At the risk of getting insulted , my question is what does the Richardson team gain by signing J Hansen ?
He's a career slacker as far as I can make out.

But, what the Richardson team gains is exposure. Even bad press is press nonetheless.

This is a rough comparison (so don't shoot me over it); however, look at Factory Connection starting with Mike LaRocco. The Rock was coming off some down years and most had given up on him, they figured they could grab him at a lower price and gamble on him turning it around. He did, and now look at the Torco squad.
Unfortunately, a poor performing Hansen may put in better rides than LaPaglia, who is the other 450 from their team going to the Moto X Championships... a huge press event.
If I were that team manager, I can't say I'd do the same; as Hansen has proved lately he's not deserving of a ride, but I can see where they are coming from with this move.
Maybe their gamble will pay off and they'll get some big time sponsor for next year to keep their new gem - maybe things won't and the team will get some press about their rider going to jail, getting in a fight, getting fired, or something like that... atleast people will be more aware of their team's existance.
I believe the Richardson team also has the Blose Brothers and Brady Sheren riding the West coast Lites class for them.

Just ask them, they will tell you.
