I don’t understand why they haven’t implemented helmet radio’s for the pro rider yet? It’s gotta be safer instead of trying to read a pit board while in the heat of battle. I think they should just allow their mechanic to speak to them maybe once or twice a lap or just let them speak to their rider like they do in f1. It would also add more for the fans if they could listen in also, it would be more of an incentive to pay for the season pass I know I would. I just think it elevate our sport also. What do you guys think?
Webb was asked about radios post race and IIRC he said it would be way too distracting.
I’d prob wanna rip my helmet off if my mechanic was trying to play back seat driver into my ear while I’m racing
Interesting.
They tried it in the past and then it got banned. It would be a game changer for the sport and I hope they don't allow them.
I do love having my own when on the trials though, total game changer in Baja when exploring. I bought the cheap ones and they work great, battery life all day long, hands free of course.
I didn't know it was tried before, good to know.
I think that it would kill the essence of our sport because every move or position on the track would be more "calculated" from the pits. We have plenty of examples from other motorsports.
It will hurt more to MX SX because when you have so many variables (points in 2 motos for overall), track changes (new rhythm in a SX section) and/or weather related situations.

Not just radio, I want a live GoPro feed as well as sound and radio communications...
The next generation will get their media through VR type head sets, and SX/MX racing is perfect sport for that technology. Who wouldn't want to put on a head set and see and hear exactly what their favorite rider during a race?
What if the radio could only be used during a certain part of the track like a pit board?
That would prevent the constant talking and allow more info to be given than is right now on a pit board.
I image riders would quickly set boundaries with their spotter, eliminating this issue, while still being able to receive safety related information in real time.
I wish we could get the gopro feed on the broadcast, that would be amazing. But it wouldn't happen because too many cuss words and incidents like that.
That would be tough to monitor and control. I see that it could be useful for safety, but part of what Champions are made of is the ability to constantly change and pick the right line choice as the track deteriorates. I would like to keep it that way, along with avoiding all the other changes that would come with allowing radios.
I see the benefits of wanting to "be with" or "ride with" your favorite riders in the future but it would be a lot to monitor for the AMA and it would just change the whole dynamic of the sport. Riders would no longer need to figure shit out on their own and they would know what's going on behind them. They could be told immediately when to back it down or when to pick it up, which lines to take, who's behind them and which lines they are taking, etc. "Eli, bunch 'em up, Reed is coming!"
Like RJ said about it when Kawi was using them:
Honda’s Rick Johnson saying of his title rival Ward, “When he’s got that radio in his helmet, he’s kind of got eyes in the back of his head. He wasn’t cutting me off or anything, but he kind of just knew if I took different lines.”

I think at the minimum the AMA should be able to get in the riders ear for *emergencies only*. Example: "Red Cross flag in [track section], wheels on the ground." Or a red flag: "RED FLAG, reduce speed and return to starting area."
I like where you're going with this. What if instead of an audio cue, they used a visual alert system. They could put these markers at various points around the track so they'd be right in the riders' line of sight no matter where they're at. It's a crazy idea, I know, but what if they even had people in charge of them and they just used different colored flags for different kinds of track situations? It would flow right along with the "red flag", "red-cross flag" symbolism. Or is that too on the nose?
They already have lights placed around the track in rhythm sections that flash yellow for caution and red for wheels on the ground.
Not sure what you're trying to say here....
Short track racing has used one way communication for years (look up Raceivers). Ditto on the others who have pointed out the safety benefit aspect of it - I don’t know that I like the mechanic/team communication side, but there is a big value in being able to communicate to riders any safety/track concerns versus relying on a dude with a flag.
if there’s radio communication in fighter jets, and F1 cars, how could they not be in Moto……
No one is saying the mechanic has to talk nonstop, but just a quick blip of a laptime or “Go for #7 for overal”
how many times have riders finished and didn’t know what place they were in, didn’t know who they needed to pass for overalls, etc.
I like the idea for safety only (medical flag, etc...), but having a little background in 2-way radio communications, I think this could bring a host of headaches as well as create an unfair advantage to certain riders over others.
