If the 250 nat champ is a two or three digit guy the only number available is 4 maybe 6?And with Reed not opting for a one digit number theres none. They have to repeal this rule.

We could only hope for them to have to earn their number again.

All the numbers through 100 had to be earned the old way.

As it should be today. I understand a rider wanting to keep a certain # for marketing reasons but it is misleading to the casual observer and if they want the casual observer to "get it" which based on the commentary by Sheheen and Emig they do, then they should go back to the old way. You run the following year what you earned the previous year. If you were 5th overall in 2010 then you should be #5 in 2011. But what the fark do I know.

The problem when they came up with this "semi-permanent" idea was that they didn't factor in the length of time that the number would be properly held.

Nascar numbers are owned by the team instead of the driver and yes the system worked better there.

Look at how many of these "permanent" numbers have already been given up because they no longer participate. That in itself defeats the purpose of a permanent number system.

#4 becomes available in 2012 doesn't it?

It will be wierd to see someone other than RC running the #4.

Assuming RC doesn't come back and thump some people to get some points to keep it.

Wow, bad news for Stewart. I was going through the numbers in my head and didn't immediately remember who had #7. That dude needs to get racing again.

Brown earned points in 2009 so he holds it for 2 years after and he will probably run a select few races each year to try and keep it.............so it is NOT available now........

Just think with the old system Stewart would probaly not have enough points for a double digit number next year!!!!

Yep, let him come back like Hannah with a 3 digit number.

They could offer fractional top-10 numbers, like 2.3, 7.9, etc. Wink

Maybe a fair number system would get more parity among the riders. Better racing, cause they would be trying to get that next lower digit too.

I'd like to see him come back with the 259 and ride like he did when he ran that number

Or letters, like 7X or something. Like jake wiemer could be 12W or something.

Hope Canard gets #4.

Realistically though, they won't need another number until 2012 since there is #6 is available. If someone other than CP377 wins the outdoors, he will get #6. If CP wins, he will likely stay with 377 into the 450s.

The whole marketing thing is kind of a farse IMHO, how many guys are making much dough because of their number? With all the talk of wanting the sport to be bigger, more mainstream, etc. the old numbering system made it very obvious to the casual fan/newcomer who is who in the pecking order out there on the track.
