Little update from my experience. I saw someone post (username had a 19 in it) they ran 45 sportsman & I remember that post resonating with me but i can't find it anymore. I ran 25+ & 30+ & got absolutely stomped. I was in a dark place from Friday to about Monday or Tuesday. I came in what i thought was decently prepared to run okay but once i hit the track it's like i completely forgot how to ride. I finished in the 30's every moto. Contemplated life & racing a lot out there. It's a hard track for me. I live out west right now & did not adapt very well to the course. The heat was gnarly but for me I rode better laps 5-10 in every moto. I think that's cause about 3 laps in I start to stop worrying & just lock in. My lap times 2nd half the moto were much more competitive. I just never ran anything fast just consistent.

I got 2 decent starts, crashed first turn in one of them & then first lap pile up in the other one. My other 4 starts were battling for last. Everybody is fast. the 38th place dudes in +25 are not letting you by or easy to pass, unless you're a top guy. +30 is a little softer on the bottom but it's just a tighter class from 5th-35th. where 25 has a bigger fall off in speed.

Overall i was super bummed, did not perform anywhere near my best. Struggled to let er rip on the course, rode tight & scared. It's all mental. I came into the week telling everyone that i just wanted to do the laps & keep my day job. My goal was to finish all the laps, so i guess i accomplished that but feel let down because I set my goal too low, then mentally i just was f***ed from the start.

Never once when i was out there did i think "damn i wish all the top guys would get kicked out of this class so i can do better." I mean sure that'd be cool for me to finish a little better but it'll be exceptionally rewarding to return to the ranch & get some better finishes. I'll head back in a year or two & set my goal higher! Top 25's.

Loretta's Passion was the other thread.

I share your problem with setting my goals too low.  I had an issue with last racing there in 1994.  30 years later this was my  first time racing at the Ranch and was just happy to be there and qualify with a guaranteed spot from Red Bud, but just couldn't get myself to be aggresive.  Didn't want to yard sale myself and just rode slow. My wife actually told me I should go for it because if I didn't I'd regret it.

I think one issue is that you REALLY have to let it rip because you can feel like you picked up the pace,  but everyone is so fast that just a little bit is like throwing pennies in a pond.

I still had a blast and this was going to be one and done for me, but my kids and wife are already tryin to talk me into next year.  🤣

Dude I did a couple qualifiers this spring, I didn’t have a good day at either one, didn’t ride to my potential and had weirdo mechanical issues the one day on top of it. I was in the same classes as you. I also rode 250 and 450b so practice at the one, and good god, that class was all aliens. They were absurdly fast.

But with that said, just the first step at the qualifiers was insane! To make it through that, and through the regionals is, legit.

To make it there and do all the laps, IS an accomplishment. But you’re right to want to do better next time, it’s what got you there regardless.

You killed it man, I’m hoping I can really step it up to make it where you did.

I gotta find like 20% speed though as the regionals must be fast fast. If I was borderline on making it from the qualifier gotta make some serious gains for the regional…

My cousin Nolan Ford won 85 limited with a 1-1-4. He won it last year also. KTM orange brigade rider.
