Holy 15-year thread revival! Also, damn, I miss Scottie...
Scottie was like the neighborhood’s favorite uncle 👌🏾🫡
That is a lifetime ago!!! I was at Cognac (France) in 1977 and at Angreau (Belgium) in 1983. Very impressed on both occasions by team USA.
I have flashes of Kent Howerton destroying dusty berms in 1977 and of David Bailey being so smooth in 1983.
Couple of takes on USA dominance and then the drop.
1. Supercross made us better riders in the 70's and 80's. More technical, more intense. I think that help lead to the USA dominance, even with the "B" team sent in 81 with the historic first victory.
2. Supercross also contributed to the drop in dominance, later on. In the first 15 years of SX, riders also focused just as hard or harder on outdoors. Then it became less focus on outdoors and SX became more specialized.
Barry Higgins and not Russ Darnell? Here's an article on the time https://vintagemotortees.com/innocents-abroad/
