubt to me!! I believe the people that don't like the pro more than likely

Put a lectron pro on a bike that wasn't in good

Running condition before they put the lectron pro on !!
