Vet rider just turned 60. Coming off 2019 KTM 300SX. Decided to go down the 450 rabbit hole again. Been on KTM for the last 13 years. Always liked KTM but looking for something different. Almost hung up the moto boots after a couple big get offs and a couple weeks in the hospital in the last 2 years. Anyway, got the bug to give moto one more shot and want to go 450. Put money down on a 2024 YZ 450F 50th. Waiting for it to come in. The only other bike I'm considering is the 24' KX 450. The YZ has me concerned regarding set up. Seems like nobody is happy...yet. The KX seems like you can ride it pretty hard considering the reviews.

Any one ride both and have a recommendation?

With that background, 2024 Kawasaki KX450 all the way. It’s the “safest” feeling 450 production bike I’ve ridden to date and best for Vet class racers. So fun, easy to ride, turns with a planted feel: My 66 year old Pops’ didn’t want to give it back! If you’re within that 170-190lb. weight range, it won’t need much till the aftermarket can catch up. However, and if possible, get a second or third air filter with it - They dirty up fast and fresh is always best. Yamaha built a great bike as well, but it’s going to take a little more setup and the engine character is way gnarlier. The app can only detune that feeling so much, and the general riding sensation can still be an acquired taste. Kawi ergos also reign supreme. Either way, glad you’re back and enjoy the ride.

I have a feeling there will be a lot of votes for the KX Smile

If you can, I would hold out for the KTM/HUSKY updates coming in a couple weeks.  Supposedly updates to the frame to make it less rigid.
