Thread revival time. My day today, snapped a chain 6 miles from the truck, then picked up 2 ticks pushing the bike out. One in my shorts, (shown) and another one had made it's way into the top of my butt crack. TMI but I just took the longest hottest most thorough shower of my life and gave myself a buzzcut only my wife will see. FUCK ticks, god I hate those things. Every piece of clothing is in the wash and I've been over the truck with a fine tooth comb. So far just the two. Creepy little mother fuckers. It could have been worse, we were close to civilization even though we were a ways from the truck. My son was nearby so he scooped me up and took me back to the truck. The ride was shortened but breakfast was right on time so no harm no foul. Anyway that was my ride today. Do you guys change your chains and or sprockets at regular intervals ? Or just wait for a problem to arise ?  That was the stock chain, and the bike has 2,156 miles. The sprockets looked pretty worked too so new chain, front sprocket and rear cassette time for me.  You guys been out pedaling ?

I noticed you are in SC. I work in the business park there and ride the dog park trails a couple times a week at lunch. No one at work rides so I am looking for some peeps to ride with. Let me know if you are ever around mid day and looking to ride.

And I got hit by a tick from that area a couple months ago right in the arm pit. Rode around noon and found it at around 5 and it had already dug in. Ripped that bitch out of there but it left a huge bruised area and hurt for weeks. Hate those MF'ers.

Yeah we’re all about midday rides. Im out next week, no bike till Thursday and that’s the 3rd of July. I’m a pool guy so that won’t happen. But after that I’m in. Dog park is tick capital of the world right now, I was five rides for five coming home with ticks so started going to Las Ramblas, there’s a lot of fun trails that are good right now and haven’t had any ticks. Today we started at Las Ramblas and road over the hill to the target trails as part of a loop, the chain broke about 3/4 of the way through that trail so I had to push it up a couple hills and kick through some brush on the side of the trail. Once we were on the sidewalk the guy I was with rode next to me and "Shoved" me to the Target parking lot.  I don’t know why San Clemente has, or seems to have so many more ticks than San Juan.

Oh man I’ve had so many ticks on me this year, I hate it!
One up stem tool is all I ride with. Has a chain tool and a spot for an extra link, all hidden in your stem. I’m kind of a minimalist and it is the most minimal of a useful setup in my opinion.   I break lots of chains

Wooden matches can be your friend.

Light a match, blow it out and touch the tick.

So weird that I read this thread and you guys are talking about ticks.

Ive been riding my eMTB a lot lately and I just had bad experience with fucking chiggers. I was getting bit everyday for over a week. All around my waist, groin, behind my knees, and arm pits. Super red and itchy bites. I thought maybe the dogs brought in flees at first, but I purposely wore white shirts and never saw a single flea. No one else in my family ever got bit.

I couldn’t find what was biting me for the life of me. I looked through all clothes, couches, truck seats, and nothing. Then my wife did some googling and the found that chiggers are in our area and my bites were a perfect spitting image of chigger bites.

Washed every single piece of clothing with hot water, Lysol disinfectant the inside of my dressers, and sprayed deet before I got dressed. Problem solved.

Never actually saw a chigger but I literally had bites that were text book to them, and followed the recommendation to treat them, and now I’m bite free.

Im convinced i picked them up while riding my emtb.

Fuck chiggers.

I was curious what a chigger is. They're small Mite larvae that inject shit into you  😧

I replace mine every 1,000 miles, or when something breaks. I always carry an extra link in a fanny pack with some basic necessities ie tube, sealant, bacon strips, c02 cart, small hand pump, bike tool, knife. I've had flats 10 miles away from the truck and learned the hard way, that shit sucks.

I'm game depending on if I get the bike back and what the 4th brings work, and company wise. Our house gets popular on the 4th 😄, being on a Friday my house might look like an Airbnb or an RV park, no idea who's coming or for how long lol. The following week I'm game any day, am, midday or afternoon don't matter.

Maybe a nooner with Beazrad ?  Beazrad if you're reading this I should warn you, Car Crash, Lobo, Fuzzbus, Don Juan, 5 dumb kids or whatever it's called ?  Those are kind of above my pay grade, I'm not really a "Drop Off" kind of guy, if we wind up on those I'll get down them eventually but bring a lunch cause you'll be waiting an agonizingly long time haha.  Phil's World, Shake and Bake, Mountain Lion trail, Dia, Sloppy Seconds, Cobra Kai, Bronco, 5 Steps etc. even the jump lines that have go arounds we're golden. The trails with drop offs, gap jumps, and the straight down ones aren't in my wheel house yet. (66 yrs old and lots of metal parts)

I have a small tool kit that has a chain breaker and from what I understand I may even have a masterlink hiding in my seat post ? lol.  Anyway I'm still learning and will be more prepared from now on.  I got a flat once and switched to tubeless and haven't had a flat since. I do want to get a way to add air on the trail, Manny you find any ticks ?

No bugs; but, I fart a lot these days and I’m pretty sure it gasses them.

We could sneak out early on the 4th and miss all the holiday-peeps and weekenders.

Rode today and…dude…I’m really lovin’ it. I’m figuring out some good mileage loops on the San Juan-Dana-Laguna ridges.

Chains are a major weak link (pun intended) on ebikes.  I check mine every few rides and once it gets to the .5 mark I just swap them.  Last chain I did I was swapping to a full AXS setup and went with the XX1 chain and its lasted FAR longer than the KMC chains I had been using. I'm probably at 700 miles or so and still in good shape. I try to keep a spare so that I can swap it right when I hit that mark. Also like mentioned above always keep a spare link with you too, these things are really hard on chains especially if you downshift under power a lot.

I was going to ride there (dog park) a couple of weeks ago, I need to make another mission down there it looks fun. I rode Hulda Crooks in Loma Linda & Summit Bike Park, and closed a chapter up at my folks AV trail system up in Lancaster / Quartz Hill as they've sold their place & are in the process of moving to Havasu. I put in about 170 miles in 5 days !

We could sneak out early on the 4th and miss all the holiday-peeps and weekenders.

Rode today and…dude…I’m really lovin’ it. I’m figuring out some good mileage loops on the San Juan-Dana-Laguna ridges.

You gotta replace chains way more often than a normal bike. Also ticks are a sucky part of being outside. It is what it is. Just an excuse for my wife to look at me a little more 😂

That over under looks pretty sweet. I haven't seen that out there.

I am good with any of the trails out there. I have been doing the same loop starting with Slopee Seconds so it will be nice to ride something different.

Bought some new toys for me and the boy, man these things are amazing! The automatic shifting is a nice feature but not always where I’d like it to be however you can override it easily. Unfortunately broke my T4 T5 T6, left wrist and dislocated my clavicle from my sternum about 2 months ago. Hoping to get cleared to ride again soon.

Heal fast Dirtydeeds, that looks like a painful list, I hope there's no lingering effects. Great way to spend time your son, he looks stoked !

How's the automatic shifting ? Do you like it ? You said sometimes it's not in the exact gear you want ? Is it adjustable through an app ? Do you have to charge it separately ? I watched a video about it, seems like it'd be weird in the beginning.  Some of the cross country trails we do I feel like I'm changing gears constantly and I can't count how many times I've been in the wrong gear, especially on downhill trails that have a "surprise" uphill lol.  But being in the right gear also is part of the fun ? or no ? 😄  Hope your back riding soon

To be honest my list of injuries sounds worse than it feels. Missed a couple days of work but have been on a light duty program. My guys won’t let me do any heavy lifting which is good.

You can still shift while in auto shift mode with this bike or with a simple push of a button you can switch to manual while riding. For the most part it’s pretty good but I do find myself manually shifting even while in auto mode. These e-bikes feel like cheating! Hoping to do some “physical therapy” soon with my boy!

One up stem tool is all I ride with. Has a chain tool and a spot for an extra link, all hidden in your stem. I’m kind of a minimalist and it is the most minimal of a useful setup in my opinion.   I break lots of chains

The new flat top sram transmission chain is way way stronger. I constantly broke xx1 chains on my analog bike. Flat top on my SL E has only broke once.

There’s some awesome stuff atop 89 just west of 395… same goes for 108…Aspens…trails that take you waaaay farther than you’d expect…great stuff.

Have an epic trip.

Happy 4th 💪🏻
