Welcome Doug! Never got the opportunity to see you ride, but saw your name and pictures in the magazines often back then!
Always great to hear stories of those days, especially from those who were the people at the top during those years.
We are making old school progress, I know of Scott Brown, Paul Denis, Larry Brooks (off and on), and now Doug Harrington that post on here (at least those that do not hide who they really are). I am sure there are numerous others that lurk in the shadows or hide under generic user names?

Hey doug, whats going on? Does your uncle or cousin still make that Tenessee moonshine? lol I remember James Degain being passed out for like 2days after drinking that stuff. I see Brett Leaf every once in awhile, and we talk about you and the good old days......

Man, I've been reading all of the post in this old school moto section and finally decided to signup. Actually it was seeing Doug Harrington post on here that finally pushed me over the edge. I am going to try and post some pictures from Ponca in 1982. I thought I had some of Paul from 1982 but I can't find them. I probably threw them away. haha

What are you talking about Paul. As I remember you killed it that year. That new Kawi was so good. I had the #1 plate from the year before, but there was no way anyone could stay with you at ponca that year.

Are you be sarcastic or what with your reply to this post?

#54 was Kyle Fleming, #99 was Mike Healey and you can see Bruce Bunch #6 in 6th place. Kyle, Bruce and Rick Hemme (I don't see him in this photo) were killed just days and hours later.

If you click on my avatar, the Texans logo, that should take you to my profile. Once there you should see the photo album. You can click on the pictures to view and then click one more time and they will come up in a large window for better viewing.

A funny story: We were all waiting at the line to pick our spots and someone asks Paul where he was going to line up. His reply, "I'm the chief so I will line up wherever I want to" and then says "I'm the chief" a few more times. I still remember that.

Larry, I had never met Bruce or even talked to him but I sure knew who he was. After the last race that year Bruce and I were walking across the starting line heading back to where we were pitted. I asked Bruce who won the race, because I finished pretty far behind him.........His reply, "Denis the Dick" Of course a couple hours later that terrible tragedy happened.

Paul, I'm sure you can find some humor in that.

Hey Larry
This post by Paul was a response to Charlie O, who basically stated that PD did not really accomplish much back in the day. At least it got Paul to jump into the forum and share some memories of the past. The one Scott B posted was about the Harry's party and Charlie's response about coming to the event. Scott came to the Harry's party and hung out with all the guys. I had not seen him for 25 years and he had changed just a little bit like you said. LOL
Good to see you are doing well.
Post some of those pictures from the 80's when you get some time.

LB is CO. Why don't you just come out and admit it Charlie. Or, if this is really LB, why don't you simply verify where you grew up and where you live now. Also, To Paul's point, "average rider" ,come on, Paul was one of the fastest mini riders to ever show up at Ponca. As for Bruce, I wouldn't feel bad on the "Dick" comment. Bruce was extreamly competitive and diced with Paul on a daily basis at Saddleback. It's human nature to talk trash after a moto, especially when he took third with a broken wrist. Geeze, I was one of his close child hood pals and he called me a dick everyday. Bruce was a pretty radical guy! Shii, he punched Taylor in face one time for basically no reason. Then he comes back in the door a few minutes later and says' hey want to go hang out.

Blake i remember B and J MX, and also , the track in Cadiz, Ky.

When i first moved to Tn from Fla, in 84 i raced at B and J mx 4-5 times, and also the Cadiz , Ky track, and i became friends with Johns son, after i got my bike stolen , i still wanted to be involved in mx so i would go and work at B and J , did every thing from being a flagger to working the start gate etc, they had a Lorrettas regional there one year, i remember Sean Kalos, came in his bus all the way from AZ, he didnt have much luck as in his first motos he broke his wrist, also Mike Brown was there in the sr mini class i think.
I went in the US Navy in 1987 until 1991 so didnt know much about it then, and by that time the track was still there, but they didnt race there any more, but i had got another bike while i was in the Navy and loved to go practice there on weekends, well one weekend some guy crashed pretty hard, and dinged his neck, we said you should go have that checked out, he didnt and decided to ride some more, well he crashed again landed on his head broke his neck and it paralyzed him, so later he tried to sue the landowner, who was rich as hell, it didnt work, but they put up a fence so no one else could ever ride there again, and now theres apartments built on the land,
as far as Cadiz, ky track john also ran and promoted it, it was at the county baseball/ softball park,i raced there a few times after i got out of the navy, then in 94/95 i think the county shut it down.

What are you guys talking about? I guess people have come on here calming their other people. I agree about shit talking and being overly competitive. Paul and I had are races to the death back in the day. Him and I would go at it every race, well once I got fast enough. Coming from the Dunes, I had a hard time trying to figure out how to go fast at Saddleback. Once we figured out that you had to be fast at Saddleback to be anybody, my Dad would take me there everyday so I could try to go fast on this slick ass, hard pack shit.
This will show you who this is; Paul and I in are days battling were racing a Ponca qualifier at Barona Oaks (I think is was a qualifier) and I holeshoted the 2nd moto and crashed. My bike hit the ground and the throttle pulled off the bars and the bike was wide open. I had hit my head pretty hard and ran to my bike and picked it up at the exact same time that Paul was coming by and when I picked it up the bike took off, flying out of my hands. My bike shot right into Paul and took him out hard, breaking his arm. Next thing I knew Jack (Paul's Dad) ran up to me and started screaming at me that I had done this on purpose. I was just a little kid and I couldn't have done this on purpose, even if I tried. This all happened the before all of us 80 Experts were suppose to race during intermission at the San Diego Supercross. I wasn't able to race because I had a concussion and obviously Paul couldn't race because he had a broken arm. Anyway, this hung over my head for years, because I felt so bad about being the reason another rider broke his arm (even if Paul and I didn't get along very well) and have Jack yelling at me that I had done this on purpose.

So if this doesn't prove who I am, then I'll answer your question about were I grew up. I actually lived in two different places during these years, Alhambra and South Pasadena. Oh and another thing don't any of you guys ever call me Charlies Osterday. We all know Osterday and I don't think you guys would ever want someone to say that you him. LOL.

Are we good now?

Your right Paul. We were far from friends, but a lot of time has past and I have grown up a lot. I was such a "hot head" back then and we did have some crazy ass battles. But that was then and this is now. So, no hater here. This is really Larry (LCool .

Trust me, I wasn't pumped that you spanked all of our asses that year at Ponca, but dam, you did. I had the #1 plate and you were the last one that I wanted to win, but you killed it that year and I had nothing for you. But no one did, so what can I say. I know I was the biggest dick ever back then, but like I said I've grown up a lot.

How about when you guys (Kawasaki) protested Bruce's, Rick's and my stock bikes that year at Ponca and then Rudy (Suzuki) protested every Kawasaki that crossed the finish line in the final. I was just looking at a picture at my Mom's house with all those bike in that fenced in area. What sucked about all this, was this was were all of us were when Bruce, Rick and Kyle were killed. That day was the worst day of my life.

You want to hear some funny shit? Jimmy Button married my wife sister, so now me and Jimmy are "Brothers". Now how is that? Funny yea?? Jimmy is actually a really cool guy and I get to talk MX at Christmas, Thanksgiving and all the holidays.

Are you serious? I never meet Bruce Bunch? LOL. OK! I guess you don't know much about me or who my teammates were when they were all killed at Ponca that year. WOW!
