Had mine done in May.  Getting rid of the sling was like being reborn.  One thing that helped me when I started driving again was getting a steering wheel spinner knob.  Mounted it low as it's not legal here to drive with one.  Simple therapy exercise I did while driving or stopped at light was finger walking up the steering wheel, and eventually the door jam.

When my wife broke her scapula i put one of those spinner knobs on her car. She's never taken it off, she likes it so much. I don't think they are legal in Wa. either but oh well.

Wearing this sling is the worst part. I have to wear it sleeping so, I’ve got the strap digging into my shoulder blade all night on top of, it pulling on my neck. I’m pretty sure this sling is the biggest contributor to my lack of sleep.

I can’t wait for this thing to come off!!

"Strap digging in - pulling on my neck"...Please stop, brings back the nightmares.  Thought the same thing too, how in the hell can't they make these more comfortable?  Particularly neck area.

feeling tip top no more numbness in my left leg (yaaay Ill be able to hocky stop using that leg instead of just turning)  zero pain I cant believe how well recovery is going21B9D03A-3623-49CA-A27C-0713A7D743C1

That’s rough. I’m glad to see you’re finally doing better though.
My sling is all Velcro as well. It also has, webbing in the front of it for a ball. When my arm goes numb, I just squeeze it to get blood flowing.
I don’t mind it during the day. Other than the fact it’s there. I just dread when it’s time to go to sleep cause, that’s when all the misery starts. The last three weeks I’ve had a knot in my scapula, stiffness in my shoulder, elbow and, my neck kills me each morning

Thankfully, I’m getting it off tomorrow. I’ve never hated an inanimate object so much in my life.

I have quit many times.  Once the injuries heal I always change my mind.  I tell everyone to wait till you are healed up before you sell all your stuff.  Things seam different then.

That is the truth.  Mickey Gilley was helping a friend move a couch and mis-stepped, fell down was paralyzed from neck down for a long time and never fully got use of his hands back.   And Mickey LOVED playing piano and was never able to do it again.

Pay attention to the PT - it's critical.    I have this same injury, if there is any upside it was that mine was on my left shoulder.  Complete, massive tear of the rotator cuff.

One thing included in mine was a warning from the surgeon.  " If you do this again we will not be able to repair it, there is nothing left to work with."

Yikes.

hope for 100% recovery Chance1216.

I had a full traumatic tear of the rotator cuff. I imagine same thing. Plus full separation of the superspinautis and, two other tendons. Thanks for the well wishes.

Well, the sling is off. It feels weird to feel so weak. I start physical therapy Monday. 8-12 weeks worth depending on how it goes.

One step at a time.

Preamble: I ate, lived breathed mx from 6 yo to about 50.

Took up vintage mx and did that for years. Depending on how you count them....I have half dozen bikes and projects.

Quit racing about 10 years ago. Club politics and the kind of tracks now.......pin it and pray. Bad things happen at 60 mph and 20 feet in the air. Working at night and Sundays pretty much killed any other interest.

I restore and work on bikes as a hobby now and dream about the way it was........leaned over in the start sweeper at Whitney.....pinned in 5th gear.

Been a few days. I have a question for those of you that have had shoulder repairs done. Since my sling has been off, I still can’t get a decent nights rest. I wake up several times throughout the night in pain. Almost as bad as when I first had the surgery. I’m tired throughout the day, and, just kinda in a fog from the lack of sleep.
Last night I went to bed at 11. I dread trying to sleep because I know the pain is going to come. Yet, I try. I ended up waking up at, 1:30am, 3:15, 5:45, 6:45 7:30. Each time I’m up it’s because of pain. Each time, I’m awake between 15-30 minutes. At 7:30 I finally said, F it and, stayed  awake. Does this sound similar to your experiences? It’s fucking frustrating and, this is 7 weeks post op. I’ll admit, I have a high tolerance for pain and, usually just grit my teeth to get through pain issues. I’m just over this bs.

Any insight appreciated.

My injury was similar to yours however it happened July of 2014.  So, I talked to my wife about you and our current situation, and we discussed the pain, and she confirmed what I remember, I really had no pain after the pump ran out (2 weeks) and I was left with pill form pain relief.  I didn't like the pills, so I stopped taking them.

I did experience a dull, constant pain however it did not keep me from sleeping. I did take Advil during the pain time after the pump was gone.

I did wake often with claustrophobia like feelings (the sling is very confining) and had to get up and go outside and move around to relieve myself of that feeling of being trapped.

One thing I notice with your history that differs from mine is that I was diagnosed and operated on much sooner than you were.  I mean the time from injury to surgery was much shorter in my case -  AND, my sling time was much longer.  I was required to remain in sling at all times except to shower for 90 days, no less.

Everyone is different and I can't answer why you have the pain you do, good question for the doctor, but I did have to learn how to sleep in one position, it was a bitch as I'm a stomach sleeper and do move a lot at night, so I had to learn to sleep with a small prop up behind me and firm pillows on either side to keep from moving too much during the night.

After reading this I don't think I answered your question.    Ha.

3 things I do know,

time will pass and you'll be doing things again.

Shoulders (Rotator in particular) are underappreciated and overlooked when training.  Make them strong people.

Merry Christmas and hang in there.

I’ve had 7 knee surgeries and both hips replaced. Watching what my brother went through with his shoulder surgery I realized those recoveries bring a lot more discomfort than any of mine.  Hang in there, man.  Like the t-shirt says “Scars are tattoos with better stories”.

I’ll be sending off an email and, getting in touch with the Dr. I think part of my problem is, since I’ve had the sling removed, I’ve probably rolled over on my side in my sleep. Trying to get used to sleeping on my back has been nothing short of difficult. The sling kept me from rolling over. Even using pillows, I wake up and, they’re on the ground. So, I might just try putting the sling on at night for a couple days to prevent from rolling over and, see if that helps. I’m not sure but, have a feeling that’s what I’m doing. I normally toss and, turn all night myself.

My wife’s been nothing short of incredible. From helping me shower, cutting my food to, tying my shoe laces. Thankfully, I can do those things myself now. Aside from the rough nights when I wake up in pain the following morning.

Before my injury, I was doing a lot of weight training and, cardio. I was always sure to hit my shoulders and, upper body hard because the work I do requires heavy, overhead lifting.  I can only imagine the shape I’d be in if I wasn’t working out at the time or, didn’t have the job I have.

Merry Christmas to you and, thank you for posting. I appreciate it.

I have plenty of scars lol. All I got this time was eight, 1” scars because the surgery was laparoscopic. I was hoping for one big scar 😂.
No such luck lol.

I’m not familiar with CBD oil. I just did a quick read up on it now. My concern is regarding a positive drug test. Although many manufacturers say their products are THC free, there’s still potential for a positive test. Working construction and, driving a company vehicle, if anything happens, a drug test is mandatory with my company. It’s pretty lame as the relief would be something I could use. Weed is legal here in Washington. Just don’t get hurt on the job 😂.

Makes perfect sense 🙄

I've bought from these people. Some independent testing long ago showed they werent lying about what's in the gummies. They also give you a qr code to scan to see what's in the gummies. You can trust the THC content will be acceptable.

They aren't cheap, and they taste like shit. Had a friend try it the same time I did and we both had the same opinion. Worked great for a bit, after some odd months it was just a waste of money.

Chance you gave me a thumbs up and I didn't even post the link lolol

It just settled me down made me tired so sleep could occur .  During day we balanced it with caffeine and energy products to keep my energy up.  Haven’t used it in over a year .

It’s been awhile since I’ve posted here. Little update. I got my range of motion back after doing physical therapy. We’re working on strength training now. I still have 3 weeks of pt left.

I was finally able to get my sleep schedule under control as of a week ago. A good buddy of mine on here suggested, REM capsules by, Hammer Nutrition. They actually worked. I just had to take 3 pills instead of the recommended 2.  I’ve been going to sleep at about 10 pm and, waking up between 6-7am. I was getting concerned because, I’m possibly returning to work on 3/11. Especially since I couldn’t fall asleep before 2-3am.
The last thing I wanted was to return to work and, not have my sleep issues sorted out.

Since I’ve been at home, I managed to tear my 250 apart and, repurpose it as I mostly ride single track.

Now, I’m working on a 04 CR 125. Decent chassis but, the motor needs to go back into whatever blender it was taken out of. It’s just a spare bike now since, my son quit riding it a few years ago. I won’t bitch about it too much.

Have an awesome weekend everyone.

Well..... I was fully released to full work capacity today. I can return to work starting Monday.
My company has what’s called, Work Steps. It’s basically a third party that physically tests you to make sure a person is able to do the required tasks on site. That should be scheduled for some time next week. I’ll be back to work no later than the 18th.

All I can say is, F*** shoulder injuries. I still have stiffness around my clavicle and, on my shoulder blade. It should get better over the next few months. Though I still have a few months until the actual injury is 100% healed, I’m thankful I have my full range of motion back. I have a long road to getting my strength back but, happy nonetheless.

The four months I was off, I managed to rebuild my 250 and, a 125 from the frame up.  Working on them over the last few months was probably the only thing that’s helped me keep my sanity. I read 7 books as well. The best two are, The Inside Line by Rob Andrews and, Wide Open by McGrath. I would recommend either.

Anyways, thank you guys for all the replies.

I can’t wait for things to start getting back to normal
