CR500Rider put up a thread today showing him on his Honda 144 cutting hot laps at Rio Bravo in Houston...a track I practically grew up on, and it gave me a severe case of the homesick blues. Are there any older native Texas MX riders here that are ancient enough to remember a track called Cloverfield, in Houston (actually, in Friendswood if I'm right)? It's another track where I cut my teeth.

Here's some old footage from '71-'72. The filmer was probably Robert Tuggle who rode for the H&H Racing team back then, probably on a 125 Penton...

Pretty cool, but mostly not Cloverfield as I remember it--was there ever snow fencing out there? To me much of it looked like the Motorcycle World operation that I think opened around the end of 1972, beginning of 1973, and was a few miles away from Cloverfield. Last half-minute or so seemed like it could be at Conroe, with the backstretch next to I-45. There may be some early Rio and Cloverfield bits in there as well, thought there may be as many as five different tracks in the footage.

Looking at it closely again...I think you might be right about the last bit being Conroe. Can't remember if Cloverfield ever had snow fence or not...

Motorcycle World was just northwest of the intersection of FM 518 and what is now W Bay Area Blvd, and today Countryside Drive runs right through it. Go to www.historicaerials.com and enter the FM 518/W Bay Area Blvd intersection in the search field, then switch the year to 1973 and pull back a bit to higher altitude, and you should see the flat track oval standing out like a sore thumb. It's on the north side of FM 518 southeast of Pearland most of the way to I-45, just west of what is now W Bay Area Blvd, but the latter did not exist back then. Sorry this is so analog, don't know what the precise street address is, but that intersection puts you right on it. The ravine the track crossed is still wooded in the subdivision today.

You can find a number of tracks in the Houston area in 1973 on that website; try a Clover Field, Texas, search, or just work over from the Motorcycle World location, and you can see it very well overall in that year's aerial photo. Not high resolution though.

My entire family raced at Cloverfield back in the late 60's & early 70's, Rod Boykin (my father) & two friends Phil Steffler & Jim Trimm started a racing team, S.T.B. Racing. My dad is 79 and still owns his 1973 Husky 360, I'm 55 and ride a 2000 Honda CR250R, my brother has given up riding, but I know he would probably jump at the chance to cow trail every now and then. After reading your thread I found some old 8mm film we shot back in the day, it is faded out really bad but I'm in the process of having it digitally restored, once it's done I will try to upload some footage. I remember my Dad & older Brother racing against the H&H Racing team back then, (I was only 10-12 years old and was in the pee-wee class). I seem to recall the name Robert Tuggle and also Steve Hackney and maybe Bob Hannah from H&H Racing. There was a guy named Robbie Hobart that raced Rio Bravo a lot and was SUPER FAST do you remember him?

Had the Old School Reunion and the AHRMA National at Rio this weekend. Track is just amazing and real MX. So much fun thrashing the 79 CR125, groveling my way through
the bike show , eating some good BBQ, seeing Penton enthusiast Lyle Lovett hanging out and taking it all in.....not much else really compares. Good people, good times!

Stop drop and drool! C&J Racing framed XR500 built to an amazing level of detail. Factory bikes just don't compare. Best part....this vintage nut is going to race it!

"Crazy" Robbie Hobart raced a lot at Bravo & a lot at that night track that was right off of the 610 loop fairly close to What was called Astroworld back then. I think it was promoted by Texas Motocross magazine for awhile. I remember Robbie riding a Suzuki TM400 for a while, and would do freaking vertical one-handed wheelies down the back straight there...the TM's throttle pinned. He was talented & quite a showman. He pretty much smoked all comers at that track!

Tuggle, Hackney & a guy named "Diamond" Don Rainey raced for the H&H Music Co. team when they were the dominant force in Houston MX. They were all sponsored by a shop called Cycle Shack over on Bellaire Blvd. in Houston. You were cool if you were sponsored by Cycle Shack back then, because they were the hot Euro-bike dealer in town. Those guys were 100% moto.

I remember the night track, we lived on the north side of the 610 loop and would go over on Wednesday night and practice. horrible lighting but great for "back in the day" lots of shadows and hidden dangers! H&H was def the dominating force for sure, those guys were fast and smooth. Crazy Robbie was a blast to watch, if he didn't crash, he won, and sometimes both! Let you know when I get some footage.

Very cool. I'd love to see some old footage. Btw...don't know what Tuggle, Hackney or any of those guys wound up doing, but I know Don Rainey promotes Vintage MX races & bike shows now. I'm sure Newmann has the scoop on that.

And, I noticed Newmann mentioned eating some "good barbecue" at the Rio Bravo Vintage event in his post above. Damn!! Somebody needs to ship me some good Texas brisket & Czech sausage up here in Missouri! They don't know nothin' about BBQ up here!

I don't remember traveling to Dickenson but we did hit Conroe, Bravo, Cloverfield, & the night track off of 610 loop seems like I recall a track in the town of Rockhill maybe? We moved to Alabama when I was 15 and because of all the natural elevation in the state, we were really excited to find some tracks, they turned out to be shitty compared to what we grew up on, the first track we found was built on the flattest land you could possibly find in the state, and nothing but red clay. Made me immediately homesick for good ole Texas dirt!!

No kidding 'bout Texas brisket, none better that I've found. My brother moved back to Texas not too long ago and said he was able to catch a race out at Bravo, said it was good to see the track still in operation, may try to go out soon to visit and try to work in a race while there. Back to Cloverfield, do you remember those cool observation towers they had? Some of the best views of the track from there, I remember my Mother filming us a lot from them, good memories for sure!

The 1st race I ever did was Clover Field. A TS 125 Duster from Stubb's Cycles with a rack on the back with a milk crate on it. Drove the bike from Clear Lake (NASA) to the races and unbolt what I could and throw it in the box. Race from the rubber band start and put it all back on and drive it home! I really wanted to race and my parents didn't even know where I was, they only let me have a bike since I could get a license at 15 and paid for it myself.

I remember the H& H team was the best. Steve Hackney with the ponytail. ? Hannah. Glen Johnson was on his way up then too.

Robbie Hobart used to ride for A.J. Foyt Cycles if I remember right. Those type of movies used to run all the time at U.S. Disco (Uncle Sams) on Westheimer and Pasadena.

Newmann, sorry I missed the Old Timers, I haven't been but once. I used to be a Rio Bravo regular.

Speaking of Curly Robinson, he was my dad. Passed in 1979. He ran Curly’s Cycles in Texas City in the late 60s to mid 70s.

My mom “Donna” #45, can be seen in the video above at 3:26 in getting off her bike to kick the exhaust back on. She raced all over even some flat track racing and she and my dad had a silk screen shop where they made a ton of shirts, jerseys and visors through the years. We went to Clover Field a lot and to Rio Bravo a lot, it was owned by Red Walling then. Pictured below.

My brother Curtis raced too for a couple of years until until he was killed while practicing at Clover Field. He was 7.
My dad didn’t race much because he lost his leg in a street bike accident in the mid 60s. He wore a fake leg from the knee down. He was a certified welder/pipe fitter and was always tacking someone’s bike back together at the track.

I was hesitant to ask about your brother, and didn't know he had a brother. To this day, I am obsessive about pit bike riding and will blow a whistle and yell to put a stop to it. A lesson learned at a very young age from your poor brother and heartbroken family. I wasn't there that day but have never forgotten it. May your family rest in peace. Your father helped me several times keep the bike on the track, in those days a welder at the track was near a neccesity.

Saw Red at the Houston SX last year in Steve Wise's suite, he treated me like a long lost son, and he had many of us. Not too hard to figure out where Red and Curly got their names by those pictures.

I'll be flagging the Houston SX again this year, excited about it!

It's really cool to have posts from guys like me, who were a part of the Texas...especially the Houston, TX racing scene back in the day. Lots of memories from Rio Bravo as well as Cloverfield...with me being introduced to Roger DeCoster, Brad Lackey & Jimmy Weinert by Wyman Priddy at a Trans-AM there in the early 70's. I was given a pair of Weinerts Carrera goggles and one of his team Kawasaki jerseys to hand out leaflets on the riding school he was giving with Billy Grossi the next day at the track. Jimmy was a great guy...and the fact that RD was so patient & classy with a starstruck kid like me forever sealed him as my hero.

Those were the good old days...

Anybody know this old guy from Rio Bravo, I think we called him Pop? That’s me on the cow. We have a pic of the cow humping one of our Maicos but I can’t find it.

Cloverfield did have some snow fencing. This video appears to be a compilation of clips from different tracks.

My brother Fred Hanna, myself Bob Hanna, my sister Cecile Hanna, Robert Tuggle, Don Rainey and Lyle Lovett the musician. Seems like there were a couple of others that I can't think of right now. I don't recall Holbart racing at Clover, but he may well have, it's been a long time.

Hey, Bob! Good to see you on here. Yeah, I don't know if Robbie ever raced at Cloverfield. I think Robbie was a night track hero...and rode the Texas MX Magazine night track off of the 610 loop almost exclusively. I didn't know Lyle Lovett raced on the H&H team. That's wild!
