if you've ever played, you'd know exactly why they are flying off on every other play now days.... if you haven't, it because the chin strap of choice lately offers greater chin protection, but slides off real easily.. much more easily than other brands/types that were popular in the past..... take a big hit, chin strap slides off, helmet goes flying....
I loved wearing the helmet because it was super light! However I did eventually end up breaking it in a crash.
Like i said no clue if its true or not. Hell NASA needs to design some super foam.

It would have to be thin, slick and easy to replace. That new style closed cell rubbery foam would work well also if it was molded to fit over the shell. It could be colored and vented to help satisfy the demand for style.
500 guy is right IMO with the theory that the outer shell is what really causes most of the problem when you hit your head. If any of you ride and crash once in a while and hit your head you will most likely agree that the hard shell transfers a lot of the impact to your head and the inner linings do little to stop the types of injuries that we see riders like Broc Hepler getting. You need the inner layers and hard shell to help with catastrophic injuries but the conclusions we all get from time to time are just as important to address.
In my opinion any modification would have to be done internally. There is not a material that I know of that could provide adequate impact or abrasion resistance, particularly in a thickness to be beneficial or ecomonicaly prudent. The deterioration initiated by U.V rays alone would jeopardise the majority of materials.
I think the combination of what is currently being used and inflatable air bladders is what would work best. Reusable, light weight, and custom form fitting.

There still needs to be the current protection but something like airbags, etc. throughout helmet as well to absorb impact better.
