A few of us ended up chatting about some old eastern WA tracks in a different thread.  I was hoping to get all the Tri Cities area forum members to show up here and share any old Horn memories or photos.  Some of the earliest picture I’ve been able to find were taken by Washougal announcer Brian Barnes at a 1985 Yamaha Gold Cup.

That’s Phil Larson on the KX….Ryan Huffman on the YZ 80…

Love seeing all the old photos from Horn. I'm sure you have some Mabton pictures also.  I have followed the old FB page and all the many photos and racers that have posted there.

Right on.  I started that group and was hoping for even more old pictures to come out and be shared…still there’s lots of cool stuff there.

The earliest Horn results I can find are from 1983.  My dad said he swears he did a sand drag race deal out at Horn Rapids before in was the ORV park…maybe 1981 or 82.

I missed Mabton in its true heyday.  I believe they stopped racing there in 87.  About 10 years later Squisher set up a few play/practice days and then in the winter of 97/98 did a few old school races.  It was 3 motos per class and rubber band start like the 70s.  He kept having some events out there until 07ish.  I know I have pictures from out there on my 125 Husqvarna in 03.  Then the other guys took it over and cut down all the trees and lasted a few years 10/11…before it closed.

I would like to know the location of the Kiona track…out around Benton City I assume?

I really liked this off camber lump.  This is Dan Moore on a 85 KX 250.  The 2nd year I raced they took this out and put in the tunnel jump that’s still there..

Good thread idea, Maybe a list of tracks might get some guys to post up their observations and track experiences. I'm gonna include  Idaho tracks also.

Horn rapids

Mabton

Moses lake

Sun Target, aka Moxee

Kiona in Benton city

Starbuck

Spokane orv

Huetter Mx

Sandpoint, Idaho

They even had races at the Benton/ Franklin fairgrounds in Kennewick in the late 70's

The Ellensburg fairgrounds(Where your buddy Morgan broke his ankle doing the triple as a 250 junior in 91?)

To see where the old Kiona track is,.... its now an orchard...take the Benton city exit off I82 and head south on Badger road. On your left(east) will be a valley filled with apple trees(where the track used to be). At about a mile or so you would take a left to get into the track. You'd drive into the valley and up the other side where everybody parked.

Back in the day folks would ride hang gliders off the Horse heaven ridge to the southwest of the track. This is the same ridge Inslee wants to put 200 windmills.

I'll try to raid moms picture albums of big brother racing this week . God bless mom, but I think 95% of the pics she took of me were blurry.

1989 Eastern Wa. Dirt Riders MX race.

The only race I ever participated in where there was a trophy girl. Of course I made sure I won that day as I was a young guy with limited abilities in attracting hot chick's. If you won your class you got a picture with the trophy girl. Either you could A, stand beside her,  B, have her kissing your cheek...or C...full on lip lock!

I was all in!

Awesome!!! Eric Waunch has pics from that day.  I went to the spring hare scramble in ‘86.  I remember my dad racing his CR 480 with no gloves.  Back then it was 3 18-20 mile loops.  I didn’t ride it myself until ‘94.  Id like to see these chicks today!!

I should have some stuff in the photo boxes I’ll rummage through them

What I would really love to see is some pictures of alderdale or toes!

Here’s a pic of most of the old Team Farm crew from fall of 06 at a private track that I’m sure Sandberm and definitely myself look back on fondly IMG 0550

Here’s another photo from a private track just down the road a mile or two from team farm. Not quite as old school as the other posts here but still good memories IMG 2051 1

That has to be Ossmans….I never did ride there.  Think I see Oscar and Justin in that picture.  Who had the 2nd track?

I rode some at Bauder’s in the mid 90s…remember it was kind of sketchy….technical and all on a hillside/canyon.

I don’t have any pictures of Alderdale.  It was short lived…I rode there in 04 several times and I think it closed the next year.  I do have a lot of pictures from Connell…it ran a good chunk…from ‘93-‘00.

Yep that was Ossmans it was a killer track real technical the other is Urlachers which was really fast with a few tight sections

I saw what’s left of bauders a few years back but only from across the canyon.

I never got to ride the track in Connell unfortunately but a friend of mines family owned it and he still had a couple small tracks over looking the prison near a few old buildings up until he got out of moto, they also had a pretty cool mini sprint dirt track I hear. It would be cool to see some pics if anyone has any

As far as alderdale goes I think I only got to ride it a handful of times also, but man those few rides sure stuck in my mind that track was killer!

Kiona closed in 79 I believe.

Jeff Ossmam's track.  Fun little track in and out of the trees.

Horn when first opened had the steep man-made jumps that you had to turn in the air or you went off the track.  The first practice was kaos 🤣

The first layout at Connel, Kaiser and myself did a lot of work on it.  Didn't have much time to get it setup and be raceable.

Roger did a lot of work on his track with just a bobcat.

Mark Bradley did a nice job at Alderdale

That first race at Connell was fun. I had a good time. Problem was the 30 foot start straight.

When they incorporated that bit of north hill it was more fun though still tuff to pass.

Here are a few Connell pictures.  Good memories, I remember the first race was the first weekend in July ‘93.  I rode a RM 80 through June for Pac West.  That first Connell race was my first race on a 125.  Awesome dirt and it really opened up the track when the extra up/down hill was added.  It was crazy that they ended up having a CMC PAC West round there in 2000.

Here’s that start you’re talking about…my sister lining up for the pee wee class.  Seems like the next year they added a real starting gate.

Wow. I had no idea that Connell lasted as long as it did. I quit full time racing at the end of 93, did 4 races in 94 then let all my mag subscriptions end and began my Oct thru fall only riding schedule begin which I did through 2012 or13. I couldn't afford to get hurt during the farming season.

Now that I'm older I wish I would have stayed in touch with local scene even if not racing. Remember when Steve Maier(the Olympic  skier)used to flag at Horn for Pat?

Did any of you Tri Cities guys ever ride behind the Pasco airport? There was a killer natural track back there with huge berms and deep rollers the entire way around it. I was still riding out there as late as 2017 when I had to quit riding back there because of development

I don't think I rode that one but it sounds similar to the track that was about a mile to the northeast of Douglas fruit along that dirt powerline road. They had one race there in the late 70's/early 80's.

There is some squatter looking guy who lives near there now and rumor is he is not very nice.

I raced Sandpoint a cople of times same as Clarkia.

In the early 70s ,74 I think, there was a track around the area of the now Rd 100. They had few races before being shut down.

Yes…my dad said they rode at RD 100 regularly and there were several tracks laid out in the mid/late 70s.

I’ve always heard nothing but great things about Sun Targets.  Too bad it closed right before I started racing.  Really, it looks like it only ran about ‘83-‘86.  I remember always hearing rumors in the early 90s that it could possibly reopen.

I did do lots of racing in the Yakima fairgrounds.  Lee Collins had several different tracks out there from 96-02.  CMC ran a Pac West round there in 97.  Also races AX in the Sundome in the late 90s.

Sandberm…yes I remember Mike doing that triple in Ellensburg.  My dad bought his 90 CR 250 after he broke his foot there.  I still have a trophy from that weekend…

Rd 100 was fun I only rode there a few times unfortunately. I think the last ride out there for me was about 2013

Suntarget was a fun fun track. A lot of good races in the hey day.  Great turnout, pro class was always a good gate.  Jim Pomeroy smashed my 480 pipe passing me on the first jump past the start.

Sandberm where did you farm?

Same story with me and farming.  Raced a lot at Woodland during wiwinter.

Eaton, Larson's , Buffaloe, Burkhart, Larry Ward, so many raced that track.  Was great for me, more sand than slick clay.  Always changed the track in so many different ways. Don't forget the big double(in it's day) had to  jump it both directions.

I'll never forget Larry Ward on an 80 at Sun Targets in Moxee. He'd ride up to the concrete start, hit the front brake, and balance his bike on the front wheel for what seemed an eternity.
