I am replacing the radiator on my 2014 KTM 250 SXF because it was bent since i bought it from the previous owner and i was talking to the garage about it. They told me they won't reinstall the fan if i take it in, just replace the radiator. When i asked why they told me because it's too much work and it's not needed anyway, so it got me wondering. Obviously KTM put that fan there for a reason(?)
The reason i asked them before taking it in is because i need to order the radiators and also the thermal sensor for the fan because the original is embedded inside the radiator and i am not sure if that can be re-used, so i wanted to order the thermal sensor and the radiator and just re-use the fan.
Since these guys won't do it, and because i live in a small island where i don't get to have a lot of professionals working on this kind of bikes, is it something that i can do by myself? Or is it a no-no?
In theory i know how it works and i know how to disassemble the whole thing and put it together again. I have done a lot of work on my bike successfully before but the radiator is something i never took off on this bike, so i am bit scared to do it.
What is your opinion?
Thank you

Hey, Fanis
Just making sure, is it an SXF? Ktm manuals say the sxf doesn’t have a rad fan. My buddies doesn’t either. Maybe it’s an XC? I dunno, just some insight. I would try to hook it back up for slow usage, 1st gear, 2nd gear idle. If you’re racing around 3-4th gear cruising I would say don’t bother. It’s just added weight.
I would keep the fan check out https://extreme-parts.com they have the thermal sensor in a T fitting that goes between the radiator hoses. They might have the whole kit for your bike.
Hey there,
Thanks a lot for the reply!
That's interesting. Mine is 100% SXF but it's the EU version for which KTM has a different manual than the USA version. (Not sure if thats something they don't share or if you guys have the USA version). To be honest i thought all 4 stroke models had one after a certain year or something but i never looked into it.
It has been there since i got the bike but its not connected at all, its not working. I was just thinking it would be wise to do things in the same way KTM did it now that i am changing the plastics and fixing the bike all around. So im not sure if i even should put it back now.

Hook that fan up if you can man, You may not need it if your racing, (you probably are) but if you ever need the bike to do slow, fuel efficient, or putting around you WILL boil the coolant, not a matter of if but when. We have WRs over here and we set the fans up to run 24/7 when the bikes on.
Thanks for the reply!
I think i get it. So instead of the sensor being directly into the radiator i would need to use the T sensor instead say as a hub to connect the hoses on?
Now the way it is all connected, there is a plastic hub that connect the hoses. Is that what the T sensor replaces?
Thank you
Thanks for the advice man, i will definitely try to connect it, its literally there all ready just not connected. I am wondering how i will fit it on the new radiator because i cant find a radiator that has a thermal sensor inside of it like that. So does that mean that i need the T sensor and it goes right where the little plastic is now?
Thank you!
If you can’t find a rad with the sensor mount, you have 2 options, forget it, or make the T joint work, I’ve personally never done either. But my buddies with their 250sxfs do not run fans. Are you racing or putting around? -SPY
Im not racing im just doing trails
If you’re just doing trails, just hook the fan to a switch, and click er on when she’s warmed up. That’s a method I used when I had a RMX I hooked fans to.
It doesn’t replace the plastic hub it would be in between a hose. That sensor on the bottom of the radiator looks like an easy spot for damage.
This might be the best solution because it doesn't involve automatic turn on/off. Thanks for that.
If i do this, do i have it turned on all the time while the bike is running? I guess it won't hurt doing that right?
Thank you so very much for your input, i appreciate it!
Thats what i thought the first time i saw it but i didn't say anything as i guessed the people that did it know better than me. Then i saw other bikes that had the T sensor behind the radiators, i dont know it looked much better than having it stick under the radiator.
We used to flip them on once our WRs reached operating, they will cool down a little. But not much. You can use it 24/7 if you wish. (Hooked to ignition key on WR, probably a real switch for you)
