And the pork kabobs and hamburgers!!
And Larry Snow, imo the best announcer of them all
I remember sitting on the starting line next to Johnny just WAITING for Trey to make ONE LAP! We would sit there for sooooo loonnngggg just waiting for him to finish his one lap so that we could go. We never did mind though because he was always such a little trooper and always made that lap no matter how long it took!
I guess it paid off in the end, eh? I remember when your family would come piling in through the gate with a million motorcycles in the trailer. And I remember the first time I saw Trey riding big bikes at Ponca... I hadn't been around the amateur scene in quite a while, and when he went flying by my cousin said something about him.. I said "That is little Trey Canard!!!???" He'd grown up quite a lot since I'd last saw him!
And remember Johnny's Aunt Shelly and his Grandma always worked the gate. They were just the nicest people around.
And remember Rudy Kabobs!
Brandon Lacey, how could I forget him! AND Jacob! Bubba Ellis was super fast on 80s until the night waylen (i dont think I am spelling that right) landed on him over the finish line double, then never saw him again. Coby Sharp could run damn good, Chad Cook, Humphreys, Jim Redwine ALWAYS had the most pristine and tricked out bikes there. There would be wars over who got to buy his bike when the new ones came out. (jim is wounded right now, but doing fine last I heard)
Ruddy and the pork kabob! OMG. you want moto food? marinated pork on a stick, grilled.... heaven!
The tunnel jump, the summer of 99, last tuesday night of July, I follwed Cliff Palmer and Robbie off it. 1 time. I dont know how many times you would see whoever was flagging the finish line go running for cover when someone would squirrel over the tunnel jump. It happened more than once.

Homer always had bad ass helmets too. That's about all I remember of that guy.
Marcos older brother raced for factory Honda ATVs and was a normal sized guy.
Marcos family owns Bakers Automotive in OKC his dad normally goes to one of the Anaheim supercross races each year.
The Homer Story... I ran into him one weekend at the airport and was getting ready for a flight and he came into the jetcenter so I had time and asked him about it because I'd always heard the rumors.
Well, he was at the Charlotte SX one year, I can't remember but it was between 94-96... anyhow, he didn't make the night show and he wanted to leave to get on the road back to Oklahoma. Well he wanted to leave, but the pits were locked up and for whatever reason they weren't letting inbody in or out until the program was over and everyone left at the same time. Well if you know Homer or anything about Homer or have heard any of the rumors about Homer and how Homer is, you'll understand when I say that you don't tell Homer Woolslayer what to do concerning ANYTHING...this is after all the guy who punched out his mailman for walking through Homer's lawn after Homer told him not to despite the mailbox being on his porch...
SO anyhow, Homer wants to leave but the gates to the pits are locked and they told him he would have to wait until the night show was over. Homer says OK, backs up his boxvan about a hundred or so yards and then FLOORS it! Drives straiht through the gate at top speed.
Needless to say, the AMA didn't like that too much and banned Homer for good. He'd had quite a lot of run-ins with them already, so this was the final straw.
Straight from the horse's mouth, and Homer has done so much dumb crap that he has no need to lie.
Sometime later I'll tell you about some of the stuff he has done at Riverside Airport in Tulsa and why they banned him there for a while too... another day.
I was there the night that Waylon landed on (took out IMO) Bubba. I cant remember if I heard it myself or someone told me second hand that Waylon told him that he would do it again next time Bubba tried to beat him.
I was also there the night Homer hit the flaggers box after the tunnel double. Wood went flying. Amazingly he jumped back up and started trying to start the bike- despite the fact the radiator was torn off the left side of the bike. He threw it down and his mechanic went and got it.
Another thing about Homer. The mailman story is probably true. My old buddy Kevin Ford was over at Homers house in Stillwater and they were in the garage. The mailman started walking thru the grass and Homer yelled at him, something like "I thought I told you not to walk on my grass!? Next time you walk thru my yard I'm kicking your ass!" So maybe the guy didnt learn. Isnt beating a mailmans ass a federal offense?
If anyone has ever heard of the "spleen jump" at the 500 in Stillwater- that was named after Homer because he cased it and tumbled to the bottom. Almost died. He had to get flown out of there and had his spleen removed. It's the jump in Steel Roots the McGrath does the fat nac nac off into the valley. (I think they refer to it as "Cooperland" but its probably 8-10 miles from Cooperland.
Man, Homer is a character. He was flying in the traffic pattern at Riverside one afternoon. For those of you who don't know, Riverside Oklahoma is in the Top 10 busiest General Aviation airports in the United States with about 1,500 take-offs and landings each day. Well, the control tower said something to Homer that he didn't like or maybe they denied one of his requests. Well he says Fuck You and shuts off his radio and does what he wants! BIG NO-NO!
But yeah the spleen jump was named after him!!! Man i loved the Stillwater 500!

im sure every track has stories and memories, but just the sheer amount of races held at 59th makes it legendary and I fondly look back at them.
I don't know what Marco is doing now, but like Danger said his Father owns American Transmission Shop in OKC. Greg (as danger mention rode ATVs for Honda) Own's a custom Harley Shop Called R & B Cycles. The last time I heard the oldest brother Max Jr. was doing a little music promoting and also owned a club on in south OKC.
Pit Row
I ran into Mr Redwine last year at the Houston Supercross. We were on the same flight.
There was some kid there named Jacob though.
Either way, that jump was pretty gnarly.
You all keep on makin us old washed up riders feel good!!
Peace out and if anyone ever needs a health club in Oklahoma City hit me up I have six 24/7 fitness centers called Shape Fitness..............www.shapefitnessokc.com
There was the rider of Eric (last name ?) who rode a CR 125 and his dad pulled a gun on another rider's father.
I never witnessed this but I was told that Guy Cooper used to light up between motos.
Another fast rider that hasn't been mentioned was Tommy Newman Jr. He could fly on the minis and even had a couple of top 3 finishes at Ponca in I think 83 or 84. For which if people don't know the early 80's is considered the hallmark of the minis. Great riders everywhere. Too bad Newman Jr. really didn't take MX serious.
Bruce O'Hagan killed the 80 Sr. class for a couple of years. Wondered why he never rode Ponca or LL's. H/e I do remember when Jeff Emig started coming down regularly that he wouldn't show up. I guess when they pulled up and saw Emig's Factory Kaw. box van they would just turn around and go home. I guess he couldn't stand losing.
Could go on forever about that place. Also, I would of liked to been around Saddleback in the 70's and 80's. Bet there r some whoppers coming out of there.
There were 13 in attendence on this day in Duncan, OK at the home of Randy Russell who graciously hosted the gathering. Also in attendance were Mark Russell, Trey Jorski, Chuck Cooper, Mike Patterson, Clarence Fortney, Doug Nelson, Lee Anderson, David Fultz, Dennis Morris, Curtis Ross and Mike Steil.
Stories are just stories until you hear it from the horses mouth and this fast group had some great memories and experiences to tell.
Clarence Fortney's mom had saved all the old liturature from back in the day for us to look through. From Southwest Cycle News to Oklahoma Cycle News we all scanned the articles that brought back memories and story's never told till now. LOL
We look forward to the next gathering and want to get more riders involved.
We have a Facebook group page for those who would like to join and share. Just seach for the group Oklahoma Motocross: The Glory Days. Hope to see you there!!!
