Back in the day, this place started out as a small group of friends. There was plenty of good-natured ribbing, lots of riding discussion, and people pretty much knew where to draw the line when it came to bashing...whether it was riders, or each other.

These days? Damn, I know the economy's bad, but wow, I can't say it's just that. There sure seem to be a bunch of grumpy people. It's fairly tough to find anyone posting anything positive, and it doesn't sound like anyone's having any fun. I thought we were all here because we actually liked the sport. Am I wrong? There are quite a few of you who act like you need to get some riding time in to put a smile back on your face.

Then I get goofballs who sign up repeatedly about as fast as I can click them, like it's some kind of game, and board vets who've been clicked a bunch of times, and when I'm slow to let them back doing everything they can to get back on, down to calling me a racist. I've gotten to the point where I've decided that there are some guys (even when they're moto fans) who aren't worth trying to rehabilitate, mostly because they don't add anything to the board even when they're here.

Yes, it's summer, and yes, there are a lot of new members. Part of that is due to school being out (which accounts for a few of the "Which _________ should I buy?" threads). Props to those of you who give them a decent answer. Most of us were probably in that spot at one time or another. Heck, I've done the same thing this summer regarding the trailer I'm traveling in this summer on RV web sites.

I'm sure I can already hear the, "It's because we can't haze the noobs argument." I don't mind if people get called out for posting dumb stuff, but a blanket "STFU noob" for anyone new who shows up? That's what I've always objected to. Besides (ahem), a bunch of the board vets here could do a lot to step up their game when it comes to post quality.

I'd like to suggest that everyone do what they can to add to the quality, and think before you click the submit button. Does what you're add to the board? Or ad to nothing but your post count? My favorite posters have always been the ones with not a whole lot to say (they go for quality over quantity), but make you sit up and take notice when they do post.

So...what's your take? Anyone agree or disagree?

Fuckin' A.

Let's ban some of the nut jobs around here. Start with Ol' Ger first.

And since you let Bobby back in (again), I say we let Ringer back in.

That's my .03 cents.
that's ok with me...but i never insulted and insinuated to guyb what ringer did now did i chuckie boy?

you seem to have studied this issue at length so please compare myself and ringer and what was posted/emailed. Smile

don't you have yer own club anyways chuckie?

then again maybe ringer is one of the perpetual returners here and has never left? hehehe....l

very good post GuyB, Self-moderating is an ideal situation but would only work when the board is small, a bunch of guys who know each other a bit; as soon as it grows and more and more, from all horizons, are coming in, the more you need 'regulations". Like a small new city or a small new country, the bigger and the more immigrant get in the more you need rules and regulations to keep balance, respect and quality.

How about an emotional IQ exam requirement for starting an account? That might weed out the irrational admiration and blind hatred some members have for certain riders.

Maybe you could add a baseline spelling/grammar threshold to eliminate the 12 year olds and the people who live to correct everyones spelling and grammar.

Then, just for fun, filter out all the popular obscenities so the young guys can see just how creative BobbyM really is.

let people hammer the morons for crappy posts. This will make them think before hitting submit. Bring back Horndog, Ringer, and Big Lenny. Make this place fun again.

I think most on here love the sport but there are negatives in our sport. Are we supposed to ignore them?

There are positives as well i do think we need to point them out.

Shouldn't the board "evolve" too?

I mean, besides the facebook crap, this board has zero improvements since it's inception.

Not trying to be debbie downer, just stating some facts, since this seems to be a "whine thread"...

I think it's just message boards. I know people have the "profile" option, but there's no telling how many kids are on here etc.

I always enjoy chatting motocross with people in real life, but for some reason message boards are a place where opinions clash, and opinions that don't get spoken often in real life, are stated here.

There have been social-psychology studies on road rage, that seem similar to the message board phenomenon. For example, if you're walking in a street and you nearly bump into someone, you and the other person exchange facial expressions, or verbal cues acknowledging each other in a sincere manner. This recognition obviously doesn't take place when someone cuts you off in traffic, so people are more likely to lay on the horn.

Similarly, discussing motocross in real life shares the same kind of features: you can usually tell when you need to shut your mouth in real life - unlike messageboards.

I'm kind of curious to do some research on this topic. I think this type of stuff goes on with all sorts of message boards. I know I've seen it in cycling forums I've joined in the past.

Get rid of non-moto, and kill all political (other than specific OHV land use issues) and religion oriented posts that end up on the moto board.

Bauer's right, boards change. It's way more combative in a mean spirited way, and about stupid stuff. Even with the new and tamer Bauer (sorry Steve). When the advice to noobs is to check the vibe for awhile before posting, the vibe suggests they should come on swinging.

Sometimes the long timers have said all they really have to say on interesting stuff. Then they either stop posting or 90% of their posts seem to be talking crap about one another over something that started . . . whenever, ala Chuck and Bob in this thread.

If someone flips me off in traffic I will chase them to the end of the earth and confront them! I believe in accountability and I think that is what message boards lack!

i agree Steve. this place is a lot different than when i was banned back in January, it seems a lot more hostile than i remember. i've been guilty of everything mentioned in the original post, however i have definitely taken a step back during my time off and realized it wasn't worth the hassle of "trying" to be a dick head.

I think you're right on this.. can I borrow your bike? Whistling

The economy is taking a toll for sure, I do think things are starting to turn around some, I know it is for myself. I've found hitting the gym does wonders, and results in less broken bones.

The quality over quantity thing is cool, but, I think you have to be careful with that idea... MT comes to mind.

It would be cool if people could discuss criticisms and comments about riders or incidents, without being labeled a "hater" and attacked by people acting as lobbyists for said riders, and teams. I would say most decent threads go down in flames because of this, and the resulting mindless bickering that follows. It's tired and worn out.

JMO... now about that bike...

Is it really spilling over into Moto? I haven't seen it. Having said that it's still better than Quad threads and posts with 2T and 4T. All of the things that are turning Moto into a cesspool are not coming from the Non-Moto side. The people turning the Moto side into a cesspool wouldn't even be able to figure out how to get past their browser crashing on the forum index to even get into the Non-Moto side.

My experience, for what it's worth, is that the personality clashes and lack of restraint that start or get indulged at non-moto cross over to moto.

Addition of the non-moto board was the single worst thing that happened at MT and MD, IMO, in terms of having a stable tone to the boards.

I agree. I see a totally different bunch of idiots in Moto... I don't see any "arguments" brought from non-moto over...

When you're younger it's easy to believe that people mature and act generally smarter as they get older. As YOU get older it becomes apparent that isn't always the case. The internet only bolsters that phenomena. Relative anonymity on the interwebz brings out the worst in some people. It's all about how big of a dick you can be and garner attention.

The problem is that while you try and get "attention" you're often times only laughing at yourself and your self-perceived witty and stinging internet posts. It's quite annoying and frustrating to everyone else. Yamaboy isn't innocent by any means historically, but experience has taught him well. No matter how much time you give them, some people will just never understand or respect their fellow man. Perhaps there are advantages to being blissfully ignorant (or at least acting that way).

There is some truth to "stepping back from the keyboard." Take time to evaluate you life, your loved ones, and what's happening in the world. It's not worth smashing your keyboard or seeing how many idiotic responses you can post.

In the end some things are funny, some things are frustrating, and some things aren't worth the cyber space they're posted on. Know how to differentiate and you'll be much the wiser. For God's sake though, never lose your edge . . . dot com.

Good luck GuyB.

all the quad hate is getting out of hand as well. i don't care for quad's or quad's on a track, but it's a part of life and the track i ride at allows them to ride and race. no use bitching about it. but people here call quad riders "homos" and "fags"... crossing the line.

And ignorant racial statements are an awesome way of showing everyone (including mods) that you'd like a vacation from the site.

Thanks for stepping forward so I could help you out with this.

That's the point NikHil - who knows you were kidding? It's hard to detect humor, sarcasm etc. when there's no voice inflection. People need to look at how their post is likely to be perceived... same as email at work.
