I just find it funny that people will repeat what their dealers tell them (whos interests revolve around sales) vs. actual studies.
EPS doesn’t degrade over a 5 year span. But if it has been crashed in, you need to inspect the EPS liner to see if it has been compressed anywhere. The inner pads should be replaced over time because (like a couch cushion) they will change in size and the helmet may not fit properly anymore.
In a perfect world the eps can last a longtime.
But I've seen how some peoples sweat seems to be harsher than others. Along with using different stuff in their hair, to clean the helmet, not cleaning the helmet, and storage all can impact the EPS. When I was painting helmets ,I got some used helmets to paint as display helmets and I was surprised at how brittle some of the EPS was in some helmets, and how another helmet close in age ,same model , just a different previous owner looked and felt almost new.
I think that the reasons they give an expiration date are because of the variables and how many helmets will be less safe after that amount of time. It also likely has something to do with insurance ( liability coverage for the manufacturer or brand of the helmet). Yes EPS can last longer, it can also fall apart sooner in some cases.
I know a quality helmet is expensive. But head injuries are much more expensive and its relatively cheap to stay as safe as possible by replacing a helmet relatively often . I've always crashed in mine long before 5 years passed. A lot of small crashes can slowly compact the EPS and make it less safe too. I've had 2 of the same brand/model helmet for a longtime now and You can feel them start to be looser as time goes on. That loose helmet has compressed EPS.
