Not when you are doing the "told you so" thing.

Then you just get to be a dick.

Smile

Besides, you people said "wouldn't happen."

It did.

nayh...

TFS, I'm glad you were right about the 350's, I dig the idea.
So, what is your opinion when the 250 class will be 2 and 4?

From an Everts interview about the 350 ....

http://www.dirtrider.com/features/web_exclusive/141_0911_ktm_350_sx_f_w…

SE: I've been riding it step by step. When we went out testing, it didn't mean we went out the next week testing. Sometimes it was a period of two, three, four weeks before I could go out again with the next step ready. Everything took a long time. We started off in 2007, we did a comparison test, and we tried to have a lot of information, and my main goal was to have a good handling bike. This is something really important, that you can really have fun with it. And I guarantee you if you can't have fun with this bike, than you can't have it with any other bike.

Looks like the 350 was being worked in '07. Engineering takes a long time; engineering development takes forever.

Ha!

Hey I did some checking. The story did not start in 2006. It was 2007, in April, at the GP of Spain at Bellpuig. We had a weekend off in SX so I went to Spain.

I happened to run into Steve Whitelock over there, who was there for meetings with the FIM about engine displacement. SX people had put him up to it because 450s were tearing up tracks. He found out that they had issues with 450s as well, and an agreement was reached to push the OEMs to develop 350s. They had a press conference and that is when most people heard about it.

Everyone called bullshit.

After the press conference, I walk around to the far side of the track to the Italian restaurant tent. It was late and about to close, and I run into Everts. We sit down and have dinner, and I told him about the press conference and asked what he thought about the 350 idea.

That was the first he heard about it, but his first reaction was they should push back about a year and work on 450s instead, maybe lower the sound a lot more first. But, they went to work on 350s anyway.

That fall, at the FIM awards at Monaco, I met with FIM MX Pres Wolfgang Srb because they had a second meeting on it that same weekend. The decision was made to go with 350s in MX1 at that time. I remember telling him that people on line thought this was all a lie and he just laughed.

KTM built one. I think the rule change got derailed due to the economic crash. The Japanese pushed back really hard.

As far as 250 2s vs 250Fs, I think it's a waste of time right now. People have emotional attachments to 2-strokes, but those days are just gone.

Two-strokes could make a comeback if those injected ones ever appeared.

I think, in future MX millenia, that KTM, the future monopoly of all that has 2 wheels and is intended for off-road, will abandon the designation of motorcycle models by their CC displacement and, instead, call them all by the names, "Bruhn Pee Wee", "Bruhn Mini", Bruhn Maxi", and "Bruhn Uh-Oh".

Of course, all will be affixed with a gas tank label as required by the high priest BO: "This is a high performance vehicle. Under no circumstances during the course of operation of this vehicle shall you 1) carry an unholstered projectile-firing weapon of any kind, nor 2) attempt to pre-load the suspension in such a way as to decrease the natural gravitational offset of the mass of this vehicle. Defiance of either constitutes ground for banishment from a meaningless motoboard that you don't care about anyway. You have been warned."

Back to simpler times.... a pic from TFS' old stomping grounds. Flying Wheels MX in Fort Rucker, Alabama. Circa 1980. I took the picture but I'm not sure who the rider is.

Sounds good!

Nice to chat with you. Us pioneer legends need to stay in touch. (Even if you are a "mini-me.")

Godspeed, Steve! I know that someday I will join you in Heaven and we'll seat bounce among the angels, praising His glory! I can see you now, sleeping in the clouds next to baby Jesus, wearing your C-Pap with a contented smile on your face...Praise the Lord!

Just fucking with you, you godless Fat Bastard! I hope some part of you was still lingering around long enough to get some grins out of watching me drive five hours from Atlanta Airport to Bumfuck, Alabama for your funeral! LOL!

I loved that guy!

I miss Bruhn so much...he was brilliant, kind and utterly unique. I'm honored to have been his friend. Those of you who never met him missed out on something special. RIP, TFS!
