There was a little 3 year old on a 1976 8" wheel Italjet in about 1994 that turned in to a pretty good pro, too. I think Aaron's proudest accomplishment as a kid was winning the summer series--he got a really cool sweater jacket.

And the pork kabobs and hamburgers!!

And Larry Snow, imo the best announcer of them all

Miss Canard, I was just about to post the same thing!!!

I remember sitting on the starting line next to Johnny just WAITING for Trey to make ONE LAP! We would sit there for sooooo loonnngggg just waiting for him to finish his one lap so that we could go. We never did mind though because he was always such a little trooper and always made that lap no matter how long it took!

I guess it paid off in the end, eh? I remember when your family would come piling in through the gate with a million motorcycles in the trailer. And I remember the first time I saw Trey riding big bikes at Ponca... I hadn't been around the amateur scene in quite a while, and when he went flying by my cousin said something about him.. I said "That is little Trey Canard!!!???" He'd grown up quite a lot since I'd last saw him!

And remember Johnny's Aunt Shelly and his Grandma always worked the gate. They were just the nicest people around.

And remember Rudy Kabobs!

REDWINE (Oh Mr. Redwine was the EPITOME of the love one has for the pureness of motorcycle racing!)... I remember how the announcer always called him Mr. Redwine even though we all new what his first name was all of us kids called him Mr. Redwine, Jacob Martin (Who's dad posts on here as JMAR) and man I'm sure more will come back to me in a while.

Remember when Homer jumped into the scoring tower from the tunnel jump? Lat time I saw him at the airport I asked him about that... said it was terrifying... also asked him about being banned from AMA SX for life. A good story for a later date.
ohhh you cant do that to us/me, Homer got banned? Give!

Brandon Lacey, how could I forget him! AND Jacob! Bubba Ellis was super fast on 80s until the night waylen (i dont think I am spelling that right) landed on him over the finish line double, then never saw him again. Coby Sharp could run damn good, Chad Cook, Humphreys, Jim Redwine ALWAYS had the most pristine and tricked out bikes there. There would be wars over who got to buy his bike when the new ones came out. (jim is wounded right now, but doing fine last I heard)

Ruddy and the pork kabob! OMG. you want moto food? marinated pork on a stick, grilled.... heaven!

The tunnel jump, the summer of 99, last tuesday night of July, I follwed Cliff Palmer and Robbie off it. 1 time. I dont know how many times you would see whoever was flagging the finish line go running for cover when someone would squirrel over the tunnel jump. It happened more than once.

Homer got banned from AMA SX for driving his box van through a chain link fence at the Dallas SX if I remember right.

Homer always had bad ass helmets too. That's about all I remember of that guy.

i raced with that "Mr. Redwine" guy a lot in Oklahoma when i lived there in 84-85. and "Mr. Reynard" and "Mr. Thomas". we raced Interstate on Wednesday nights with no lights--done by 9pm. then Lawton on Friday night, 59th on Saturday night, then back to Interstate on Sunday for racing or practice. rarely went anywhere else. i ran into Mr. Redwine at the Vet World last month. he still goes fast and he won the +70 class. he's #6 in the pic. his son Scott rode in the +50 class. Trey Jorski was there and crashed out. he still has only one speed--balls out. and i do remember Marco Baker, but i was living in Texas by then. he was a big boy that hauled ass on a 500.

I raced with Marco at 59th he was defiantly one of the biggest guys that i have raced with his dad used automobile springs for his rear shock to support his weight. Back in his younger days when he was racing he was a part time bouncer at the local clubs.

Marcos older brother raced for factory Honda ATVs and was a normal sized guy.

Marcos family owns Bakers Automotive in OKC his dad normally goes to one of the Anaheim supercross races each year.

I also remember Denny Howard. One of the most intimidating Guys in OK. Put you on the ground without a second thought. Now I hear he is a Preacher. How things change.

59th was the best! When I was a kid, I remember Jeff and Bryan Emig showing up on a regular basis. The 60/80 class was always stacked, and the pro classes were ridiculous. I witnessed some great battles between Clay Hoenshell, Trey Jorski, Guy Cooper, Dennis Daft, and Chan Baker. Too bad it's gone ... I have a lot of fond memories of that place.

Hey is this Eddy Adair? If so this is JW Patton
No ... My name is Eddy Cumins. I raced in Oklahoma from 80-85.

DUDE COLBY SHARP!!!! I remember that curly haired dick. Never did seem very friendly, but he sure cure ride that RM!!! I remember the sound those RM80s always made!

The Homer Story... I ran into him one weekend at the airport and was getting ready for a flight and he came into the jetcenter so I had time and asked him about it because I'd always heard the rumors.

Well, he was at the Charlotte SX one year, I can't remember but it was between 94-96... anyhow, he didn't make the night show and he wanted to leave to get on the road back to Oklahoma. Well he wanted to leave, but the pits were locked up and for whatever reason they weren't letting inbody in or out until the program was over and everyone left at the same time. Well if you know Homer or anything about Homer or have heard any of the rumors about Homer and how Homer is, you'll understand when I say that you don't tell Homer Woolslayer what to do concerning ANYTHING...this is after all the guy who punched out his mailman for walking through Homer's lawn after Homer told him not to despite the mailbox being on his porch...

SO anyhow, Homer wants to leave but the gates to the pits are locked and they told him he would have to wait until the night show was over. Homer says OK, backs up his boxvan about a hundred or so yards and then FLOORS it! Drives straiht through the gate at top speed.

Needless to say, the AMA didn't like that too much and banned Homer for good. He'd had quite a lot of run-ins with them already, so this was the final straw.

Straight from the horse's mouth, and Homer has done so much dumb crap that he has no need to lie.

Sometime later I'll tell you about some of the stuff he has done at Riverside Airport in Tulsa and why they banned him there for a while too... another day.

Jeremy Abney was a holeshottin' son of a bitch out there back in about '92. I hard starting skills that at one time I would have put up against anyone, especially on concrete and he would beat my ass to the first turn everytime, from the outside gate, and just rail that right hand sweeper without ever letting off.

I was there the night that Waylon landed on (took out IMO) Bubba. I cant remember if I heard it myself or someone told me second hand that Waylon told him that he would do it again next time Bubba tried to beat him.

I was also there the night Homer hit the flaggers box after the tunnel double. Wood went flying. Amazingly he jumped back up and started trying to start the bike- despite the fact the radiator was torn off the left side of the bike. He threw it down and his mechanic went and got it.

Another thing about Homer. The mailman story is probably true. My old buddy Kevin Ford was over at Homers house in Stillwater and they were in the garage. The mailman started walking thru the grass and Homer yelled at him, something like "I thought I told you not to walk on my grass!? Next time you walk thru my yard I'm kicking your ass!" So maybe the guy didnt learn. Isnt beating a mailmans ass a federal offense?

If anyone has ever heard of the "spleen jump" at the 500 in Stillwater- that was named after Homer because he cased it and tumbled to the bottom. Almost died. He had to get flown out of there and had his spleen removed. It's the jump in Steel Roots the McGrath does the fat nac nac off into the valley. (I think they refer to it as "Cooperland" but its probably 8-10 miles from Cooperland.

HAHA YES I forgot about the Spleen Jump!!!!!

Man, Homer is a character. He was flying in the traffic pattern at Riverside one afternoon. For those of you who don't know, Riverside Oklahoma is in the Top 10 busiest General Aviation airports in the United States with about 1,500 take-offs and landings each day. Well, the control tower said something to Homer that he didn't like or maybe they denied one of his requests. Well he says Fuck You and shuts off his radio and does what he wants! BIG NO-NO!

But yeah the spleen jump was named after him!!! Man i loved the Stillwater 500!

Anybody remember when the new Husky automatic tranny bike came out and Jorski was there as a spectator but rode it for the dealer in street clothes and smoked them?

you cant help but laugh at that Jay.

im sure every track has stories and memories, but just the sheer amount of races held at 59th makes it legendary and I fondly look back at them.

Yes I remember Marco. He was fast on that KX 500.

I don't know what Marco is doing now, but like Danger said his Father owns American Transmission Shop in OKC. Greg (as danger mention rode ATVs for Honda) Own's a custom Harley Shop Called R & B Cycles. The last time I heard the oldest brother Max Jr. was doing a little music promoting and also owned a club on in south OKC.

Mr. Redwine is a class act and many time national champion in the 50 + expert class.

I ran into Mr Redwine last year at the Houston Supercross. We were on the same flight.

vickie... david is literally one of my best friends. The crew is me (greg mcquerry), mike ollison, david, little kenny, and rooster. We goto taylor park co every year on a big guys trip for a week (i missed this year). And my birthday is on the 9th, A1, steaks, 102 degree pool, and live sx, and all will be there... its on!

Whispern, the worlds fastest fireman! I dont even know where to begin with the whispern stories!

best part of 59th, was over the years, the sheer number of mx legends that have came thru there. The local, lived there or were close talent, Reynard, Marley, Cliff Palmer, Trey Ownes, Whispern, Terry Osbounre, Dennis Ownes, Jack Brassfeild, Waylen Litchfield, Homer Wolfslayer, Greg Brown, Eubanks, Chan Baker, Clifford Adonpte (can never remember how to spell his name, but his dad Topper was one of the nicest guys I ever met) Cooper, Brett Schumate... then you had the guys you would see from time to time,
Windham, Chicken, Lamson, Boyer, Pastrana, Stephson, Charlie Boggart, Walker, man, too many to list!

During the summer, there would be the night time national that was a big race, but the Dr Pepper race was HUGE. We look up one tuesday evening in 92 or 93, here comes cooper, and the rest of team suzuki. 1998, Reynard and Cooper battling it out in the 125 pro race, last corner, Cooper, NAILS robbie, then they get back to the pitys, Cooper comes stomping over and literally proceeds to cuss robbie out for letting him let cooper even get that close! HE was like, "Dont you EVER let someone do that to you! You left the door wide open!" and Robert is around the side of the box van crying hes laughing so hard... there is NO whining when Coop is around! So next race, robbie, goes balistic fast, for about 3 laps out of 10. Then we are all like wft is he doing, he about ate poop just then, wth? He broke a foot peg off the right side.... gee, never heard a 98 suzuki doing that (rolls eyes) SO here comes coop, robbie is havign none of it! 59th actually had damn good whoops in the day, robbie is hitting them so fast hes sitting down and still skimming. Cooper, he should go into the motivational busniess!

man, 59th and tuesday nights... THAT was the best thought! if i could go back it would be to then!
Just so you know, I love reading your 59th stories. Were you by any chance there there when Johnny Marley blew up his front wheel hitting the tunnel jump for the first time on his YZ 80?

I thought Johnny ended up in the stands the first time over the tunnel jump?
Either way, that jump was pretty gnarly.

Yeah that kid turned out pretty good too. Although his recent results might suggest the best is yet to come in the big class. But he is not as near a notorius character as some of those earlier mentioned.

DUDE COLBY SHARP!!!! I remember that curly haired dick. Never did seem very friendly, but he sure cure ride that RM!!! I remember the sound those...

Ha......wow I didn't think i was that much of a "dick" I can't believe I found this on here. Well just to let everyone know I am still an ass and everyone lets me know about it all the time.

You all keep on makin us old washed up riders feel good!!

Damn straight!!!!!! I remember when he got his 1980 KX 125s that were so slow that he would be paddling his feet to get it to go faster and the big bowl turn at 59th he would rail it wide open. He was unbeatable in the 70s and early 80s. Clay hoenshell was about the only one who could give him a race.

Just like every track 59th sure has its stories. I remember the time when there was the old raggied ass bleachers in front of the whoop section and one of the rows gave out. Newman Sr. immediately went to the front gate and posted a sign saying something to the effect that all riders and spectators enter and their own risk. HaHa

There was the rider of Eric (last name ?) who rode a CR 125 and his dad pulled a gun on another rider's father.

I never witnessed this but I was told that Guy Cooper used to light up between motos.

Another fast rider that hasn't been mentioned was Tommy Newman Jr. He could fly on the minis and even had a couple of top 3 finishes at Ponca in I think 83 or 84. For which if people don't know the early 80's is considered the hallmark of the minis. Great riders everywhere. Too bad Newman Jr. really didn't take MX serious.

Bruce O'Hagan killed the 80 Sr. class for a couple of years. Wondered why he never rode Ponca or LL's. H/e I do remember when Jeff Emig started coming down regularly that he wouldn't show up. I guess when they pulled up and saw Emig's Factory Kaw. box van they would just turn around and go home. I guess he couldn't stand losing.

Could go on forever about that place. Also, I would of liked to been around Saddleback in the 70's and 80's. Bet there r some whoppers coming out of there.

Yesterday (July 11th) we had a reunion of sort for all riders who raced Oklahoma Motocross in the past. Most of us raced in the 70's with some into the 80's and others still riding today. We all raced at 59th & Douglas which was the common thread amongst us all.

There were 13 in attendence on this day in Duncan, OK at the home of Randy Russell who graciously hosted the gathering. Also in attendance were Mark Russell, Trey Jorski, Chuck Cooper, Mike Patterson, Clarence Fortney, Doug Nelson, Lee Anderson, David Fultz, Dennis Morris, Curtis Ross and Mike Steil.

Stories are just stories until you hear it from the horses mouth and this fast group had some great memories and experiences to tell.

Clarence Fortney's mom had saved all the old liturature from back in the day for us to look through. From Southwest Cycle News to Oklahoma Cycle News we all scanned the articles that brought back memories and story's never told till now. LOL
We look forward to the next gathering and want to get more riders involved.

We have a Facebook group page for those who would like to join and share. Just seach for the group Oklahoma Motocross: The Glory Days. Hope to see you there!!!
