That's right. How are you doing and good to hear from you. I always wondered where you went. I live just outside of Austin TX now, married with 3 teenage kids. Your dad was pissed in Houston for good reason. I don't think anyone had any idea who really won. I got second behind G. Holland in the 85cc 7-11 and to this day I don't know how I didn't get that overall. That's about the only mud race I ever rode well in.

Congrats on the kids and believe me, you have a long road ahead but lots of fun. You guys need to change the nickname, your mom was so nice and put up with a lot. Mike Theisen was the guy and he is one of the managers at Honda of Houston now. He won that Twisted Sister contest on MTV back then. I believe 1 winner/state, he won the Iowa contest and went on the road with the band.

I raced until 1997 then didn't ride till I bought a 450 to play on about 4 yrs ago, broke my foot bad right away and that was it for me. I miss riding but not the injuries that come with it. The nonly bike I own is a Harley to cruise on. I have a 19 yr old son, 16 and 15 yr old daughters. None wanted to ride really bad. Son played football and my daughters both play select Basketball. My brother has a son who races minis now in Iowa.

I don't really care about the IA top 50 thing. There are a lot of riders that could be included but it did get me on these blogs for the first time ever. My younger brother called me and told me about this site.
Glad you are all doing well. I always wondered where you were.

MR 50 Racer, This is the 6th place trophy from the 1977 GNC in the Astrodome, I was not proud of my performance that day. but I kept the trophey, lol I think that you may have got a plaque for placing in the top 3. This was the first time I seen the "big wheel" mini's from California. They without a doubt outclassed all of us Texas boys. The hot shot ridders that were my friend like Von Thomas, and Kevin Jones, all got a lesson that day.

Hey, humyam1u,

Can you identify any of these guys from the 1977 NMA championship race at Rio Bravo?

That doesn't look like the 1977 NMA trophies. I had a large walnut looking plague that had a blue anodized plate on it that was engraved with the NMA logo for the event. It was actually kind of neat and I kept it for quite a while but I pitched it years ago.
DON'T know why but got sick of all that stuff.

RH 340&Mr-50, I am sure this one is from the 1977 NMA finals at Rio Bravo. Trophey's provided by Big Bubba Johnson's dad. I am the red head, and"http://i41.tinypic.com/ictl5t.jpg">

I am not sure if this one was for the qualifying for the big race at Rio Bravo, or if it was the Trophey;s presented after the astrodome race from the GNC in 1977. It seems like the also gave out a small medal with GNC on it also, but I have no idea what happened to it

Maybe they gave trophies for some places but I know that 2nd was a big plague. Are you sure that wasn't a GNC trophy and not an NMA? I don't remember mine saying Texas State Championship on it either but it been a long time.

Tray,

I look forward to seeing your pictures. I rode the 83cc stock expert 7-11 and the 105 open. For whatever reason, the only '76 pictures I can find are of Central qualifiers (Nebraska City, NE; Byron, IL; Cedar Rapids, IA) and not of the National at Springfield.

Please post or include a link. I'm excited to relive the old days...

What was the name of the track in Springfield? Was it Freddy Vans Cycleland or something like that?

RH340,
I am not sure of the name, but it was something like that. I seemed like the track's dirt was black mulchy tree bark like, and it seemed real loose. I just remember kissing the trophey girl.,at age 7 when i recieved my trophey. lol I am sure it was my first kiss. Hornetdriver I will send them to you when i get them online. I did have the oppertunity to speak to Ron Hendrickson NMA founder a few weeks ago and he and I had a great old school conversation about the 76 and 77 NMA finals. He said that the reason Rio Bravo never held them again was because of the poor toliets they had. I just remeber they had this old wooden building with rotting floors that had no running water, so it was like a big out house. I was bit by a spider in there and yes on a bad place lol.
