That must have been after Japan decided to ignore the FIM 350cc rule.

Supercross is all about timing, not power. The reason the 350 should work indoors is the engineers can tune the power for more bottom/midrange, as opposed to peak hp. Combined with the smaller crank of the 350, they should end up with a better turning, more maneuverable bike. I don't know if it will be great, but it should work okay in SX

Good points as usual Cam.

To the already mentioned weight issue here, the bike is build so I can be transformed back to old school kick starter!

"All this weighs about 5 more pounds (because you get to deduct the weight of the kickstarter, kickstarter gear and idler gear). The total weight gain is 14 pounds."

"Optional kickstart. If you want a lighter 350SXF, you can install a kickstarter on the 350SXF. You get to remove the starter, battery and drive gear, but you need to add a kickstarter, kickstart shaft, idler gear and case plug."

Dunno how good this bike is for racers, but for average Joe who "feels" the 250 is to little, this could some answer...
Camp, supercross is all about timing, but there will be some obstacles right out of corners that the 450 will benefit from...no doubt

I never said the 350 would be superior to a 450 in SX. I just said it should be "okay". Capice?

Correct me if i'm wrong here but doesnt AMA rules dictate that all bikes come in at a minimum weight? And all the factory 450's are down to that minimum weight level as is. Meaning that it doesnt matter how light KTM make the 350 they still have to be at least as heavy as the rule book dictates.

That being said what it scales in at is less important to how it feels on the track, who cares if it weighs 300 kilos if it turns and flicks like a BMX bike when riding it.

yea i think thats the market in the US they are going for those who the 250's arent enough and the 450 are too much... IF i ever decide to get a tractor again id seriously look at the 350 1st, but the low end grunt of a 450 suits my short shifting riding style better so idk if id buy one in the end or not, BUT with my leg jacked up the thought of the magic E button keeps looking at KTMs being the brand i would choose from...

hey...i know ktm's are built with pride and quality and they are very trick scooters. but something about them for mx and sx doesn't jive with success. maybe that will change with roger at the helm.

but what i mentioned about mikes 350 ktm at PALA is true...slower-n-hell

I think BobbyM hit the nail on the head with that one. It's obviously a slug compared to it's competition in the pro class. Mikey would've been top three this year or better if he'd been on a 450.

A few random comments.

1) Yes, I have ridden many a KTM w/ a electric start and I just feel it's not needed. In fact I feel it's downright stupid on a 2 stroke. Properly jetted (FI?) bikes start in 1-2 kicks every time anyways. For Pro racing the ability to quickly restart your bike does offer some significant advantages so I like that KTM offers the electric starter kit in the Hard Parts catalog. They should at least sell the system w/ a 3# lighter lithium Ion battery stock. The MSRP is also quite high which is another good reason to ditch the electric start.

2) Since the bike makes 47 rwhp stock, I'd imagine in full race tune it would easily hit 55+ rwhp. More than enough for outdoor work and similiar to what the 450s work with although admitedly the 450s come w/ significantly more tq. Doesn't seem to slow down AC down.

3) M. Alessi said in an interview that the 350 is no disadvantage in outdoor MX because the tracks have a lot more momentum but that on a supercross track the 450 is better because of the need for instant boost.

4) I care what a bike actually weighs on the scales as much as how it feels. Actual weight effects the braking, the acceleration, my ability to bring it back, and how hard the thing is to lift off of my leg after a crash! I don't want an MX bike that weighs as much as an XR250 did 10 years ago!

Evidently Mike's contradicted himself because he's said several things that suggest the 350 can't get a start unless conditions are right.

None of this changes the fact that KTM didn't intend the bike be used in a 450 class, it was made for the 350 class and if things continue as they are it will end up just like the 144 and 150.

Mike can't turn faster laps than the top guns in the Lites class.

100% Mike 0% Bike.

A bike is only as good as its rider!!!

So AC can't make the 350 good enough to race Dungey but it's fine for GP competition, sounds plausible.

I guess my 2 cents would be the fact that Alessi on average beats 32 of the 450's per moto.
So if the 350 is a turd then I'd hate to be of of those 450's he's killing.
