1999: upon returning from his MXdN success McFarlane chose not to rest. Instead he headed for Phillip Island and the 1999 Australian Motorcycle Grand Prix to be a part of the FMX exhibition. Sharky was an all-rounder on a MX bike and a class act off it.

1999 saw Sharky win the Australian 250 MX Championship, finish 3rd in the 250 SX and lead his country to an 8th place finish at the MXdN.

Little did we know it was only a sign of things to come...

Another ADB cover, May 2000, leading the world at the Broadford round of the World Championships. In a strange twist of fate, the Broadford track would be the sight of one of his best MX performances and also the same track that would cruelly claim his life 10 years later...

Sharky and Burner after stunning the world, holeshotting the first race with a 1-2 start on their 500 2 strokes, then finishing 3rd and 4th in moto 1 behind Smets and Marnicq Bervoets. Remember this was in 2000 when most of the front runners on the GP circuit like Smets and Bartolini were dominating on their "new age" 4 strokes. Burner rode a near stock CR500 that day...

No problem collis.

A lot of people outside of Australia probably wouldn't have seen a lot of these shots from earlier in his career so I thought it was the least I could do to show the rest of the world.

It is truly remarkable what he achieved in his career. He surely will be missed....

And as you say, there are probably not many outside Aussie who has seen those (I have a vague memory of seeing the race on TV and seeing pics in mags).
