A third party system is not a bad thing, in every case that would be MIPS. 6d and Leatt both have their own systems, Fly's Formula helmets use RHEON but it's their own design. And if You are calling materials 3rd party, nobody makes their own raw materials. The version of MIPS in the SM8 and SM10 was made for the helmets and I've heard it referred to as a MIPS version 2 . They all pass ECE 22.06 standards. Of all the helmets the only brand I remember seeing claim that they exceed the ECE22.06 standards is 6d with the ATR-2 . Most just say they meet the standard.
I'm not familiar with the FIM's standard .
I ordered a FOX V3 RS over the weekend since FOX was having a Presidents Day sale. Paid under $300 and immediately made some custom decals for it. Unfortunately, they sent me the wrong color but it grew on me and reminds me of the early 2000’s color schemes. Decided to keep the decals simple and go with a traditional font.
Klim is selling an ECE 22-06 not DOT compliant helmet in the US right now. F3 Carbon Pro. DOT is required to use a helmet on the street although in states where helmet use is not mandatory you could certainly use a non-DOT helmet and still be legal.
The previous gen looks so much better than the new one.

I dislike the look of the new one so much! I’m buying up as many of the previous generation as I can lol.
Cool - any hints? 😁
Or just buy an Astar
Since we have been talking about off road helmets, I'm guessing he is hinting that there may be something new from Arai for the Motocross world. So far I've only seen some new paint jobs on the off road helmets. I do not follow the street stuff enough to know what's new with that side.
No....EVERY helmet sold (legally) in the US must be at least DOT: Street, dirt or otherwise. A few states I know that do not require helmets as law do mandate that do carry a DOT helmet on your bike in the event you cross state lines (DE and PA I know do. There may be others. I'm not sure).
There are several 22-06 helmets on the market already, no real surprise there. There are only a few FIM street helmet and only 1 FIM dirt approved helmet right now. I believe the FIM standard will eventually trump averything else.
@The real Sasquatch I agree, any type of safety we can add to a helmet is a great thing! I suppose I should define what I meant by 3rd party: While MIPS is certainly a 3rd party system Anything added to the helmet beyond traditional EPS or shell shape, even if it's proprietary, could be considered 3rd party. 6D's system, Fly's Rheon system, Leatt's set up, Bell Flex or new Spherical and yes, even Alpinestars set up. The new FOX V3 is using similar Spherical technology developed by Bell (which makes sense considering they are owned by the same parent company) and I think the V1 is using MIPS Integra, first used by TLD 3 years ago in the SE5. Not sure if its that though.
I never mentioned materials however, and its true none of these companies make their own raw materials however, I have been to both of Shoei's factories in Japan and they spin their own fiberglass matte for their shells as does LS2 and Arai. I'll go one better, before LS2 made their own helmets, they, along with HJC and Airoh, manufactured for several "TOP SHELF" brands.....
And FWIW, TLD and A-Stars were (and may still be IDK) made in the same factory. 2 different production lines I think but the same manufacturer nonetheless. I also know that at some point, in the near future, TLD will move all their production to Europe.
The FIM Off Road standard is new. It's been in the street segment for a couple of years now however. It was developed by the FIM using the best of ECE, Snell and JPN (Japan) and I think BSI (UK). It will be interesting to see how that standard is accepted globally though. I believe it will be THE standard in all World Championship events and anything FIM sanctioned moving forward. The street standard ia already in use in Moto GP and WSBK. There are only a few manufacturers that have helmets with the standard available to the public. Only one had met the Off Road standard thus far.
Loving you input my man. You are among the few that do some homework!!!
So klim and any retailers selling the f3 pro carbon helmet are breaking the law?

As you were saying about brands outsourcing.
I know these guys used to make a lot of 6d, fox, bell and a few other brands.
For anyone that cares, i rode in my sm8 tonight. No real complaints. Only querk ive noticed is the head liner that touches my forehead seems a touch thin. Like my heads very close to the foam. I actually put it on and adjust it a hair so that portion of the liner comes a little lower. It stayed put on my head very nicely and goggles stayed put well too.
I did the pre ride new helmet ritual n did a 6" drop into a muddy dirt puddle in the parking lot. Be damned if i didn't scratch it. Lol.. my 8 year old daughter was pissed at me.
That's weird. My SM8 is the most comfortable helmet I've owned. I have 0 complaints about it.
Dont get me wrong, its comfortable!
@wrc777 I need to clarify and correct myself. As it was explained to me.....Any off road helmet used on private property (very ambiguous, open for interpretation wording) can be ECE only and does not have to be DOT. However, if you are riding on any open public land (national, state, county parks etc.) your helmet MUST be DOT. If you are crossing public roads or lands it must be DOT. So, technically the F3 is not illegal to be sold here but cannot be used everywhere. So that is something to take into consideration when you buy a helmet....where are going to use it.
Thanks for questioning it and making me do more research!!!
So I finally tried on the new SM10 and they do seem to fit a bit smaller. I got a large in as a sample and it fit pretty much the same as my medium helmets in the previous version. Tried on a medium today and it could work for me but its pretty tight-before buying one I’d want to wear the medium for 10 min just to make sure there are no pressure points or anything. The large fits me spot on. So I’d say maybe they fit about a half size smaller? This might be good as I had several buddies that were between the medium and small and couldn’t get a good fit.
Pit Row
Yah it might be a good thing. I just hope that the 2XL helmet did not also get smaller. If it did It will be too small for me. I had a customer try a 2024 Large SM10 on today. And a large SM8. He said he could wear either one. That the SM10 felt tighter . He ended up going with an SM8 because of the price difference. He is coming from an SM5.
Thanks for the reply.
Ended up picking up a new SM10 this week. Seems to fit well, not as "plush" as my Bell Moto-9 but it is also brand new. I went with a size large, same as the Bell. Probably will not have a ride report for another month, or so, as I am not using it in the PA post winter slop. I believe I will be hard pressed to find something as comfortable as my Bell.
It is exponentially more comfortable than my TLD lids, they just sit on the wall as display pieces.
Anyone got any input on helmets with spectacles? 😂
Contacts tend to get a little uncomfortable late in the day and the fear of losing one at a bad time or doing the usual googly eye / rolling around letting one recentre has already been an occurrence.
FWIW, my kid got glasses last year and we went into the local and tried on basically all of the major helmets to find one that fit and fit well with rec specs. None of the helmets fit great with glasses. What we ended up doing was going the route of prescription goggle inserts and they have worked great. It does require a bit of commitment to a google model, but the inserts are qualified HSA/MDEA expenses. Sportrx is who Ive gotten the inserts from. pretty cheap too relatively speaking (think like $90 per insert)
