My wife and I currently live in northern Indiana closer to Chicago, but are sick of the winters. We eventually want kids too. We’re currently looking at the greater Tampa/orlando area. I heard this is a nice moto area too? What are the pros and cons of living in that area of Florida? I’m looking for a job currently in the area but no success yet.
Orlando is land locked and miserable during the six month long summers. I’d look at some of the coastal areas on both sides. I’m a fan of the gulf coast.
Just keep in mind that the south is extremely different than the north, its not your existing life transplanted to a place without winter.
Gulf side is pretty sweet, I love going there.
The oldies I know that live there love it. The young adults, not so much.

94- 97 we horizontal drilled from the pan handle to Miami . 96,7 I took the flight pay money & stayed . A lot of fun back then now it’s way ovr crowded.i75,95 has hvy traffic 24 hrs a day now. Fastest driving state.even crossing the st e to w it’s bumper to bumper . Crazy wild life to see & hear we took a John boat threw the woods that’s under water & swamps to survey. There’s a fog season . It’s flat . Expensive, wages are very low. Tracks are expensive & cookie cutter not much you can do without a hill. Wi. Sand tracks are much better & cheaper . Either mega rich or poor . Feels Much colder than it is in winter In pan handle in 94 some nights it was colder than Wi. In winter. Cold water is only cold in winter . The grass sucks it’s real course you don’t want to be barefoot. Too many snakes. Cockroaches common . Top 3 in illegals. There is a lot of negative about the state now . I used to hate leaving I liked it so much . I just leave the state now like any other. I,ve been in every st & small to large cities . Miami ts makes the biggest shit hole in Jersey look good.i,ve been shot at thousands of times . Miami crap hole will put you on edge & ready to knife or pull the trigger every second. Jacksonville another avoid .Yborr city a party st in Tampa area was packed with women in 97 . I hooked up with a couple Mbl players old ladies . Northern Indiana- Chicago area doesn’t get much snow neither does Green Bay . I haven’t been able to x cross country ski in 10 yrs on time off . Only need 3-4 inches. It’s real damp windy & cold in winter . It doesn’t warm up here until mid June tho . This winter is supposed to be brutal. Last winter was the worst ever for me since 88 traveling I honestly did not think I would survive it . You can see more beautiful women in thongs at Lake Supior beaches than Florida now. When leave the Xmas track go clean up . A Big rush of being free & a part of the Amazing beauty. You need a couple weeks up there is a ton of cool shit . Like swimming in caves off the Big lake . Copper mtn ovr looking the big Lake Superior etc
Why is that ?
Fair point. I would expect a bit of a culture shock. Not sure if it would be good or bad though.
Probably because it’s too expensive. It changed into mega rich 21 yr olds driving 1 mil cars . The working class is poor in 97 main line pipeline rate for laborers was 7.85. In 94 Phily, Jersey mechanic rate 78.00 laborer aprox 58. My co cut us 2 checks there rate + mine. Waffle houses everywhere but there all ovr the se. Wages even union are extremely low yet. Most Midwest people move to the Carolina’s that’s ovr crowed too. The winter of 12,13 when it never hit 1 degree for ovr 60 days alot of people left the Midwest or Wi. It’s cold in the se in winter too . Florida,s 38 feels like 12. I know a flat bed driver from your area . Born in Chicago grew up college he got tired of the white collar world . He Loves his job working for Roehl & western Wi. He want to move there . Does alot of lumber loads throwing tarps. He talked about the cool vibe & beautiful women in w Wi. I said you think so ? But then I remembered women telling me they get up at 4.30 am walk a trail threw the woods with there dog & go for a canoe ride at sunrise. Much colder & more snow ovr there tho . Wi. Rapids 10 to ride need, Thurs , 20 Fri- sun way better than a Croom . 700 acres of trails for bike, quad, side by side , Mx track a easy sx & a kid track . Cool vibe big vacation area with a bunch of lakes . IL. Indiana people ride there . Fl. Trucking always only had 2 loads per 10 trucks hv to sit 24hrs + then always drive to Ga. For a load.
Grew up in St. Pete (25 min from Tampa), lived in Tallahassee for 4 years attending FSU, and now back in the Tampa Bay area a few years into post-grad.
Between the Tampa area and Orlando, Tampa is 100% the better choice. Sure, Orlando has the theme parks, but unless you're a theme park fanatic, you're not going to appreciate those for very long. It's a sprawled-out city full of freeways and bland subdivisions, IMO (keep in mind I'm biased). Summers are also a bit worse in central FL due to not having any sort of seabreeze. You're also 1 - 1 1/2 hrs away from a beach, which is inconvenient if you would like to enjoy that aspect of FL. The Tampa area simply has more to offer for the average people living there than Orlando does.
I keep saying "the Tampa area" instead of just "Tampa" because I actually don't like the city of Tampa itself very much. Pinellas County (across the bay) to me has a much more comfortable, local feel. Over the past several years, Tampa has began to turn into a mini Miami. Lots of snobby rich people from up north who think they're more important than they really are (I'm not talking about natives who have been in Tampa for decades). Pinellas County (St. Pete, Clearwater, Safety Harbor, Seminole), to me, is a lot more down-to-earth, albeit pretty expensive due to a lack of space to build.
If you want a larger property or want to be as close as possible to tracks, then Pinellas probably wouldn't be the best option - you'd probably prefer north Hillsborough or Pasco County. Most of the tracks within reasonable distance are further inland. Dade City, Croom, and Spyder are all pretty close (especially Dade City), and you could make it out to Orlando MX or Pax if you're willing to take more of a hike. There's also MotoBros and 74MX to the south.
The sw coast of Florida is a treasure. The beach areas of Naples, Fort Myers, Sarasota are so beautiful, clean and safe that virtually no one even locks their doors. My best friend goes on vacation for weeks at a time and never even shuts his garage. I didn't even have a key for my house for like a decade but the area is always ranked at top spot to live so its growing exponentially unfortunately. Obviously there is small neighborhoods you may choose to lock your doors but no need to even pass near them. Sanibel and Captiva have had 1 major crime in 50 years and it was domestic but really expensive like Disney $5 water pricey and $6 to cross bridge. 74mx and both Motobros tracks and a lot of private tracks around. Orlando is busy and outside of the parks is like any big city and not real nice. Tampa is really nice but pretty busy and has those big city traits. St. Pete is really nice. Punta Gorda not real nice and kind of boring but that's where Motobros is. I have a beautiful house for sale in Fort Myers in the top neighborhood for families at almost half its value only because i never leave the farm i bought and just can't afford to keep all of them and its draining me financially. Can ride a bike to beach and close to everything and the area and neighborhood is absolutely gorgeous on an acre. I just love the farm life now after growing up on the beach my whole life and nice to not seen another human in days. Love that.
