So the bike worked and ran fine. I took the bike apart to clean. Drained all of the gear oil/ engine coolant and took the motor out to clean it, so it set for weeks without any gear oil. When I put the bike back together I filled it with the Honda recommended HP4 Trans oil, threw a brand new OEM 2002 clutch cable on, routed correctly, and with the major and minor adjustment I can get the clutch to pull and even adjust the free play but the problem is the clutch is not disengaging.
I've only fired it up in neutral and let it run a couple of times but with the motor off when I pull the cable and put it in gear it's not disengaging and letting the rear tire move in first.
I've seen where the plates get stuck and guys rev the bike up and put in first on a hill to try and get the plates to free up, but otherwise wondering what's going on? I never touched the clutch plates/basket as it worked fine before.
What happens when the engine is running?
The only times I've cranked it I've left in neutral. Was too afraid to drop it in gear on the stand 😂 but that is what I will try next.
Again, I didn't touch the basket or clutch plates and it was running fine before. I'm thinking the plates are just sticking...
The guy before me just ran 10w40, but I put in the Honda HP4 recommended oil which is a good bit tackier so that may be why.
Likely it will be fine when you try to ride it, plates normally drag a lot especially in first gear. It's not enough to move the bike
Yeah I'm slowly realizing that this is normal. I've just forgotten after not owning one of these for about a decade and am hypersensitive to everything putting it back together 🤞
