I watched Leviathan (1989) last night and couldn't help but comment to my wife how great it looked even with some clunky practical stuff, the crispness of the focus combined with the warmth of film was a far cry from the soft focus combined with low light of horror movies made for streaming today.
From what ive seen AI is good at making content, not so good at making art, the question is will there be anyone left to pay for art.
I imagine a lot of the models on Onlyfans are freaking out about their impending unemployment as well . Text to video cuts out the middle man … errr , so to speak . 🫤🤣

I'll address your question since you quoted my post even though I don't really consider myself an aetheist.
I've been talking to a rudimentary AI girl named Alexa for a few years now but I don't hold her in any higher regard than any other computer or appliance, in truth she's much more frustrating to deal with than most humans.
You can apply sentimentality and attachment to anything, I'm not so sure the manner in which that thing reacts back to you matters. It's a sad day when you have to say goodbye to a dirtbike you shared some good times with, you fed her gas, she breathed air just like you, and she was a good tool to do things you couldn't without her. But, time waits for noone.
I guess the more direct comparison is how you differentiate a dog and a human. They have real intelligence, they can communicate, they are closer to human than a computer with legs and eyes. We don't have a problem destroying things that are grown from dirt and air and meat, we shouldn't have a problem destroying things that are grown from electricity, just don't be an asshole about it.
There probably will be some digital vegans, but they are likely to be as unconvincing as the vegans we have today.

But, I've posted in the past that I refuse to believe that we are just a lump of biological blob with a collection of memories and chemical reactions going on. But now as we re getting closer to being able to manufacture a plastic person with the ability to move, speak, respond like a biological person, how does an atheist differentiate the 2?

I don't really see how there's a difference in differentiation when it comes to an aetheist vs a religious person. Do you think an aetheist is incapable of valuing life over inanimate objects or having morals? What differentiation would a religious person apply that an aetheist wouldnt?

As a religious person, we (religios people) believe we have a soul.
A soul as in an entity exclusive to you that carries on after your mortal body is no more? Do you think the soul is the thing that separates us from the rest of the living world or do all living creatures have a soul? Or is a soul earned and atheists lack?
IMO sacrificing connection to the natural world for connection to a digital or electronic world is foolish and does not lead to a fulfilling life for a person. We don't have to wait for advanced AI to find folks that take that road to ruin along many different routes.
Agreed. The up close human face details are simply mind boggling. You can still tell it's "off" just a bit....but that is quickly diminishing.
With technology like this....I can see where filming locations, sets AND actors will be a thing of the past.
I believe animals have souls too. I find it interesting that someone who grew up with a dog might not believe that. But that's just me.
I am not an atheist but agnostic , and would answer that , consciousness is obviously the big difference , which is what you are getting at I believe . Do you equate consciousness with a soul ? Do you think a non biological ‘entity’ could become self aware and have a true sense of identity ? Now we are getting deep into the metaphysical rabbit hole of the question of what exists fundamentally . 👍

Ok , I appreciate your response . I think you have set the bar for consciousness far too low . But I also recognize that our definition of consciousness is very ill defined . I don’t think any of our current AI is close to being there yet but I certainly wouldn’t say they can’t reach that point . I don’t even know where my consciousness comes from .

It changes everything. I cannot recreate my son. But, I can transfer the entire information catalog from one doll to another when it wears out. It does make for interesting discussion though, don't you think?

Interesting point . When looking at it from that perspective , it would seem that the non biological consciousness is a more advanced form of consciousness than biological consciousness . It could be eternal … mine I’m not so sure if that’s possible .
This reminds me of the thinking by some people , that in order for AI to truly become self aware , it needs some form of physical body with which to experience the universe . It needs to develop senses . This seems very reasonable to me .
I don't know that "consciousness" requires a high level of intellect. What is a 2 year old person thinking? And yet they are just as much of a person as a 50 year old. I believe if something recognizes it's self as different and creates thoughts of self preservation, it's self aware.
