So, I decided to investigate what it takes to tether the iphone to a laptop. I have the 3GS with the unlimited data plan running iOS 4.0.1.
1) Tethering is available for jailbroken phones--mine was, but it became unstable so I foolishly upgraded to OS 4.
2) Tethering may be available for phones with OS 3.xx (3G and 3Gs phones)--try http://help.benm.at There are tons of videos on Youtube for tethering 3.xx OS phones and that apparently works, but ONLY via USB and bluetooth, NOT with other WiFi devices, which is what I was hoping to do.
3) You CAN tether a 3G iPhone if you do the following (applies to ATT)
drop your $30 / month unlimited data plan (that you HAD to buy)
Add the $25 / month 2GB Data Pro Plan, PLUS a $20 / month tethering charge
Note, if you go over 2GB / month, that's another $10 / GB
So...your unlimited plan, which was never unlimited because ATT chokes the bandwidth like stripper on a dollar bill, is essentially useless. Pay $45 / month to get what you've been paying for all along and then add another $10 if you actually use it.
What an FU ATT / Apple have provided people.
What's really sad, is reading all the defenses of Apple by all the fanboys out there. Holy FFFF!!! these people would eat Steve Jobs poop. I find people bitching about problems with upgrading the 3G to iOS4 and the fanboys have 3 responses:
1 Tell the person with the problem they are dumb for ever upgrading to an OS that Apple says works great with the phone.
2 Tell the person they need to buy a new iPhone 4 because they are using old technology.
3 Run down a LENGTHY list of reboots, restores, blank restores, etc--which I find hilarious because everyone is always bragging about how Apple products "just work." What a joke.
/end rant/

The iPhone can be tethered on other networks just fine.
Dropping calls isn't good for our business.
Now, I'm lookin' at the I4...might get it. We'll see.

I think it's shitty how they keep digging into your pocket...and yes, I understand it's mostly an AT&T issue and all the companies do the same.
