Again, I don't work in homelessness so please excuse any of the questions I answer vaguely as I don't like to muddle things I don't have exact information on. I'd suggest my wife come on here to answer all your guys questions but I wouldn't let her come within 10 miles of this place.

The number of homeless is without a doubt worse, but the approaches in dealing with them are improving without a doubt and someone else pointed that out previously in this thread. There's a light at the end of the tunnel!
Also, as someone who's surrounded by people that have many hours of "experience", how much money is the appropriate amount per person to spend? 5,000 dollars, 10,000 dollars, 100,000 dollars?
Unfortunately, I don't know what a hard figure would be in terms of the average it takes to take someone from unhoused to housed. I'd imagine it varies greatly because each case is so different. It's not like prison where it costs $X/day to house a prisoner. Sorry if that response is unsatisfying.

The thing is they have to want help, and a big percentage are not right mentally and or addicted to drugs and don't want to change.
The amount of people who are homeless and addicted to drugs might be less than you all think and if you talk to most drug users, the real hardcore drug users, they want to change... but they're, you guessed it, addicted.

Tell you what you go put in 40-50 plus hours a week to live in a nice neighborhood with like minded neighbors and then start having your shit stolen and deal with all the shit that comes from giving these people a free place to stay, while everyone else slaves away.

Again, take a look at the Guaranteed Income Pilot Program. It's been a while since I looked at the numbers but I think nearly half of the people found employment because they had some financial assistance. As far as giving back, I don't know those numbers but I do know that many people in my wife's field end up become coaches to the people who were where they once were.

First this will not get better without MANY people doing something. I know what I do and I'm comfortable with it. That brings up new questions, if you had a budget of $100,000K do you use it to help 100 people minimally, 20 people decently, or 1 person out of the gutter? These are difficult questions that should be talked about. One of my best friends had a drug addict child, they didn't tell the numbers but I know as many times as they put him in a rehab house, I can't imagine they spent les than $100K, in the end the son committed suicide. So we can't just throw all the $$s at the problem because they just aren't there.

That's a better question for a professional. Sorry, I know that is a far from satisfying answer, but I don't have the knowledge on that type of question to give an accurate response. You can easily give one of the places listed way back a few pages ago a call and they'd for sure have an answer to this.

Transitional Housing Programs are doing some great things, and I feel like it would for sure be a smart bet to put $100k directly into those services, but I just don't know enough about the financial side of all of these things to say that is is the best way to use 100k.

Damn I was on a roll on that post ! AK you spent some time dissecting my rant of things that aggravate me, (and most of the people I know who've lived in Ca. long enough to see the negative differences from when we grew up here vs now). A lot of your answers I agree with and some I don't, which is fine ! It's nice to have a constructive conversation in here about what are obvious problems. We all have the same goal, a better world for our kids and grandkids. No one wants to see other people miserable. Tell you one thing, and I guess this makes me a nimby lol. Is that since the rehab house down the street sold and a family moved in. I don't have strangers staring in my front window smoking and leaving their trash and cigarette butts in my yard anymore. Since that went away I now have more compassion and a desire to help the homeless people I do see wandering around town. I don't want people to be living in the streets depressed and or addicted to drugs, I'm willing to help where I can, and I get it's a complex problem with many facets that I won't understand, but being forced to deal with them on the daily living rent free right next door to the place I struggle month to month to keep is frustrating as hell, as you saw by my post. Keep up the fight, and or help your wife keep up the fight lol. I appreciate the efforts, I know your hearts are in the right place. If I had "unlimited funds" to make the world better ? I don't know. But stealing would be a crime, drug addicts would get help, only citizens could vote, borders would be enforced, vets would never pay tax again and get affordable housing and free health care, illegals would be illegal, a 800 sq. ft. shitbox wouldn't be $2,500' a month... The state of Cali spent $24,000,000,000 from 2018-2023 to tackle homelessness and cannot account for it. They did not consistently track whether the money did anything to improve the situation. Unbelievable.
Days after news of the failed audit the city of Santa Monica approved funding for a 122 unit apartment complex. Each unit will only cost $1,000,000. Wild shit man.
Why would the only people that have the ability to fix homelessness want it fixed. There's too much money to be made if it stays a problem. And the way to get more money is to get it right in front of our noses whenever we go into town.
The actual homeless are just pawns for the industry. So sad.

It fairly obvious that our attempts to help homeless are failing worse than the war on drugs. Time to stop enabling folks to be homeless and fix it in 3 simple steps.
1. Build a big ass facility somewhere far far away from cities - like the Salton Sea. The facility has drug rehab, psychiatric help, work training…programs that actually rehabilitate people. Give them jobs in the facility- cooking, cleaning, landscape…make it self sustaining as possible.
2. Zero tolerance for sleeping on the streets. You sleep on the streets and your shit gets immediately confiscated and you are offered a nice bus ride to the facility. Not forced to take the bus but their shit is impounded.
3. Charities are not allowed to feed homeless unless they have shelter for them. Donations can go to benefit the facility. Again, don’t enable people to live on the streets - just like when I go to a national park and it says “don’t feed the animals”. Feeding the animals makes it so they are incapable of surviving on their own.
Of course I am over simplifying this but something along these lines would be far better than what is being done today.
