There has to be something done with the current health care system but I sure don't have an answer.

Anyway had a bowel blockage, surgeon had to go in twice then in the bed getting flushed with antibiotics for 27 days total stay. Let me tell ya nobody should have to go through this, it about broke me mentally since the 1st 20 days or so I couldn't get more than 1 1/2 hours sleep a night.

Long story short $375,700.00!!

But hey it's better than Jenny Craig 30lbs in 27 days ain't bad huh?LOL

Glad to hear you got roto rootered and are back with the living, but damn 376K?

A running buddy of mine (65 years old) was hit by a car when he was like 5 years old and one of his legs was pretty mangeled. Even today as an old man his leg is almost covered in scar tissue. This happened in Long Beach CA in I think he said 1949. He spent 6 days in the hospital, much of it in intensive care. Now I realize that times and wages etc change but this is pretty interesting. His total bill was under $600. He said he's still got the hospital receipt somewhere and was gonna dig it up to show me the break down of services. He said that they gave him morphine injections and they were billed at $0.20 an injection.

My father has his first paystub from when he was a physician at a hospital in Baltimore in 1955. It was $75 for a week's pay.

With all due respect, Mike...

It's not the health care system that's in trouble.

It's us!

Glad you are OK now, except for the 375k part. Blink

In Canada, that would have cost you a lot less.......$375,700 less.

For others who may have had something similiar happen earlier in life. When I was about 22 or so I had a bad car accident where a "blue hair" here in Florida tried to kill me by T- boning my Ford Ranger. Broke a bunch of ribs which in turn pitch forked into my belly. My intestines are full of scar tissue and lesions from that accident, through the years the scar tissue and that never quit growing. This is what caused the blockages, so anyone who's had trauma to their belly maybe some 20 years ago or so be mindful of what can happen.

Had one of my Dad's friends tell me a friend of his died after 3 days of having same kind of blockages "he was at a different hospital" just down the road from where I was.

Oh forgot to mention so far as I can tell from the billing, I'm responsible for $400.

Now if my dumb ass would have had Aflac or something similiar I wouldn't have lost a months wages!! My work wouldn't let me use sick days or vacation days towards my missed time, that pissed me off but hey still got a job.

I have seen a blockages kill in a family member and in the hospital setting. If your bowels aren't moving it is nothing to sneeze at and get help sooner rather than later. TIME IS OF THE ESSENCE. If you wait and it ruptures mortality rates skyrocket. It's not a good death. Trust me. Public Service Announcement over. Just throwing it out there, not preaching at you Dad.

I'm glad you acted when you did. It sounds like you received good care and am glad you're OK at this point. I'm also glad it looks as if your insurance is going to cover the vast majority of the bill.

Good luck in your recovery. Take care man.

I read something just yesterday about people over 50 and retirement savings. I "think" it said that something like 25% had less than 10k saved and 50 some % had less than 35k saved. This was not counting assets like homes etc.

Dude let me tell ya, after my 2nd surgery I had 10 days of total silence down there. Did the Mag flush plus every other idea the crew of doctors (5) and nurses could come up with. The bill says over 100 bags of IV's/ antibiotics were run through me.

It was scarey, my 12 year old just got his cast off the 1st week I went in and I could see he wanted me to get off my ass in that hospital bed . So he could get back to training and riding. And after that 2nd surgery I didn't know what the hell was going to happen.

Any of you guys in your 40's (me 45) don't think the world can't change in a heartbeat, have your stuff together and be prepared.

Glad you're okay.

And you've got to be loving your insurance right now? right?

So you got world class, life saving, "care" for 27 days, and it cost you $400 plus the cost of premiums....that doesn't seem like such a bad deal to me?

I acknowledge that there are flaws in our health insurance industry here in America...

But the government mandating coverage, and eliminating pre-existing conditions and max insurance pay outs, isn't the answer.

The main problem isn't insurance. It's the cost of the medical care in general.

To many people making their beans (big beans at that) in the medical industry, but all people are worried about is the insurance industry.

All that money that the medical industry is spending lobbying in Washington appears to be money well spent.

Seems they are missing the target, no?

Yes they are missing the target.

The medical lobby is the most powerful lobby in the United States. The are the one's calling the shots with this new health care bill.

I guess you're with me then...when the government is saying they need to reform health CARE, they should focus on the CARE and not try and fix CARE by medling with INSURANCE.

This is not how I feel about healthcare and people but it's still kinda funny....I was raised mostly on a poor as dirt Oklahoma farm and my uncle used to say this to any/every sick animal he had..."If you don't get better soon, yer gonna die". When my wife says she needs to go see the doctor, I tell her she has "exceeded her lifetime maximum benefit". The truth is, I'm probably a socialist...if there is a medicine or medical proceedure that will heal/cure a person, then it should be used on EVERYONE, regardless of cost.

First off, sorry to hear about the bowel issues. Been there. Not fun stuff.

The big thing. Not defending the messed up system that is health care by any stretch. But, you don't really think your insurance company will really pay that bill do you? What hospitals, doctors, etc charge, and what insurance companies actually pay out are very different things.

Keep in mind, I've literally spent well over a million in medical care between surgery's, ICU stays, inpatient care, etc.

$376K for 27 days.......sounds about right.

My son was in the ER for one day and had some tests and office visits when he broke his back and that came to just about $14K.

$376,000 / 27 = $13,925.00

Glad you are OK man and you are absolutely right about how quickly things can turn on you in life.

Considering you can buy an x-ray machine for 6-7 thousand that's pretty steep.
