Tyler Stewart was one of the top 85 riders coming through the amateur ranks. He moved up to the big bikes this year and was going really well on them in the B class. At the Lake Whitney Spring National in March Tyler crashed in the 250 B class and was careflighted out. He was in bad shape and they weren't even sure if he was going to make it. After spending a week in ICU Tyler was released from the hospital with a punctured lung but the worst of it all was that he was now blind in his left eye. After taking some time off and adjusting to his new vision, Tyler decided he has some unfinished business to take care of and is back to riding and hopefully racing soon. Check out the video to below:

Way to get back on the horse Tyler...
125 anyone?
Nothing against Tyler, hes just part of the system, but going straight from an 85 to a 250 no matter how talented you are is just not right IMHO.

He actually rode the 125 all year last year and raced it at Ponca and did very well. He was running top 10 when he crashed, and it was actually on the same jump that Jesse Masterpool has his crash on the day after. Poor track maintenance and running motos late in the day is what caused his crash.

His a video I did last year when Tyler first got on the 125:

How come there seems to be more serious crashes at Lake Whitney than there are at Loretta's? I could be very wrong about that, but it seems i have heard about more serious crashes there on the amateur circuit than at LL...anyone care to shed some light on that?

Oh and props to Tyler, seems like a strong kid!

The track gets really rough and I know in the years past they didn't do much maintenance to it and a lot of the jumps had real bad kickers in them. The jump Tyler and Masterpool crashed on has a real bad kicker in it on one side of it which caused them to crash. Also in Tylers moto the sun was facing you coming into the jump so you really couldn't see the face of it, which only leads to problems.

Pretty sure the track is closed now and there wont be any more races there.

Interesting, yet sad stuff....thanks for clearing that up..

The track has actually been closed? I think this sport needs some serious changes when it comes to track design, but not sure if closing a track is the answer, the owners should just make changes to make things safer....

In many parts of the world, a lot of tracks usually don't have jumps that would destroy you if you didn't clear them, i also think that is one of the solutions to safer tracks, especially at a local level, there is a way to make things fun, and safe at the same time, it just takes some creativity...

Well the track is located on a hunting ranch (WB Ranch) and I've heard everything from the new track owners weren't paying the lease to the ranch owners just over the track being there. I don't know the real reasoning behind it but the Spring Classic National has now moved to a different location and from what I understand, the track is closed.

Why cant all jumps be like table tops? I cant understand why we have to have the huge gaps, hitting the backside of the landing is brutal yet nobody changes it. I know the cool effect as you get more height when looking at it but wtf? Enlighten me please.

I'm with ya on this. Its the same jump just safer and it also lets kids work up to the bigger jumps with less chance of them getting hurt real bad.

Its real nice to Tyler back. I wish him well.

Sadly, most track owners probably can't afford to fill all the jumps in with dirt. That would increase the amount of dirt needed exponentially. Maybe that's not a problem with these big name tracks, but a lot of local tracks are on a pretty limited budget.

The jump that Tyler crashed on was a tabletop. The more important thing is to maintain the tracks during these big races. When you have 1000's of entries the tracks get nasty and they need to be worked occasionally through the day, or else this stuff is going to keep on happening.

Would he be allowed to race again being blind in one eye?

He wants to try to, but that's just one thing they're trying to figure out

Or are you asking if tracks would say something about it?

cool vid, he looks especially good in the whoops! since they are raising the age limit to 18 it would be cool to see a pro-am 125 SX series with stock suspension etc.

I don't think his eye should be an issue, he will adapt, we have a local vet pro 54 yrs old.
with only vision in one eye who still wins against 30plus riders. He won a vet pro championship a few years back at Glen Helen.

Let me see if I have this right. He had brain swelling, and was left blind and one eye from an accident earlier this year and is making a comeback?

My favorite question was "Would he be allowed to race again being blind in one eye?"

Not that it would be mom and dad who would break the news to the kid that it may be a bad idea, it will have to come from a sanctioning body. Right

Hate to be the flatliner, and I'm glad to see this kid beginning to recover but the welfare of this upcoming MX generation is concerning.

Ya It's taken him awhile to get use to it but he's adapted pretty well to it so far.

My buddy is blind in one eye, he used to have use of both. But I can tell you he is a ripping snowboarder,(backflips and big drops, now a heli-board guide in Alaska) and seeing in the white stuff is not easy, but it is usually more forgiving upon crashing. So it will be possible when he gets used to the depth perception thing. Wishing Tyler a successful future.

I see no reason a person should not be allowed to ride if they are blind in one eye when we have a wma rider who is deaf.

Thats true, I don't think anyone would try to stop him besides his parents if they didn't want him to
