Honestly, I can't remember for sure, I know he raced with it on the zook, but I'm a bit fuzzy on the Honda bit, there were quite a few iterations of that design though.

The attempts aiming at reinventing the fundamental technology of the frames of motor bike seem often likely to fail; it is thus advisable to wonder whether this prototype of factory of Honda, a RC125M 1981, is another example. After all, more than 20 years later, this motor bike is nothing any more but one simple object of curiosity. Nevertheless, when one asks today the quintuple champion of the world Roger DeCoster to announce his experiment with this concept, this one mentions that it functioned in fact very well and claims that it could always be the subject of a future use. This machine, lent by the Honda museum within the framework of the shows of the motor bike which were held in Canada last winter, was one gaining between the hands of Yasuo Tofukuji, victorious of the championship of motocross all categories in Japan in 1981.
Honda holds the rights on this concept, which it baptized suspension before double Pro-Link, but who initially bore the name of his Italian inventor, Valentino Ribi, deceased at the end of 2003. The talents of Ribi extended not only to the design from systems from suspension, but also to the field of medical technology.
DeCoster became acquainted with Ribi in the Sixties, whereas they were both racing driver, then bound of friendship joined together thereafter by their common interests. The system of suspension developped at the point by Ribi regulated the problem resulting from the bending of the fork, which caused a friction or a blocking at the time of the depression of the suspension. At that time, that is to say towards the end of the Seventies, the forks were affected of a deflection coefficient of almost 50 Misters the system of Ribi were composed in the beginning of a tube run out of steel chromium-molybdenum and were put at the test on Suzuki of factory of DeCoster. In order to eliminate the friction effect static afflicting control with the suspension, Ribi designed its fork by articulating rods on each one of its points of anchoring. DeCoster affirms that this adjustment made a marked difference, making it possible to regulate the damping and compression ratio without the effect of friction unforeseeable caused by the movement of the fork. In 1978, DeCoster tested the Ribi suspension at the time of the great prices of France, Italy and Austria, carrying out its best results on the circuit of Sittendorf where it finished in fourth position.
Contrary to the traditional telescopic fork, the geometry of the system conceived by Ribi allows a variable progressiveness of the suspension. As the suspension is compressed, the shock absorbers and the springs work on a variable race, emulating the operation of the linkage of the back system of suspension of the some 20 last years. The advantage of the Ribi concept lies in the fact that at the beginning of depression, the suspension makes it possible to absorb the shocks carefully and that at the end of the depression, the suspension hardens gradually, resistant to re-heeling. At the present time, the traditional forks can reproduce this effect only if they are equipped with coil springs progressive and provided with a device of complex damping for low and high speeds.
Among the characteristics of the traditional fork, let us note that it involves a variation of the geometry of direction in compression or relaxation. With the turning of the Eighties, this characteristic was often regarded as a problem to be solved, although one included/understood, since, that this phenomenon was inherent in the natural behavior of the direction on the motor bikes. At all events, the Ribi system makes it possible to control the degree of variation of the geometry of direction in compression. On this RC125M of Honda, for example, the front l/g shock strut compression transmits a very flexible initial feeling, and a clear difference is felt in the way in which the wheel and the axle move in compression.
DeCoster remembers that the feeling of the adjustment of a Ribi suspension approached that which returns a traditional motor bike. The total weight was comparable and the fork compressed in a familiar way in braking, contrary to the traditional forks provided with springs with variable step. The difference more seizing is indisputably the way in which the nose gear wheel firmly remained planted on the ground on the small irregularities while absorbing the largest shocks, particularly those which were caused by square projections. Then why the motor bikes aren't all equipped with suspensions of the Ribi type? According to DeCoster, one of the principal factors would be the evolution of the environment in motocross, which from the circuits on original ground to the tracks of style supercross more spectacular and liking more the witnesses passed. In order to prevent the re-heeling of the Ribi fork to the landing after great jumps, the damping and compression ratios had to be reinforced so much so that the flexibility of the suspension at the beginning of depression was almost entirely eliminated. The design of the traditional forks also developed so that the friction resulting from the bending of the fork became a controllable factor of the damping which proves extremely useful to ensure a resistance to re-heeling.
The advance of career of DeCoster also changed, even if, after its departure of Suzuki to pass to Honda, it proposed the rights of the design of the Ribi fork to Honda, which bought them to him. DeCoster was withdrawn from the competition little time after, but Honda continued to develop this concept, carrying out at least a test filmed with a motor bike of road.
The first RC125M of Honda equipped with a system before Ribi, or double Pro-Link, like it was famous later on, made its entry in scene with the GP of Japan de Suzuka, in 1980. Honda provided the motor bike with a twin-cylinder of 125 Cm3 for the season 1981, but following a modification of the payments, the manufacturer was constrained to reinstall one-cylinder in the motor bike illustrated here. The prototype of race RC125M combines a machiné aluminium nose gear in way complexes and manufactured at one time when the milling machines ordered by computer did not exist yet. A compound of Showa shock absorbers, to which separate demi-johns of the absorber body are twinned, controls the clearance of the suspension. Each shock absorber is supplied with two springs, of which one, more flexible, absorbs the small shocks at the beginning of depression and the other, more rigid, boxes the largest shocks.
But did the history confine the Ribi system with the statute of museum piece? DeCoster believes that this system can still confer certain advantages to the contemporary pilots enduros. Perhaps we will attend one future era where the motor bikes with two driving wheels could revive well the interest with regard to the system of suspension before improved of Ribi.
