Question about GPS lap tracking

I want to start tracking my laptimes and especially splits. I did some research and I am going to purchase a racebox mini and use it with my iphone and either mxbuddy or litpro

I suppose I will need to have a phone with me at all times, because I guess that the racebox transfers data over bluetooth directly to phone and the app. I absolutely do not like having the phone mounted to my handlebar, one crash and the 1k phone is dead. What are the possibilities here?
I could put the phone in waist pouch but then I will not be able to view laptimes or analyze my splits. I do not need/want to see the live timing, I suppose I can hear the app talking to me with laptimes. I thought i could hide the phone in bar pad but it seems it will not fit.
Please somebody with more experience help me with this Smile

I use mxbuddy, I wear my Apple Watch when I ride. I select outdoor cycle as the workout and it tracks everything I need, lap times, segments and heartrate.

No need to have my phone on my person while I ride. It just syncs to my phone when I get back to my truck.

i tried litpro but the monthly subscription felt a little steep, though it did have cool features.

let me know if you have any other questions about my set up

Thanks for your response. The apple watch is listed as having *the worst* gps accuracy of all devices. I would like to have a good accuracy, also I do not like wearing any watches while riding - although could be put on handlebar, right?

Honestly it’s not bad at all as far as gps, but I’m not too worried about it having perfect accuracy. It’s good enough that I don’t have issues. I wasn’t really a fan of wear watches when I ride but I got an elastic wristband and have no issues when riding now. Yeah you probably could put it on your bars but you’d lose the heart rate tracking

Apple Watch ultra is good enough. Had issues with the other ones.

Most watches sample at 1x per second. You need one that does 10+.  There are a few watches that do 10+ from both Garmin and Polar.  I don't know the models off hand.

GoPro cameras starting with the Hero 5, sample GPS at 10+ times per second.  Some do 18, but are being limited in software.

I believe they'll also connect to a heart rate monitor, even the heart rate monitor on a watch, if it supports Bluetooth.

That's what I'm looking at.  GoPro mounted to my helmet for Video and GPS at 10x/sec, plus heart rate from a lower spec Garmin watch that supports Bluetooth (and does not need to support GPS at 10x/second).

but how do you view laptimes? It would be nice to be able to analyze splits on the track. Also I still need to wear the phone, this sucks

I have the race box mini and use litpro to view the laps. No, you don’t need your phone with you at all times. It’s kinda a pain to learn how to use it at first, but now it’s easy to use. I use manual mode to start/stop recording and when you click stop recording it automatically downloads all the data.
